Video: Portal gun replica hands-on
You didn't think we'd let this one go without a followup, did you? Portal gun replica creator Harrison Krix was gracious enough to invite us to his workshop and get some hands-on time with it. Let's get the two most common inquiries out of the way first: no, it's not photoshopped and no, it doesn't actually "work" (as in, it doesn't create portals). The armament weighs between five or ten pounds, and all color shifting is done via a switch inside the back end. The middle tube, interestingly enough, is an acrylic plunger handle with a clear matte. The 26-year old graphic designer and graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design estimates he spent 150 hours and $350 in parts, although later models should take much less time. He's had offers to create more iterations from employees at Bungie and Infinity Ward, and he's thinking of making one to give to the Penny Arcade crew for their Child's Play charity. For a look at it both in action and disassembled, check out the video after the break. Next up? A BioShock Big Daddy costume, with arm extensions and a working drill, just in time for next August's Dragon Con in Atlanta.

PEW PEW PEW!!!
I so want that.
The gun is a lie.
Just keep telling yourself that. The pain of your soul and insane amounts jealousy that keeps you up at night will still be there.
That cake is a Spy!
A part of me is saying "make some game props"...another part says "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ"
Id go with "zzzzzzzz"
This is awesome!
KGB- as a member of the unseated secret police you are one of the last people who would know what THE PEOPLE want, comrade.
FAILED news of the day!! Does any one give two shits about some one making a copy of something that no one gives three shits about??
Dude, this is Engadget...are you kidding me?
@KGB
EPIC FAIL. The only thing the people of engadget doesn't care about is your opinion.
What's with internet dorks and the over use of terms like "fail" and "epic fail"... It's already SO passé...
As opposed to the stuck up internet 'elite'? I may be a dork, but you sir are an ID-10-T.
PASSÉD!
i'd buy that for a dollar
I'd buy that for considerably more than a dollar.
Pff, it would be funnier if it was made of cardboard :P
So now I am confused.......Is the Cake still a lie?
Mega WANT. Valve, start selling this in your store.
thats an awesome replica of an awesome weapon/tool.
I was watching this while "Layla" was playing..... IMO better soundtrack......
SWEET AS PROP!
"Doesn't actually make portals"... Well that's disappointing. Oh well. Perhaps it could be retrofitted with a Nerf gun?
That or an airsoft gun.
Maybe fit it with 2 smaller paintball guns, one with blue paintballs, one with red, and then rig the triggers to be vertical so there is one trigger for each the pointer and middle fingers. Or a paint gun that literally sprays paint........ and a couple of long hoses or something..........
How much does it weigh by the way?
You should try reading the article. Just saying...
Wait, you're not supposed to look at the operational end of the device!
Very nice work by the guy. Thanks for sharing the video!
it brews beer and bakes cake!
that's a lie.
awesome
It's always interesting to see how huge success is made.
Now we just need someone to make the cake that is a lie!
We have the portol gun, and the companion cube. So the Cake is what is left.
I had a Portal cake for my 18th birthday.
hint: check out the WIP gallery.
Actually, this technique could be used to create gun turrets. Preferably with a bright red laser scanning back and forth.
"I see you!"
Resin cast IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now he just needs to make it do the cool recoil effect and it'll be perfect...until we get actual portals going
What an awesome build. Incredible quality, I'm jealous.
Here are some true things:
1) Guitar Hero and similar game-plus-snazzy-controller(s) packages have crazy-ass marketing power.
2) This replica is too effing sweet.
3) Portals, too, is sweet.
Obvious conclusion:
For the love of god, make this a wireless controller. For portals. Do it do it do it.
Hell YES SCAD graduate!
Awesome seeing it in glorious colour-changing action!
It's a good thing it doesn't actually work, or the world wouldn't last much longer :o
It would be nice to see this put to some use as a controller.
1. Add 3D motion sensing capability
2. Link with VR goggles.
3. Add full body force feedback for complete Portal-playing experience
4. ???
5. Profit!
I originally thought step 4 might be 'eat cake' but I'm beginning to learn it might be 'avoid dying in a fire'.
This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
Only a game as amazing, innovative and entertaining as Portal could have such dedicated fans.
You've made it. Great. Now get a model in an orange jump suit and take some photos to really show it off. I'd like to see your wonderful replica in context! :)
If you don't have the funds to do this, then... maybe Valve would. Pose it to them. I'm sure that they'd listen, and I'm sure that, simply from the effort you've already gone to, it would be a no-brainer for them to spend a bit for the continued promotion of one of their products.
Again, great work. I'm crazy jealous. :)
He made this for his girlfriend, I think he made it so she could wear it with the rest of the outfit to some party. I hope they get pictures of the whole deal.
I think I'm going to go play it, it's Friday afternoon, and I have had a rough week.
you should make a the gravity gun form half life, or how about a portal gun that projects portals on a wall, like those time projecting laser pens. That would be awesome
