WiBrain M1 reemerges as EKING M1, still rockin' the uglies
You've got us -- the M1 is far from the most unsightly product to ever sport the WiBrain logo, but even this pig (seriously, this thing is chubby) looks no better post-lipstick. After appearing and vanishing in one fell swoop, the EKING M1 has surfaced in China with a 1.33GHz Atom Z520 processor, built-in WiFi, optional WWAN, a battery good for six hours of usage, GPS, a TV tuner, camera and a full QWERTY keyboard. We can't give our wholehearted recommendation on purchasing one from Made-In-China.com, but feel free to check out lots more in the wild shots below.

You'd be chubby too if someone stuffed that much stuff into that form factor.
My thoughts exactly.
Hmm... neat
it must be some license-less OEM stuff got rebadged around...
Actually, according to their website, Eking is the brand the company uses in domestic market in China while Wibrain is for US, Europe and other part of the world.
I'd get it if it were cheaper than the alternatives, ugly devices need owners too ya know.
So, what is the cost of this beauty?
Hope it's not everything south of my belt.
If I were traveling overseas, and wanted something to get email, watch movies AND do some basic dreamweaver and photoshop work. Could I use this? Can you even install those programs on it?
Pssh! A real pro would use just a text editor for all that stuff!
Bill do you even make websites? Dreamweaver is SUCH a relief. You can't use text editors for everything, most of the basic work is done in dreamweaver as it saves SOO much time.
Yeah, I use Dreamweaver. But I use text editors to listen to music and watch movies!
this would be sick if it was also a phone. A phone that zack morris would be envious of
According to the poorly translated spec page:
It does have support for GSM & GPRS connectivity (basically first gen AT&T network) but no mention of HSPDA ( AT&T 3G);
"Optional GSM/CDMA1X wireless Internet module" (in the US, thats Verizon's EV-DO network..3G) which I find strange, because I thought China was mostly HSPDA/UMTS for 3G..but I'm not sure, I get mixed up.
Also according to the specs, the display was made by one of Korea's top manufacturers:
SUMSUNG! guess Samsung was busy.
Actually Bill,
A real pro does write in code, but understands that a tool like dreamweaver can save time with color coding and preview and ftp all in one etc. Real pro's don't waste time using a text editor, just because you can. But thank you for playing.
Wait til they release its replacement....the F'king M2!!!
Ok you get a win for that one.
Honestly, besides being the Buddha of the Sidekick world, it doesn't look that bad.
Hope Sony saw this. All these features in this form factor...this is what a new PSP could look like. I don't think its really that ugly, but it could use some more refinement. I would like to get one... and start moddin away.
Hate replying to my own post... but
Guess part of my post was kinda stupid... Apparently, Sony makes a slider UMPC, which is pretty neat. So they are capable of making a better PSP with all the features we want. They just wont.
Also, just to clarify... I was hoping that since its a made-in-China almost KIRF, that it may be reasonably cheap enough to buy just to tinker with for fun. Like all the iFone stuff on ebay, or the mp4 player that looks like a nano...
Some reputable brand UMPC sliders can be found for around $500. And some for $5000.
Look like a HUGE T-Mobile G1!!!!
Now with two chins
In my opinion it really looks like my sidekick lx took steriods, and and then got hit with an ugly stick, alot.
baha.
The ugly is not important! The many functions as: GPS, TV, etc...THAT's important! For traveling. Not to have to bring 4 machines: GPS, TV, computer, etc... Also, important...The battery charge is 6 hours! Look, the monkey are uglies, but they serve a lot. The prepare cooking, they clean houses, they go to the store (you give money) to buy a quart of milk. They serve but theyre ugly. My Honda truck is ugly but starts at minus 40 degrees! So, don't make Mr.EKING sad, he's a good boy, he works a lot to put all thoses functions in a small tiny box! Maybe he ship one M1 to me free, for defending his marvel! I wish! From Pierre.
Where to buy? I cannot find where? It's the ONLY umpc with GPS+TV TUNER+CAMERA at this size. Why discuting of ugly or butyfull? Is features and small for traveling are more serious discutions! Also, look Asus R50A is nice, but pricefull and not working well. I tried at the CES 2009. If you can find where to buy the EKING M1 write it to me at: musicalcd@hotmail.com
