G1 turned into a boot drive: is nothing sacred?

There is nothing that we love more than booting things -- as you know, modern gadgetry is almost entirely dependent on "The Boot," in one way or another. TomTom? Gotta boot it up. PS3? Ditto. And those netbooks you're infatuated with? Fuhgeddaboutit. That's why whenever a novel way of booting something manifests itself, we're on it like white on rice. And you know what? If you can boot the Ultimate Boot CD off of a thumb drive, you can boot it off the G1 handset -- so long as it's connected to your PC via USB, and it's in mass storage mode. Pretty sweet. Hit the read link for the step-by-step. And, hey -- don't forget to have fun.

dang, pretty clever. that's like carrying diagnostics, BartPE, linux, whatever around in the palm of my hand without having to lug around an external, flash drive, ie another device. slick.
you have to carry around a cable. thats bulkier than a thumbdrive
@jimmy
depends how big the cable is
That's what she said.
@jimmy, i would carry a USB cable for my phone, just like I do for my mp3 player...mini usb comes in so handy. small enough to fit in my briefcase or backpack, besides
From the external link, I ound this part interesting:
"...Oh yeah, and for all you guys who think the USB headset was stupid on the G1, consider USB headsets a blessing. Your headset can now talk back to the phone. Did you know you can press the button on the headset to switch songs or start playing music without even unlocking or touching your phone? You can also do all this over Bluetooth 2.0 once Cupcake releases this month too. I picked up a Voyager 855 just for that."
Also,
Debian on the Micro SD card:

you can do that with an iphone headset... which is a normal headphone jack.
the iphone headset also happens to work with a blackberry curve, i have done it. blackberry curve - also not usb.
Wow so amazing as if other phones couldn't do that without using a USB headset. Please stop showing us ignorant you are by thinking that it is because of the USB headset that you can do those things. They let a few new smartphones on the US market and suddenly everyone thinks these little things are a big deal that only their phone can do.
Control by Bluetooth *when* cupcake gets here? What a joke you guys don't already have that? People have been using bluetooth to control their devices for years now. Stop showing your ignorance.
@sr
Stop trolling and learn to express your ideas in a way that doesn't make people want to smash your face in.
Very cool.As a G1 owner and a computer technician I am tempted to pick up a nice SD card and try this.
Got an 8GB for $19 at Fry's the other day. With adapters and so on.
newegg had a 8gb class 6 for $14 shipped a week or 2 ago. I was mad at myself for not waiting (I spent $28 on a class 4 a few months back, then lost my job so my need to store movies went away).
Y'know, you could've put that shoe in a car for the full-on pun.
Very clever.
Dawg we put a G1 in yo car so yo can use it as a USB drive while yo drive.
After installing Windows 7 on my main PC via an iso (didn't burn it) and then borking the install a bit later I thought I was up the creek. Didn't have any DVD's and who wants to go outside to get those?
So I reformatted my G1's card to NTFS and copied the iso contents onto it, booted and (unfortunately) had to reformat/reinstall. The G1 saved me from my laziness.
You tried to install Windows with an ISO?
...
*slap*
You know that mounting the ISO in Daemon tools and running the setup from the works PERFECTLY right? because you just made yourself look like a huge douchbag trying to make him look wrong.
Actually, I was making a snarky comment for the sake of comedy. You, however, seem to enjoy pointing out others' ignorance. I am quite aware that installation can be done via ISO. I am also aware, however, that it can be rather unreliable. I've got about a 50/50 success rate with it. I don't recommend it unless you really don't have any DVD-Rs laying around.
Am I missing something here. I always thought it was possible when a phone let's you mount the flash drive via USB (I never tried it though).
I am also confused about the USB headset point, my understanding is that audio in/out is not going via USB. Audio signals go on separate wire along with USB wires. Forwarding of the song via headphone has nothing to do with USB, this is done similar to the way iPhone does it or any other phones do e.g. press button to connect/ disconnect call.
Can't any phone with a mass storage mode do this?
Most likely, yeah.
slow news day?
Anything with a mass storage mode in the first place can do this.
Newsflash: this feat is possible with any phone that has a USB Mass Storage mode, assuming it has something like a MicroSD slot or a wealth of internal storage.
is that a ski boot?
no. its a BOOTloader. har. har.
sorry. :(
I wish I had a G1 instead of my LG Voyager... I'm such an idiot.
Guess what? I wished I didn't buy my last phone last week.
It got stolen the same day :(
Be careful with your wishes, some might actually come true...
newsflash: HTC Touch Pro (well, practically any HTC device) turned into a boot drive!
Yawn. Mass storage... boot from USB.
Yawn. Dejavu.
That is a really awesome looking boot.
Yeah seriously yawn. Big deal, many phones can go into mass storage mode and let you do this.
But can you boot from a Google account? Would be awesome.
Yes, actually you can. Through a very long and complicated process I assure you it is do-able. Very slow but still do-able.
Im talking about a PC btw, and even if i did and made a video explaining it I would have any way to prove it but just take my word for it. All you'd need is another PC running linux with a PXE server.
I'm sorry...what does that even mean? Boot from a google account?
Sic transit gloria. Glory fades. I'm Max Fischer.
Or buy a really cheap flash drive with much faster read/write times then you don't have to copy all your crap off your phone first.
Definite slow news day, Engadget proves on a consistant basis there are very few technically minded real geeks working at Engadget, all the funny install guides for windows 7(WOW IT REALLY WORKED ON MY MACBOOK WOW) prove it.
