HP's iPAQ Data Messenger finally up for pre-order
In reality, HP should've made sure that its iPAQ Data Messenger shipped alongside the Voice Messenger back in December, but given that it didn't, we suppose it's a small victory that the handset is finally up for pre-order in the UK today. Of course, getting any halfway intelligent Briton to spend £419 ($593) on this already forgotten WinMo 6.1 device (with Mobile World Congress just weeks away, no less) is a challenge we're thrilled to not be responsible for.

shouldn't the y and z be in opposite places?
That is a German qwertz keyboard where the z and the y is swapped.
Not just German. It's used in quite a few European countries in the East. (ie Slovakia, Czechia, Austria...)
not impressive spec... thanks!
+1
WinMo 6.5 is coming out soon, why get 6.1 now?
No one buys a £419 phone. Free on a £35/Month contract for 18months is more like it.
Not everyone is cheap.
Software aside, that's one sexy phone.
Strong resemblance to HTC Touch Pro (Fuze)... well, I guess it doesn't matter as long as this device is good. Hopefully they'll have some Touch Flo kinda interface (which rocks, after the latest ROM updates!) and not use the basic Winmo interface...
The fact the screen is off in that pic I'm doubting it.
My mistake screen is not off, just showing a generic pic. Just the same...
The revised version of the beloved HP Oak... which we saw 2 years ago as "Vodafone's leaked 2008 lineup scheduled for November 08"....
An HP stock owner better do some selling fast...
HP stock owners (also known as "employees") will most likely be the only people buying this device, given that HP is notorious for having very short lists of devices internally approved for Push Email.
Those who have had their iPaq 915s for over two years now have an "upgrade", if you want to call it that.
Sell a stock based on ONE minor division that doesn't make up a significant % of sales? I wouldn't take your financial advice unless you can provide a reason why HP as a company is behind the times.
I agree though. I imagine this year's phones with more resolution and larger screens. Hopefully more Android options and better battery life.My dream is a a return of some decent cameras with xenon to make the ultimate work hard play hard phone.
Well it's falling behind in desktops, netbooks and phones... not WAY behind though.
Falling behind in notebooks and desktops?? It's the #1 computer company in the world. It has held that title for 2+ years now. FALLING BEHIND?
I really like the design, I just wish the screen was bigger.
WOW -still 320 x 240!?! I would have considered that antiquated last year! Same amount of memory as my two year old phone. Is this phone free with a subscription or did it sit in someones desk for a couple of years when they realized they forgot to release it in 2007?
Except the Touch Pro has more memory, 4 times the resolution... But who knows maybe the battery lasts longer and the BT works better on the HP than the Touch Pro.
Now this here is an iThing I like.
sad
it really look likes the htc phone just blue not black
I have a quick question: How can people put out anything that has an i- in the front without infringing upon apple's i-everything else? Is the i- thingy part of apple's actual copyright or is it free for everyone. And if it is free for everyone, why hasn't apple applied for those copyright patents or intellectual rights?
Actually Apple doesn't even own the name "iPhone", it is owned by Cisco.
Putting Win Mo on this is like putting vinyl seats in a Bentley.
I think that the iPaq has been around longer than any of Apples "i" Products so thats probably the reason. I could be wrong though.
Yes, the specs are not impressive and the looks are OK, but to decide if it will be worth buying or if it's gonna be another wreck like SE X1, we'll have to wait and see how it performs.
I love my HTC touch HD but I deeply hated my previous HTC touch pro, so much so that I brought it back less than 2 weeks after I bought it, I don't know if HTC improved the software or if it's just the bigger touch screen that makes the difference, but I found the Touch Pro irritating and frustrating, but have no problems with the touch HD or my other phone: the excellent samsung Omnia.
Since HTC is reading at least 2 versions of touch HD sporting a full qwerty k-board (the Tungsten, and the Iridium, plus the multimedia monster Whitestone) this thing is gonna face a pretty stiff competion.
Oh, even if Win Mo. 6.5, and hopefully also 7 are on their way, there's no reason to wait for them before buying the phone you like: you can always upgrade and install the new ROMs once they became available.
Some times ago I installed Win Mo. 6.1 on an old Qtek Blue Angel that I bought years ago with Win Mo. 5 in it; after installing also .net3.5 and the latest patches, fixes, apps and programs (including touch flo 3D) it works so well that I can't bring myself to sell it for the measly price it would command nowadays.
kinda agree, but if the wm 6.5 or 7 gonna support 24-bit (16 million) color, the current hardware will not perfectly exhibit, thus have to spend for a new one.
btw, i've used my touch pro for a few months now, and it works quite good for me. (rom version: 1.94.xx.xx, haven't update for awhile because the 1.94 one works aright and not lagging too much~)
and i think the meizu m8 and hto hd (not htc)'s specs are quite seductive... except they both lack of 3g support... and hopefully they will released 3g version soon!... fortunatelly, as china has recentlly adds 3g support, i guess they will be finnally realeased... soon, hopefully:)
Ha - a german keyboard layout for the UK?
Good job Hitler didn't win!
already available here in malta since jan. check forestals.com
Every single person who is not an idiot and can afford to spend more than zero for his/her phone.
As you justly noted here, after the fourth price reduction in 8 months, the iPhone 3G 16GB is immediatly obtainable for free on a 6 months contract that for the equivalent of about 30USD/month offers unlimited broadband data.
Still there are very few takers apart for the few Apple fanboys, but those all got their silly toy paying a ridiculously high price, standing in line and even causing shortages (and laughs) in the first couple of months it came out.
Now second hand unlocked iPhones are everywhere, but anyone who can afford to spend a couple of hundred euros for his/her phone prefers something serious, like HTC touch HD or Pro, or Cruise, or Samsung Omnia or Memory, or LG Renoir, etc.
I bet that soon we're gonna find the iPhones in cereal boxes and easter eggs, together with the tamagotchis and other cheap and outdated electronic gadgets.
I can't trust HP after their debacle with the hx4700.
They put a version of WinMo 5 on it that crippled the device...nothing worked reliably.
It is only thanks to xda forums that I've finally got a SMOKING WM6 on it...and everything works flawlessly a2dp, multi-tasking, etc.
HP...between crappy distros and bloatware can't be depended upon. They will @hit-can your investment as soon as the next model comes out.
Sorry HP....five times bitten.
How come these phones today -- looks the same.
