Buffalo rolls out 7-inch USB external display

It may not boast quite the same desk-friendly looks as some of its competitors, but Buffalo's new 7-inch FTD-W71USB display should at least get the job done in a pinch, and most likely do so for a bargain price if the company's track record is any indication. As with similar displays, this one boasts a standard 800 x 480 resolution, and it can be oriented vertically or horizontally to suit the task at hand. Otherwise, you can expect a reasonable 300 nits brightness, a 500:1 contrast ratio, and a whopping 25ms response time, which'll no doubt dash the hopes of anyone actually thinking of using it as a primary monitor. No firm word on a price, but it should be available in Japan by the end of the month.

I'd totally buy something like this if it were under 50 bucks.
Considering you can buy a 19" monitor for about a 100 bucks nowadays, that's all this should cost.
You=Fail.
7" is wide screen and you can't really get a 19" wide screen for $100.
Besides, the whole topic hear is that it has a USB(U Suck Balls) connection.
19" LCD: $109.99 (AR)

"...for about a 100 bucks nowadays."
He said *ABOUT,* Chase. Not exactly.
Ass.
@chase
I got a 19" WS from Staples for $80. PS, you're late for English class.
@Chase: goodbye.
this would make a good digital photoframe wouldnt it?
What is the market for this sort of device?
I do not see a need for this at home or work. I'd like to hear how you'd put this thing to use.
Ever use Dreamweaver? It'd be great to have the toolbars in a separate screen. I have a 22" monitor, but it still isn't large enough for Dreamweaver.
If your a stock broker, graphic designer or music producer it is definitely a usable product. As for home users I cannot think of a situation where it would be worthwhile having one of these pricey buggers on my desk. Besides that I prefer keeping my eyes on one screen, switching between two with different size, brightness and resolution is quite tiring for the eyes.
I use one for IM windows and contacts list on a seperate screen for when I'm gaming. When I'm not gaming, i use AWC from download.com to cycle through pictures every 5 minutes on it, much like a photo frame. Quality doesn't have to be amazing, but AWC auto-sizes any picture to fit any dimensions with its worst fit setting.
The whole point of it is that its versatile. A second monitor for stock tickers, AIM/MSN, porn download status, Battlestar Galatica, it all works. The key determinate is price.
You must not do much multitasking where the two tasks are related and you constantly need to get information from 1 window to another.... and the applications you use really don't function well when they aren't maximized.
I haven't used either Dreamweaver or Fireworks since version 3 but I occasionally used Photoshop. I tend to work on JPEGs from 10-22MP DSLR's (just for reference.) The toolbar doesn't bother me enough to warranty a second monitor or any kind. Only time I ever toggle is to switch to iTunes to change the song playing.
If these things are $100, why not spend an extra $100 and get a 17-20" that's a million times more versitile?
If you've got OS X, when Spaces is implemented properly, it does wonders.
I saw this and immediately though of a server room monitor. A cheap portable device that just plugs into your rack to monitor logs and stuff, where refresh rate / resolution don't matter. But yeah I can think of tons of uses for a cheap small monitor.
I want one of the touchscreen ones for my photoshop work. I already have two monitors but it would be awesome to use my wacom and just tap other tools and settings on a small ancillary display. Much quicker than mousing to pick colors, etc.
Can they get one of these in the damn States already...
Sorry, but:
- 25ms
- No price tag
- Japan only release (s0 far)
- ugly as hell (personal taste, granted)
So, I'm dying to get a couple of those mini monitors thingies, but how this model was even able to be caught by the radar?
thats NOT what she said
"boasts a standard 800 x 480 resolution"
This is not something I would "boast" about... I know Eghlish is my second language, but I believe "boasts" means something totally different.
I think you'll find Spass is spelled Spaz.
It does boast a resolution of 800x480, that is how boast can be used like "I know Eghlish is my second language, but I believe"
800x480 is a perfectly acceptable resolution for a 7" screen aimed at housing widgets or toolbars.
Mr Spass, Is your first name Jack?
An iPhone has a 3.5 inch screen with HVGA resolution (320x480). This screen is double the size of iPhone screen with (800 x 480). Are you implying iPhone is not boasting too in your opinion?
What's that black plastic trumpet here for? A tribute to Louis?
And that IS exactly what she said.
ew
I feel for your girlfriend. That must not be any good for her.
@Brian: girlfriend? You're such a starry-eyed optimist!
Would be far more useful if it was a touchscreen
There's one Engadget wrote an article about which has a touchscreen option. FYI.

If they made it look nicer I might consider getting one just for kicks.... :P
But right now...it's to ugly
Why the hell don't they throw in a HDMI input, that'd make up a perfect, low-cost, external display for a camcorder, which is what I want!
this would go great with my eee pc!
Nightstand tv?
I make music on my 24" iMac. I already have a 22" monitor plugged into the mini DVI port. I would love one of these as a third monitor (might seem like overkill to non-musos, but anyone who uses Logic and lots of Native Instruments apps would understand)
The question is can iMacs handle 3 monitors?
That would be awesome for having CNN or some sort of news site up while you worked on your main stuff. There is a shelf just to my right at eye level that would be a perfect spot for that.
Great for a docking station! You could have a laser keyboard and mouse, use this monitor, and plug in your smartphone or pda for a web-enabled lightweight computing station! Cool! Or maybe for development for small screens? Like the back of airport seat screens, or smartphone screens... Great tech!
And does it have a VESA mount for the VESA-mounted VIA Eden PC you guys commented on a couples days back? Oh yeah, and touchscreen?
If it's fifty bucks, I'm getting it just to hack into my wall for a home automation pc.
What's up with the ugly stand????

What I can think is "Go Big, or Go Home" and "Super-Size Me".
Are the TX/RX data rates on wusb devices high enough to support monitors such as this. Reason being I'll like to add one these in my kitchen or side table in my living room for reading stuff like emails, text messages, etc when im away from pc.

It's great to see that now we can get extra screen time.
