You *never* sacrifice function for aesthetics? I dunno about that one.
Having said that, I'm guessing the *real* answer to this question was "We did the market research. Not that many people care about expandable storage, so we didn't bothing trying to find a place to squeeze it in" - but that doesn't sound as goofy and new-agey.
I dont think they sacrificed function, if they found out that only 3 % of people will use more than 8GB but a high percentage of people would appreciate the design, also design is not just about aesthetics, comfort, size, expression. Can you imagine an iphone with a microSD slot? is like saying I lack of stuff. Comunication is important, the palm pre is saying, this is THE phone.
"Not that many people care about expandable storage" Exactly. You could rework that to such things as: "Not that many people care about removable batteries" "Not that many people care about MMS" "Not that many people care about "
I think a lot of people on Engadget don't realize how "fringe" they (we) are in terms of wants/needs for devices. If the majority of people wanted MicroSD, removable batteries, etc than Apple wouldn't have sold all those iPhones, iPods, etc. Most people (i.e. the people that these companies sell to and hence make their money from) just don't care. To most people a micro SD slot is just another hole on their phone that they never use that gets filled up with pocket lint.
Apple, and now Palm apparently, understand that successful devices are not necessarily the ones with the biggest list of features. For a lot of people simple is the best feature of all.
On the other hand, I do want my copy and paste Apple. I only need it like once a month, but when I need it, I need it badly, like for uber long WEP and WPA keys.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Bad excuse. Design isn't just about looking good, it's about functioning well. You never sacrifice function for aesthetics.
The Average Consumer is more aware of aesthetics then tech specs. Apple used that to their advantage for market penetration. Now Palm is too.
