GPS,
Lowrance rolls out Outback, Safari, Sierra GPS units

Anyone that dreads the thought of needing to take a GPS beyond the comfy confines of their vehicle will likely want to steer clear of these, but the more adventurous out there will no doubt find plenty to like in Lowrance's new trio of GPS units. Appropriately (if unimaginatively) dubbed the Outback, Safari, and Sierra, these each boast 2.7-inch LCDs, along with a microSD card slot, all the usual outdoor-friendly GPS features, and some nifty additions like a barometric altimeter and 3D electronic compass on the higher end models. Look for them to be available in May for between $230 and $550.

"Appropriately (if unimaginatively) dubbed the Outback, Safari, and Sierra"
I'll take those unimaginative names over stupid names like GPSXL2201Y, LSSO77PS, and OMGWTFBBQ. I hate companies like TV manufacturers that brought this type of disease into my life! Who honestly can remember product names like that?! I have a hard enough time remembering phone numbers, my brain is not a bar code scanner! Whew, my point is, I welcome easy to remember names into my life no matter how generic.
Whatchamacallit?
i really like how the handhelds are capable or showing a actual satellite map of the area your in. pretty nice. i wonder if it displays roads. though i like the garmin series of the satellite gps's, they got that big wheely joystick thing. alright ima shut up now cuz im loosing this
Anyone WHO
Banhammer please!!!
why do you need a barometric altimeter? GPS gives you three co-ords Lat , Long, and Altitude. You need a clear view of the sky, ie mounted on top of an aeroplane or in a hand-held gps, and the error is 1.5x the horizontal, but so what if your +/-30m out your not trying to land a plane with this.
As a a mountaineer I see the need.
When it comes to altitudes I've seen errors between what the GPS says and the real thing of even hundreds of meters.. of curse, not always that high, but still.
altitude pretty useless when is that inaccurate
A barometer isn't accurate either, after all pressure gets influenced by other things than just plain height.
That's rather simple: weather prediction.
