Alpine delivers trio of new in-car navigators
If that '92 Riviera is getting a bit long in the tooth, Alpine's got a trifecta of ways to simply spruce it up rather than take on an all-too-burdensome new car payment. Both the IVA-W203/P1 and IVA-W505/P1 are double-DIN head units with touchscreen displays (6.5- / 7-inches, respectively), support for iPods / sat ratio / HD Radio / Bluetooth, preloaded NAVTEQ maps of the US and Canada, a foursome of map viewing options and text-to-speech for good measure. For those with single-DIN gaps in the dash, there's the all new IVA-D106, which offers up a slide-out 7-inch touch panel, 18-watt x 4 amplifier and support for navigation via the optional NVE-P1 drive. All three systems are available as we speak for $1,100, $1,400 and $350 in order of mention.

Aftermarket double dins always seem to lack something. On the other hand Kenwood is always ahead of the curve because there maps are always gamin integrated.
I always love someone who has no idea what they are talking about
i agree with u bro.,stick with alpine n pioneer.,only way to go.here in the usa.these put factory systems to shame hardcore.
Wow, all this expensive tech in a car and still the auto industry cannot find a way to install a cheap $50 camera into the dash to record accidents....
Car manufactures are not only in bed with oil and insurance companies, they are sniffing the crotch!
The issue I have with all aftermarket units, is lack of oem integration with vehicles that have the climate controls tied into the radio/head unit
Why should they, when companies like PAC and PIE make adapters that take care of that problem already?
Go to Crutchfield, put in your car's make and model, and it will tell you exactly which adapters you need to make it work with your OEM setup. Not complicated.
not really new, except the iva-d106.... i've had the w505 since last may minus the nav. they are just comboing the units....
Exactly... they basically took the 505 and the 203, and hard wired in the Alpine NVE-P1 Nav unit instead of having you buy the two separately. The only problem with this little setup is you actually save 200-300 bucks buying the head and nav units separately, so what's the point of buying the two newer models that are identical spec-wise, unless you aren't smart enough to do the mechanical equivalent of inserting a tape into a VCR? Push button, face plate slides down, stick nav cart into unit, face slides back up, done. Yeah, that whole 5 seconds of manual labor is worth saving a couple hundred bucks to me.
The hell is with you lately Alpine? First the cheap plastic build quality in your newer models, and now this: trying to sell me shit by telling me it's shine-o-la? It's like you're trying to become the new Sony or something.
Ohhhhh, I love that sat ratio. I hear it's the next big thing.
The IVA-D106 is $1,000 not $350. The NVE-P1 navigation add-on for the D106 is $350 as is the PMD-DOK2 iPod add-on.
The NVE-P1 is $299 at Crutchfield right now, $250 elsewhere online, and probably less on ebay.
The 106 is also $899, and the MSRP of the PMD-DOK2 is $230, but usually goes for closer to $199.
Not sure where you are getting your prices from, but I wouldn't shop there if I were you unless you like being ripped off.
I wasn't stating available pricing I was trying to correct the article. The writer stated that the D106 is priced at $350 when in actuality the original press release states it's $1,000. Then I commented that the $350 products are the GPS and iPod add-ons.
VGA IN ,VGA IN, VGA IN.Alpine just LISTEN for once PLEASE....
These Alpine units are a big problem.. I work for a mobile audio dealer. We deal with Alpine, Pioneer, and Kenwood. We love the Alpine head units, but these 203's and 505's with the P1 have been problems.
Not only does the P1 freeze up a lot when it's working because it's Windows based, but we have a unit that crashed a couple times, we put it in a demo car, and the P1 now cannot be seen by the 203.
Pioneer really lost it too with the AVIC-F700 and F900. We love the Kenwood DNX5120's, bulletproof unit with Garmin nav and Parrot bluetooth. Looking forward to the DNX5140/6140.
I was upset that these Alpine units didn't work out for us. They look nice on paper and are nice to use, but the problems aren't worth it. We've had two problem units and we haven't sold that many more.
Not sure what you are doing wrong with your installs, but we've never had any complaints with our P1's, other then people arguing that for grand, the 505 should already have Nav built in.
I heard some talk when the P1's first came out about some units shipping with buggy firmware, but I was told that was long since taken care of. How old are your units?
Speaking of Parrot bluetooth, you see Alpine's new bluetooth module is using tech and software licensed from Parrot? About time they dropped their own stuff because we got so tired of customers complaining about "sounding like they were calling from underwater" that we just stopped carrying the damn things. This one guy was so convinced it was our fault that it took swapping out the unit three times, and moving the mic to 9 different positions before he finally agreed that the problem was the unit itself, and let us install a Parrot model. That thing sounded great and looked good on his dash, yet he still had to bitch about having to use a separate interface before finally leaving. Yeesh... freakin' people.
190th and Western. Welcome to the hood, y'all.
This navi looks like something from 7 years ago.... Alpine get in the game people...

It's disappointing that they didn't include PulseTouch in the W505. I have the 205 and was thinking of upgrading, but I really like that feature.
On a side note, my Blackbird II crashes a lot and now the nav screen looks yellow when docked. The quality of their nav units isn't the highest, to say the least.
I believe we put the buggy 203 in about two or three months ago. We had another 505 that went bad, brand new out of the box, and Alpine sent us a refurbished unit as replacement... pretty unsatisfactory.
I agree about the older Alpine bluetooth module, for a long time we were recommending people install Parrot kits unless they were absolutely sold on the Alpine. The new Parrot based module should be pretty exciting.
