Sony goes Cloud-hopping with Final Fantasy VII edition PS3
Like some greedy vampire that just won't rest, Final Fantasy VII keeps coming back again and again to suck the contents out of your wallets. Its latest incarnation is a re-release of Advent Children, and Sony's getting in on the game with yet another special edition console to celebrate it. The upgraded movie is said to boast 30 more minutes of gratuitous high-res animation action while the new PS3 features a 160GB HDD and a matte "Cloud Black" paint job with Cloud's Strike Strife Wolf emblem engraved (or at least appliqued) on top. The bundle with the movie (including a demo of Final Fantasy XIII) will sell for about $550 in Japan when it releases next month -- naturally there was no mention of a US release.

This + http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/13/sony-said-to-be-sitting-on-1-1-billion-annual-loss-first-in-14/ = lol
I won't lie; I can't see the connection.
math lesson:
(reviving outdated game that everyone has already played) + (releasing another lame variation of your hardware) + (still refusing to price drop) = (getting owned by Nintendo) = (losing your ass)
at least I think that's what he's driving at.
Surely then Microsoft has the pocket to persuade Square Enix to conjure a remake?
A matte ps3. That should be enough reason to go for it. I'd love one over the piano black one.
ugh get it over with and announce a FFVII remake already!
100% agree on that one
that was going to be my exact post when i read this! You would think the guaranteed 5+ million copies sold would make this a no-brainer for them? stop torturing us Square!!
agreed - if this were the announcment of them re-making the game with modern graphics and a few extra non plot essential missions... i'd be buying a PS3... instead... im not.
We really need an FF7 remake. There has been no overall better game since.
Secret of Evermore was way more fun than FF7.
*ducks*
@ eggo
Yea, that's right!! You better duck...
In all seriousness, I don't know why this game has stayed with me for so long (whether nostalgic value, or simply gameplay value) but I've gotta agree with KarlW. I haven't had nearly the experience I had with that game in anything since. In fact, I just recently had my discs resurfaced so that I could play through it all again. As much as I'd care to see a remake, I feel like they'd somehow change things too much in doing so, and that would likely be for the worse. I'd still really like to see it done, though (damn tech demo tease...)
so the game that basically fell into Sony's lap because Nintendo refused to use the CD format.
After all these years, the only game that ever mattered.
Sure GTA Vice City was insanely good, but once the adrenaline rush of baseball batting civilians wore off, there was no game.
Anything else cool ever happen on a Sony platform? Okami was cool, but eventually became Multiplatform, like GTA..
There have certainly been a lot of games, some of which were arguably better than FF7, and yet it's the one FF game I remember best, and the game I had the most memorable time playing. Sure, I remember FF8 and 9, but I don't have the same soft spot for the other FF games.
I certainly loved the FF7 story, and the characters. That probably made the difference for me.
FFVI was way better than VII
i'd be all for a ff7 remake if i knew they wouldn't change everything about the game i liked,. including the old school sound effects, read-only dialogues, etc/ its snowballed into a franchise based on indirectly addressing "hardcore fans" whom i see as fiercely biased towards a game without giving fair consideration to those games that have surpassed it.
@MIKE: Well, if you exclude MGS, Gran Turismo, LittleBigPlanet, GTA and Ridge Racer, no.
FF7 had some really memorable moments like no other game (I think I can mention Aeris without spoilers, right?). Zelda:OoT is close, but it just didn't have those climatic moments that FF7 did.
FF7's characters were on just the right side of the uncanny valley - despite speaking in text and being made of badly textured cubes and cylinders. I really liked them as I was playing the game.
A PS3 remake would just be awesome. They could re-use much of the artwork from Advent Children.
@SewerShark
You're somewhat right. FF6 was, at least, just as good as 7. As far as storyline and characters go, I don't know if they've ever topped these two games.
@linusk01
What you're asking for sounds like the old FFVII on a PS3 disk. There are some things will need to be changed. The graphics and sounds will probably be the two main things. The only things that I think shouldn't be changed is the story and the gameplay. There can be additions to the story, but nothing taken out.
