NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 / 295 review roundup
NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 295 is only a week old at retail, but that hasn't stopped the company from turning around and releasing yet another card -- the GTX 285 -- today. The reviews for both are in and from what we've read, the GTX 295 seems to match or outshine its AMD Radeon HD 4870 X2 counterpart in most performance tests. As for the GTX 285, the general consensus is that it's the fastest single-GPU graphics card on the market right now. It's only slightly better-performing than the GTX 280, however, so if you've already got that, it's probably not worth the upgrade. We're not gonna pretend to understand every benchmark result, but we'll gladly point you in the right direction.

*disenchanted and melodramatic sigh*
Take this away from me, Ross Miller! And close the blinds! Tell Joshtops and Mums that I will not be seeing gentlemen callers until a single-GPU solution exists which plays Crysis Warhead at 60 frames per second at 2560x1600 with all the settings and AA/AF turned up.
:woe is me:
the AMD 4870x2?
meant to be ATI amirite
@tim
see that x2 there... ill give you two guesses as to what that means...
AWESOME !
I'll take 4
I'll take a GTX280, prices of those have dropped like a rock as of lately. You can pick one up for just slightly more then a GTX260+ and some where sub $300 after rebates and such.
is it just me...or is that robot very similar to the one used by newegg to advertise for AMD? O_o

He's going to kill you now for exposing the fact that he has to work two jobs to make ends meet.
LOL - a giant robot with a fkin UZI...
I guess the horrible economy has taken a toll on everyone/thing...sigh
Actually, they're relatives. It's been pretty awkward at their parents' giant robotic household this Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Im waiting my i7 comp with an HD 4850... but still im blushing of shame and envy! ^_^
This card just totally whips the 4870x2 :O
I didn't expect it to be that much better... and cheaper... and to use less power while doing so.
Well it sure is a good thing you didn't expect it to be cheaper, cause it is not. The 4870x2's retail price is $100.00 less than the GTX295. Or about 20% less. In those benchmarks it doesn't win, it usually doesn't lose by any more than 20%. So price per performance, the 4870x2 is still equal to the GTX 295.
However, if you've got more money to spend than a 4870x2 costs but not enough for two 4870x2s then definitely buy a GTX 295.
I was thinking the same thing... it's more expensive, and only marginally faster then the 4870 X2, so why bother? It's like comparing the GTX 280 to the 4870.
it was much easier when the higher the number the better the card was.
the 295 has 2 digital outputs and one display port, does this mean it can be hooked to 3 monitors???
probably not but just on the off chance :)
I think so

Not sure where the $100 cheaper math came about, but even with mail-in rebates, we're only looking at $70 more:

In addition, price vs. performance isn't what this is about, so your comparison isn't valid.
Less power usage, less heat, less sound (the 4870 x2 falls WAY behind in this category especially), better drivers, better support....shall I continue?
Yes, because you are foolish. Support comes from the manufacturers 90% of the time. Companies like XFX, BFG, etc. Nvidia in particular does not direct manufacture any of the cards. As such, fan crappiness is depended on brand, not the chip manufacturer. ATI over the last 2 years has had improved drivers, quicker bug release, improved customer service, greatly improve product performance. Shall I continue???!
What the hell happened to ATi? Seems like ever since AMD acquired them they've taken a back seat in the graphics card industry.
Huh, AMD was the best thing ever to happen to ati. They actually outperformed nVidia and forced them to lower prices!
Uhh the 4850/70 (X2) are pretty awesome cards, no? They are doing better against nVidia than AMD is doing against Intel.
But AMD isn't doing any good at all against iNtel
A pretty good performance but MAN IS IT LOUD!!!
I don't understand why these companies make these great video cards for $500 and then put in $10 fan. I might as well try playing my video games while a friend stands next to me repeating over and over and over again swing batter batter swing batter batter swing...
There are companies like scythe, thermaltake and others that specialize in reducing the sould level cooling systems.
I'd much rather pay $540 for a card that is very quiet with great video performance than $500 for a card with the same performance that sounds like a leaf blower.
I was wondering how load these cards are. I've got a Geforce 9800 GTX and it gets annoying to hear that fan going full bore.
Is there some reason they don't use AA while benching Crysis, but use 4X while benching everything else? That seems pretty important.
Because Crysis (bad core coding) + AAx4 = all cards look like crap.
Sales will pop, if they put up Macross Robot on there.
I will get 1 at least.
The card looks really cool... Maybe its price tag indicates that it is meant to be in your dining room's walls or in a art exposition. If that's the case, it is dirt cheap.
As was clearly stated in every single review, the reference design wasn't deviated from, so it doesn't matter that NVIDIA doesn't supply cards directly to the retail sector.
As far as your comments about ATI, you've been living under the proverbial rock if you think any of other comments have validity:
- Improved Drivers - Sure, their drivers are better than they used to be, but they're still far cry from NVIDIA stability and cleanliness, not to mention a lower footprint.
- Quicker Bug Release - Please, go back and check driver revision releases from both companies again and see who remains more consistent on their releases
- Improved Customer Service - This comment doesn't even make sense, so I'm not even sure why it was in your reply.
- Greatly Improved Product Performance - This is probably the only thing I can agree with you on, and frankly, they needed to get their head out of their asses in order to even compete. Like the Intel/AMD battle, the only way that we can benefit is that there's cyclic change on the performance leader, otherwise we're gouged drastically. Ultimately, this point is moot.
If you're going to continue, provide some validity to your comments, rather than opinion, so that you're not the Laughed@Man, because frankly, you're mostly off base.
