Sony to shutter Japanese TV plant as part of restructuring efforts
Hey Sony -- we know that experiencing your first annual operating loss in 14 years calls for drastic measures, but this is bordering on downright rash. Barely a month after announcing that 16,000 employees would be axed, Sony has now revealed plans to close one of its two television plants in Japan and rid itself of 2,000 domestic full-time jobs as it attempts to "revive its electronics business." Of note, it's stated that those 2,000 -- which seem to be a part of the previously mentioned 16,000 figure -- will be shed via "early retirement and other programs." Just think what a 40-inch XEL-1 would do for business. No, seriously Sony, just think.

Ouch.
(All I can say for this article.)
(All I can say for the entire world economy right now...)
(All I can say when I look at that burning thingy in the sky)
(All your mom can say when I stick it in her)
*Golf clap*
This is why I try to find out where a TV was made before I make a purchase. The line starts in Japan, gets excellent reviews, and then gets transferred to Taiwan (not to pick on Taiwan) where the quality goes into the toilet, and all of the reviews become meaningless.
Meh
DAMN I'm glad I'm a city worker in the NYC Public School system !
You must like to comment on the unemployment posts.
Damn, I'm glad I don't work at all!
@AK66

I typically like to leave people to their own devices, opinions, and quirks, but you've really hit a nerve with me. After reading your comments on the article concerning the layoffs in the Philippines from Intel and the 30 some odd let go from Sega, I've decided that you are an extremely arrogant and pompous douchebag. Maybe you should get your ass off the internet and earn your f*cking paycheck, doing whatever it is that an assistant principal does. I really can't understand that the children of tomorrow are benefiting by you being here. I hope that if I reach a point in my life that I have children here in New York, they never end up in your school.
Oh and by the way, greetings from the tech industry, a place that you consistently shit on and have no business providing commentary. I work in research and development for one of the most innovative companies in the world (whether or not you like our products is another matter entirely,) and I find it really disquieting that I have to constantly fear my lab closing while you are still employed.
If you like a gadget featured here, great, and hopefully you can provide some meaningful insight to the design and function, but please, please, for the rest of our sake, stop everything else.

You're dissapointment in my comments is irrelevant. If you don't appreciate them, then don't say anything at all - just keep on truckin.
@ Flashpoint
I just really wish I could get a comment filter to block everything you say and all the subsequent responses, that way I don't have to rage on the internet anymore. Oh, and being in the education system, maybe you should proof-read your post before you add comment so you don't slip a "you're" in where a "your" should be.
Maybe you and I should just hug it out?
!
MGS4 comment?

Gee, I guess Sony shouldn't have paid the movie studios hundreds of millions of dollars for them to issue their movies exclusively on bluray. What goes around comes around Sony. By the way, why don't you close those plants that make Memory sticks?
"Just think what a 40-inch XEL-1 would do for business. No, seriously Sony, just think."
considering how a 40" would cost, and considering the current economy, that would really help in shutting the company down !!
Are you guys at engadget disconnected from the real world !!
with Sony out, Apple has less competition... which is good if you look at it from Engadget's perspective.
@holycow
yeah considering the majority of the engadget editors apparently use macbook pros too.
Damn... I can't believe that Sony used to prosper so much not many years ago and now it's facing such a hard time.
It is really weird for me to see all these talks about companies cutting jobs. We are facing the opposite problem, we do not have enough room for all of our new employees. Last week alone I created 10 new user accounts and last time I looked, we had about 50 full-time open positions and counting. I am very thankful that my wife and I are in the company we are because neither of our jobs are going any where in the foreseeable future.
So you work for Nintendo's Wii manufacturing facility?
Seriously, you and your wife may want to consider diversifying where each one works unless you're near retirement. For example, if your CEO decides to play with the numbers and gets caught, both breadwinners can lose their job in an Enron-type meltdown. Also remember that mortgage and wall street companies were hiring like gangbusters less than 5 years ago, no industry is really safe forever.
Makes perfect sense to me. There have already been reports that they'll be using more high-end panels from Samsung, meaning they're probably going to do less TV manufacturing aside from the real high end (i.e. the OLED displays and such) in Japan, where pay is still relatively high.
Of course, this is far from the 8000 full-time emps they promised to cut, and while it's going the right direction is probably not going to be enough to get them out of a rut.
sucks
Not just sony, every major companies are having problems and they are cutting jobs.
you talk like its the end of sony. engadget seriously you guys need some serious professional help.
btw, engadget make an article about how many Americans companies are shutting down and cutting alot of jobs.
Yeah, I keep mentioning a list of all the major tech companies that are making cuts, but never get a break. This Cnet article really sums it all up pretty well and they update it all the time:
http://news.cnet.com/tech-layoffs/?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-5
I've even started printing it out every week and posting it on the board in the break area of my lab to let the other techs know that it's not just our company that's making major cuts.
Aw, hell. That should say "Yeah, I keep mentioning in Engadget posts about layoffs to create a list..."
Proofreading is for lovers.
@absinthe party,
yep thats a good list there. why all the Sony hate article ? why americans media hate sony?
It's mostly tech media that hates Sony. While they're an innovative and forward-thinking company, most of the things they produce are over-priced compared to the quality of the device. It all boils down to marketing and exposure, being first to market, and building off of a brand name that was prominent and extremely succesful in the past.
@absinthe party,
those anti sony article are getting ridiculous.
I haven't really noticed any Engadget hate on Sony, but I definitely have from the comment section. The PS3 gets a lot of play around here and the VAIO line, while overpriced, get's some positive exposure.
Samsung has been moving up in the market and taking the share of TV sales away from Sony. Personally, I prefer Samsung over the Sony TVs and own both.
I think what Sony televisions, and products in general are missing is a big MADE IN USA stamp. I would happily replace my Mitsu's and toshibas for a TV made in USA. Buy New Balance shoes, they are still made in USA
I thought those might have been tombstones. Kind of poignant.
great information
now I looking for sony plasma tv where can i find to buy
