Sony ushers in change, hope with upcoming PS3 2.60 firmware update
Sony just dropped some details on its upcoming 2.60 firmware update for the PS3. The big thrust of the update is a new Photo Gallery app, which can sort by various EXIF data, but also the actual content of the image itself, including colors used, number of people in the photo, how old they are, and facial expressions they used when you pulled out your powdered-blue Kodak to take a few historical snapshots. Naturally you can build slideshows with music and the like. Sony's also adding with this update guest access to the PlayStation Store and DivX 3.11 support. If that's not enough magic to get you riled up, Sony's also pushing out a PSP update, firmware 5.03 that addresses "security vulnerabilities" (we wonder what that could be?) and some stability issues. There's a video walkthrough of the PS3 update after the break.

Great! Now just gotta fix my Blu-Ray drive!
80028801 fixed?
@Centinall Yea man that was fixed a while ago, I know- I was on the forums about it the day it happened. I only had the problem for half a day.
When will it be available for the public ?
Sony press release says tomorrow, January 21.
Question is... When will it support DIVX 7.0? So we can all play our MKV's since thats what the new Divx7.0 does :/
If Sony plans on fully supporting DIVX, hope they catch up to 7.0 fast :(
YES
Ps3 is the Shit
Yeah, I'm also really exited :D:D:D
Here is the PS3 2.60 firmware link for the following:-

let me see the photos of sony execs frowning when they see that 2.60 didn't save their sinking ship.
It not over. Not by a long shot.
These things go in cycles. I remember the days when the Atari was untouchable. Then they messed up by putting out a bunch of more expensive systems that didn't get adopted because they cost more and support kept going for the 2600. Then the C64 took over gaming for a while until Commodore shot themselves in the foot. Then for the longest time, you couldn't imagine anyone but Nintendo being the leader in console gaming. Sega almost had them but messed up by putting out a bunch of more expensive consoles too quickly (I guess they didn't learn from Atari). Then Nintendo messed up by holding on to cartridges for too long, not to mention that the N64 was more expensive. Sony ruled the roost for two generations like Nintendo before them but messed up by putting out a higher priced console. They thought that having such a high percentage of the market the previous two generations would give them enough fan loyalty to finally put out a really good quality system and remain on top. Why nobody can figure out the simple formula of (Early_Release + Cheap_Console = Win), I'll never know. I've seen it enough times that I knew the PS3 wouldn't win this generation. Once the media latched on to the original $600 price tag of the good PS3 model, it was over. They have to just keep chugging along now until someone else makes a mistake and opens the door back up for them. It all goes in cycles.
Dang, I feel old now. :(
Slowly, but surely we're getting more functionality. Keep going Sony and don't forget my PSP.
Sony is not going to forget any PSP, even after PSP2's out. Think about PSone and PS2slim you'll see that Sony is just too Sony to let go of past easily.
Why would they forget about the PS2, it's still selling and is basically pure profit at this point.
That's why the PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player - periodic automatic updates
Although the updates are very nice, in the end non of them will make the PS3 reproduce sound or video as good as dedicated BD player in the price region of €220 and above.
desperate
No, desperate would be buy 1 get 1 free. Despite me not really being a fan of Sony marketing the Ps3 as an entertainment system (since I use mine for games only), although it's exactly that, this is just adding more functionality to features a lot of people use. Sounds more like they're giving the user what they want rather than hoping to push 500,000 new Ps3s because you can make musical slide shows.
Now, if only someone would light a fire under Treyarch's ass to patch CoD, that shit sucks!
If a firmware update is your idea of "desperate" what will you think when they finally lower the price of the thing? Good god, your head might actually explode!
Just be sure to film yourself reading the story about the price drop so we can all watch. Have a friend put it on Youtube too... cause you'll probably be dead.
By your logic MS must be failing hard with their NXE update and Jasper consoles and all...
wow, another USELESS update. hey sony why dont you try adding some features people actually WANT?
Like? All thats left is MKV support, and for that you can use Tversity or a program called MKV2VOB which is extremely fast(I can convert an HD Gundam 00 episode in less than 20 seconds....). But native support will be nice, and we all know it'll come eventually
This may be shocking to you but there are people who actually want this update. Just because it is not something you specifically want, it is something someone else want. Just because an update doesn't fix your issue, it fixes someone else's issue.
Also included in this update is XMB themes for Blu-Ray movies, ability to delete game data during gameplay if HDD is full, and credit card security from what I have been reading around the web.
