Nokia ships one millionth 5800 XpressMusic, does a little dance
Okay, so we're going on the assumption that the 500,000 figure uttered by Nokia CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo during this week's Q4 earnings call was a touch old -- you know, considering that the outfit is now trumpeting the shipment of a cool million. Following a (very!) successful UK launch, Nokia has just shipped its one millionth Tube, which is the handset maker's first mass market touchscreen device. And to think -- it hasn't even debuted in many corners of the globe yet.

Technically, the gadget is sold if it left the factory. So, iLove, Apple dumped millions of iPhony in the trash, and they could claim they sold millions.
Oh so modest Engadget. Really you know its the publicity from your post this morning which caused them to sell the extra half a million in a day
Why do you think Apple pay them so much?
It's not fair! I make things up by hallucinate myself and I only got $0.65 per purch-fi story, and you guys at Engadget never have to make up anything and yet, make a huge fortune out of it. Every time I think of this, I feel a little more suicidal than the last.
make a little love
How can they be in factories when they have been shipped?
Woops, meant warehouses. The networks aren't allowed to sell these for a few more days but I'm sure Nokia have already shipped the customised devices to the UK networks and have included this in the figures.
Yes, it's the number of shipped devices for orders, which includes the carriers ordering it.
Carrier orders are usually covering the first month, so I would say that 500,000 is the expectation of UK sales in February (not a small number).
Also, the 5800 is produced in Hungary and that factory restarted production in January only. So the +500,000 announcement means 3 weeks output = Nokia has around 750,000 monthly output, 2,2 million quarterly output for the 5800 in Q1.
True. It says clearly shipped, not sold, on Nokia's press release.
They aren't as dumb as Apple who claimed to have sold 6,9 million phones in Q3 2008, and then got embarassed by Gartner's smartphone marketshare survey, which showed that Apple had shipped 6,9 miilion phones and sold only 4,5 million.
Dude, Apple wasn't embarassed by anyone. They specifically stated that 2M phones were to build channel inventory in the earnings conference call. Of course, you KNEW that.
There is always a one-time bump when new product is released by any mfr. The same holds true for Nokia's Tube. You ship the phones to a carrier. Those phones are sold and paid for by the carrier. They may be sitting in the carrier's warehouse, but them's the breaks.
A lot of that may very well be sales, since for example Vodafone UK will be offering it, and other carriers etc. They could move a lot of these easily, seeing how they aren't very expensive unlocked/unbranded. I'd imagine the price would be very good with contract.
"Espoo - Nokia announced today that it has shipped the millionth Nokia 5800 XpressMusic device, a milestone that coincides with the successful sales start of the device in the UK. The latest in Nokia's XpressMusic range, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is the company's first mass market touch screen device."
They have shipped, as in made a million and sent them out into the world to be bought!
Nokia has presumably sold the phones to the networks... Unless they don't get paid till the networks do.
Given Nokia's strong brand name and 5800's more than fair price, it's no wonder Nokia shipped 1m of these guys. I think 5800 -- a solid midrange with an awesome specs -- will be one of those devices that will help Nokia retain its market share in the first half of 2009 and if they come up with some thrilling gadgets at the MWC, they can go back to 38-39% in 2010. Good job, Nokia!
Does it really need a guitar pick?
Yes
that's not the rock star mindset BigD...
Guitar pick style stylus seem like a decent plan to me.
I play guitar hero on mine. Broooowwww (please insert trem noise here)!
BrooowwwwwwWoWoWoW!
I haven't used stylus or the guitar pick since I bought the 5800 (5 weeks now).
But for the mini-qwerty or handwriting you need those. (It has 4 input methods to choose from, the most used are alphanumeric and full-qwerty. Those are the "finger" ones.)
I think this guitar-pick thingy is just a design choice - and a nice one, it makes the 5800 look like a little devil in red :-)
The 5800 is a decent phone. No phone is perfect and people have their choices. The figures reflect that Nokia has improved its game against the competition.
I got to handle one at the NYC flagship store and was very impressed at the quality of the resistive screen. If I had to choose right now, I'd certainly have picked that over the N8x or N9x models that are out right now. But of course, I wait on the N97 like the rest of the world.
Yay, go 5800! Got mine this morning from the Nokia Flagship in London, person number 12 in the queue :D
Can you plug it in to a Windows 7 machine (or virtual machine) and take screenshots? I'm very interested to see how it looks and what features are available in the new device stage. It says the 5800 is supported.
Well I'm downloading W7 and I'll install it on a virtual Drive so watch this space.
I got one for myself last month and I can attest that it is quite brilliant. The only real problem I have is that there aren't that many applications available for it yet.
Why is there a guitar pick on the lanyard? Will this phone make me better at guitar?
Shipped? Launch in the UK? If by launch you mean its a month away from release?
This phone is buggy as hell.. and considering I'm a long time 7710 user, it's got to be real bad! The more recent firmware these devices are shipping with (only made available to bought phones in the last two weeks) actually made it feel a bit worse.. screen isn't as responsive :( This together with the fact the build quality is awful.. speaker volume in calls dropping and stuff.. Apparently its easy enough to open the phone, bend bits of metal and crunch back together! Hmm.. Buggy firmware, terrible build quality? ahhh.. Nokia just relased their new phone platform then.. Can't wait for the N97, my gf has the 5800.. its baaad.. she likes it though.. As a rule of thumb I recon the first 10000 handsets shipped are great quality.. the rest.. less so.. I remember getting a pre-release 7110 "matrix" phone.. it was awesome build quality. Comparing it to phones mates received over the next few months.. urgh shudder!
Your use of the word 'apparently' indicates you've never used it. Your rant is therefore valueless.
Well done, Nokia!
Looking forward to getting mine soonish...

Love mine, does everything just about everything I need.
Nice play, great way to regain those market shares that you lost
One factor in Nokia's marketshare drop is this phone.
Why? So many people have been waiting to buy this one that the sales of others have dropped.
And some of them will wait a bit more to buy N97. ( Like me) :)
Here we go again.., affordable phone with multitask?
it's sure iPhone killer, atleast, in terms of price
Does it really look thin like the picture ?
Usually, Nokia's products are quite thick comparing to Samsung or Sony.
LOL @ "ships"
dont buy the rubbish it sucks used it for 1 day got fed up of all the double tapping sold it to some dude for half the price
I am buying this.
Nice looking handset. Functional. Nokia has a hit. WinMo users all dumped their handsets and went out to buy this.
I have this phone and I love it!!!! I just don't like how other people mistake it with other phones like LG, Samsung, etc. haha In my opinion though, it's better than the iPhone, but iPhone has nice games and it is sensitive to touch, so for all the iPhone lovers, please don't shoot me. haha
YAY 5800!!! :]]
