Miu has big plans for the new HDPC, if only they had big money to make them come true

The economy is putting the hurt on everybody these days -- and while it's no less true for Miu, the company is working feverishly to release their everything-at-once handheld, despite some serious setbacks in the funding department. Ready to go into production at the drop of a hat (and a $500,000 check), there are currently two versions of the device in development -- the basic Atom-powered netbook / PMP / e-book reader will stay at the $500 price point, while the $900 version is a dual-boot Windows XP / CE device that includes a GPS and a mobile phone. As far as we can tell the thing is still a fist-full of ugly, but we hope these crazy kids make it, and we wish them the very best. We really do.

This is relevant to my interests.
Can I use it on verizon?
Compatible with all US and overseas carriers. Hope this phones comes out someday it could be another alternative to a all purpose portable device...
What IS this thing?
That render actually looks pretty nice.
Pretty nice? A nice blank key! a nice pico space bar!! and "TEH" CAPS LOCK !!! placed so conveniently where the Win key should be!!!! And you call it nice? I bet you can't press Esc every now and then without disturbing your fragile nerve inside your carpel tunnel.
If it is the same as the rendering... and had Android... I would buy one. I'm feeling the black and red. Is it touch screen by any chance?
its funny.. i wouldnt have put you down for the android type..
Yeah... I'm pretty good at keeping it a secret...
"still a fist-full of ugly"
I think it's pretty rad looking, especially if it were running XP.
AGREED!!
yeah agreed i like it
I really like that thing....... Touch screen and you got me sold......
if it only was the size of a sidekick....i'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Aw, man... that new Sidekick looks pretty sick.
Sidekick?
Oh, crap... I forgot some sort of "end joke" tag. I know it's not actually a Sidekick, except for it looking exactly like one.
dam that sidekick does look nice...
o0o0 AND it runs windows ! mmm tasty
That is a damn sexy device. I don't know where the bag of ugly is coming from.
ah they were probably talking about the desktop background... :P
but seriously that device is one beauty! i would probably get one (and save that company :D)
This is engadget we are talking about here unless it is white or aluminum and presented by a guy in a black turtle neck it is all ugly.
It seems it would be very hard to use that keyboard the way it is recessed like that.
I would totally see "A Fistful of Ugly" if it had Clint Eastwood in it.
thats what she said
:P
Though old, Clint Eastwood is certainly a good-looking man at his age. Just like Billy Crystal sung: "Most men your age are either dead or dying. But not Clint Eastwood, You just keep rolling along."
Clint Eastwood FTW!
They should offer a different OS choice: Ubuntu-UMPC with Android.
I might buy that combo.
Please ignore all of the "whatta ye mean, ugly?" comments, as this thing is hideous.

Look for it at Walmart wrapped in hard plastic shrink in the toy section.
I can't believe Engadget thinks this is a fugly umpc.... it looks brilliant.
Brilliant.... if Tegra didn't exist I wud definitely be saving for that one...
I thought it was some weird chair/media center display piece or a really nice set of scales. It's Ugly to the Max! Is that a Self Destruct button on the left for when real phone/umpc users see you with this monstrosity.
I'd definitely buy it, especially if it runs Windows XP. I wonder who engadget gets their design sense from. Amazing that they're calling this ugly, but called the Black on aluminum Macbook Pro a work of art.
Hopefully it's thin, and has a touch screen, for at least the mobile phone version. I would not want to have to open it every time I want to make a phone call.
I'd hit it.
BIG MONEY BIG MONEY BIG MONEY NO WAMMY NO WAMMY NO WAMMY....
STOP!!!!
Meh. I liked the older 'uglier' version better.
This is pretty nice looking, but the keyboard is awful. The keys are offset to one another and the positioning and size of some of the keys is awful, for example the spacebar. If they rethought the keyboard a bit this would be a hell of a lot more tempting.
Don't worry, some WoW freak will buy it. And then everyone else will. And people will be walking into lampposts playing it.
As least the carriers will upgrade their systems now.