Stop trolling and speak for yourself. Divx 3.11 support is fantastic, and the PS3 is already an amazing media device that plays Blu-ray, upscaled-DVD, digital-distribution, and Divx/xvid files in a excellent and quiet package.
All my old Divx content is now playable with this update, the PS3 plays most newly encoded files alright already, but older stuff it didn't do to well until now. MKV support is supported in the latest Divx standards, and PS3 is Divx certified device; so hopefully they can get MKV support in the near future.
Would love support of subs, flv, and ogg as well.
@game_playa
And OGG. Although I am not that sure any of them will come. I have asked for it, like anyone should, but both are niche codecs.
I'd also like to have a Last.FM scrobbling app and a decent tagging program, launched before ripping and with CDDB support.
And software compatibility with PS2 (even if only Ico and Shadow of the Colossus work).
I agree.
There's a few things that are stoppping me switching off my 360 altogether as a media hub, the main things being the ability to play music from my NASBoxes in the same easy way (like, a proper media player can - random playlists, etc)
MKV support would be good.
NEVER used my PS3 for pictures, so not fussed about that
I agree, too. Every so often Sony has a meaningful update -- like DivX support -- but most seem to be minor tweaks that are rarely worth a look. And frankly they're so cryptic that the general user will never know or understand what's been added. The language Sony chooses to use to describe the update is so technical, the user just adds the update and keeps going. I find it hard to believe a significant number of people are using the PS3 to playback photos. I know people who have card readers in their TVs -- yet they never use them because it was never a feature that was "natural" to that device. Most of us commenting on this forum get it -- but most people with a PS3 probably don't. If the other features are happening, that's cool. But I'll never know because I'll just install it when Sony tells me to, then keep going.
Yeah why don't MS add WIFI, Blu-ray and free online gaming. Things that people want and PS3 owners don't have to pay for. At least Sony is continually trying to better the PS3. How many updates has Xbox had in the last yr? 1? Who the hell wants to dress up a cartoon character?
It's nice that they are doing development and pushing firmware updates out.... but I hope one day they'll include something that helps exploit the capabilities it has (i.e. WiFi)... Hey Sony, how about Netflix streaming??
I like these things, but how about .m4a support for us iTunes users?
game 1080i support please instead of down sampling to 720p... geesh...
I thought 720p was superior to the 1080i since 1080i is interlace and only has 540 horizontal lines which is a lot less than 720 lines...
ummmmmmmyou DO know 720p is better than 1080i right???
thats why its like that....as most games are NATIVELY 720p anyways....for the EXACT same reason
MKV :(
That was a not so subtle reference to inauguration day. Let's hope Obama's Administration goes better than Sony has over the last few years.
As a person, give him a chance. As a politician, give him no chance. That's more than the lefties can say they did for Bush.
Great exactly what I would want, a network enabled system taking a good hard look at my photos so it can "sort" them down to the detail of the age and number of people in the image. How about you stick to trying to get decent games on your system instead of trying to make musical slide shows.
So your computer is not networked? are you living on the XX century or do you still use Polaroid exclusively?
Right, because I'm sure they took Team Ico off their project to create this update.
@Robert
Last I checked my computer didn't give a rats ass what was "in" my pictures nor try to sort them by anything other then the industry standard tags.
Last I checked, the PS3's game library had a good amount of "decent games" to play on it. Then again, I have a feeling you don't own a PS3 to play games on it, do you (that is, if you even own one to begin with).
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! We want MKV support. And don't give me the b.s. about it being a format for "pirates". Yes, it is used a lot in bit torrent but have you EVER tried to rip a bd disc? You rip it to MKV.
I'm pretty sure Sony would consider ripping a Blu-ray disc for personal use to be piracy. Until it is a format supported in some kind of 100% legitimate commercial service, you're not going to see Sony supporting it.
Sony knows, and we all know, that I am legally allowed to make a copy for back up and personal use of any movie or cd I purchase.
That is an entirely different topic though. The fact remains that MKV is hands down the most supported container in the high def world, and the PS3 (being the high def machine it was meant to be) should stoutly support it.
I do not know how you ripped your blu-rays but I keep that puppy in its native formate with a .m2ts container. If it is a VC1 i do the conversion to h264 with a .m2ts container and stream it to the ps3 and it sees it just fun. Full1080p with multichannel audio.
The latest DivX HD supports MKV playback, since the PS3 is an official DivX playback device it should soon support the newest format of DivX HD and therefore will natively support MKV as well. Yay!
Hey Sony, update GT5 prologue so I have voice chat and private rooms!!!
If you want private rooms, go to a bath house.