I could see dropping the coin if they released this with a remake or a stable PS3 version, and I and not talking about a PS1 version ran on an emulator.
i know what you mean. Maybe it is just my discs, but whenever I summon Knights of the Round, the frame rate drops through the floor for the majority of the sequence, making an already long sequence that much longer.
Sony doesn't learn :(
People care less about what is drawn on the PS3 case, they care more whats left in the wallet after they buy it.
Agreed. Maybe someone should remind Sony/Square that Konami tried this with their limited edition MGS4 console, and it failed. I can't see how this is going to be any different.
The MGS PS3 bundle fail? Really?
that's it. Just a freaking etch on the case and for $550.00?
I'll pass.
Why was this game so popular. I played it, and it was a fun game. I just don't see how it has this kind of staying power. Is it because the one chick died? This has the staying power of Zelda and I'm not really sure why.
I feel the same way about Zelda.
FF7 has the staying power because it did almost everything right and in a big way.
Just for the record, I can replay a Zelda game every 12 months or so. Not that I do, but I could. You couldn't pay me to replay a RPG unless it's been (a) graciously updated with better gameplay, CG/movies and graphics, and (b) 5+ years.
That's funny, because there is no backwards emulation on the latest PS3's, you can't even play FF7 on the damn thing. Not unless I am out of the loop.
All PS3s will play PS1 games, it's PS2 emulation that was dropped in later models. Foolishly, IMHO.
naturally it also lacks the ability to play your copy of FFVII
How so?
Last time I checked, FFVII was a PS1 game......you do know that the Playstation 3 can play PS1 games right?
Phil...
Is Final Fantasy Advent Children, wtf is wrong with you...!
And Sony! another remake come on!
um Phil, you do know that the PS3 has dropped all reverse compatability since early last yr.
The ps3 can still play psone games, they only removed the emotion engine stuff from the ps2.
Jon, Phil and Xdark are correct: PS3 will still play PS1 games, disc or otherwise. It is solely the PS2 games that can no longer be played as the PS2 Emotion Engine hardware was removed from the NTSC territories and the Emulation software was removed from the PAL territories.
Every PS3 that is out, whether it be a launch consoles or a currently available 80/160GB model, will play PS1 games.

I don't know why people are complaining or flaming Sony for this.
This limited edition are for die-hard FF fans, or yet someone who wants a unique PS3.
-a matte-black 160GB PS3 with a cool looking logo.
-FF7 Advent Children Complete Blu-Ray
-FFXIII Demo
I think that's a nice value for FF fans.
And no, it's not intended to play your favorite FF7(PS1) Game here.
Just ignore em, most people commenting here probably don't even own a ps3. I would love to have one if I didn't already own a ps3. But it would be better if you got something more than just a cool logo, art book? aciton figure? matching controllers?
Just a bit tenuous Sony.
Almost pissed my pants when I just saw the title of the post. Sony please just remake it....with just update graphics pleaseeeeeee...wait...I did piss my pants....
You should be talking to Square-Enix and not to Sony.
:)
It's Cloud Strife not Cloud Strike, good work Engadget
If only FFVII wasn't the most overhyped RPG ever made, then maybe this would be at least interesting, but Sony has to keep milking the 12 year old, mediocre game for all it's worth.
It's not like SCEA has anything else going for it now.
Wow. That actually looks poo. It's just a playstation 3 with a badly placed sticker.
no wonder Sony losing money. They are not even focus. Makes you wonder if Sony has lost touch with its user base no??.
Sony offering more alternatives to the glossy piano black is always a good thing. If you have a different plan for your living-room color theme the glossy black might be a problem.
I thought that was the symbol on Squalls sword. I think the name was Griever or something.
With Sony releasing a few more different colors I might just be able to remodel my living room soon. Glossy piano black is as we all know a dying trend...
Seriously? I counted at least 3 comments reminding people that it is square not sony and you're still criticizing sony. Biased much?
