Canon retires PowerShot A470, replaces with A480
After a year of duty, the PowerShot A470 is finally withdrawing from the retail market. In its stead, Canon has announced the 10 megapixel A480. It's 25% smaller than its predecessor and features a 3.3x optical zoom (up to 4x digital), 2.5-inch LCD screen, and a DIGIC III processor. The company is also touting a simplified button scheme and a choice of four colors to match your fashion tastes: red, blue, black, and silver. No definitive word on a US release, but Europeans can look forward to these in February for around £129.00 (US$188).

wow that seems expensive for the A400 series. Most of the older model's MSRP was $130 CAD with street prices being near $90, (the A400 is usually the least expensive model)
When are they going to come up with a camera with a decen optical zoom! And don't tell me anything about how the price would be a lot higher, because I have a Lumix that has a nice 6X Optical Zoom and it wasn't expensive. I think it's a problem of wanting to sell the biger models, not a problem of costs.
Your average user doesn't care. They pull it out, snap a shot, put it away. Why spend money on something that won't be used? Canon makes out very well using ''old'' tech that works fine for every day use.
And those who do care won't be shopping this range anyway.
actually, 3.3x zoom is better than what most cameras in its price range have (3.0x).
And my lumix costed $230, and in MY country, so in the EEUU should be even less. Not much of a difference from the $188 this monster costs.
Your Lumix suffers from such poor image quality it's almost as though a child drew your photos with pencil crayon. I worked at a camera shop for 4 years selling Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji, and Panasonic cameras and Panasonic was the most disappointing of the bunch.
So sure, you have 6x optical zoom, but the rest of the camera is a hunk of junk :P
My Lumix TZ3 is awesome with its 10x optical zoom, and its slightly bigger than a compact camera. I used to have Canon SD300 and 400's and while their picture quality was slightly better, I wouldn't trade anything for the utility of such a long zoom. It's like having SLR zoom in your pocket without the length of an SLR lens. I have been able to take pictures of sports events, theme parks, airshows, and other events from far away - something that is impossible with other cameras in its class. The new Lumix TZ5 is out now, which offers even more features for a great price.
Throw out your A470 it's a piece of sh*t now
It was about time... Jeez, Canon!
Monumental upgrade...
Looks like a nice camera for a tween or grandparents at least.
Yawn?
We gave our 3 year-old son an A470 for Christmas. He always wanted to use my wife's Canon point and shoot, so we thought about getting him one of those Fisher Price cameras but they're terrible and shoot at 640x480 for about $60. So for $90 at B&H (plus $20 for the extended warranty that covers EVERYTHING) we got him an A470, and he loves it.
Long live the A470!
Another of those one eyed freaks!
I bought a canon a470 last week! :(
Be happy, A480 isn't mutch better, just slightly smaller and 30% more expensive.
And 10Mp doesnt give any advantage against 7.1Mp with this size objextive, might even make it worse as the noise increases.
I wish the megapixel war would end, and the lens war begin. 10Mp camera with lousy objective is just daft.
A bit expensive for A4x0 series...but then it is 10.0mpxl
$188 and no image stabilization (IS)??? An A590IS has more features and costs less!
