New Zealander gives classified DAP back to US, gets a new one in exchange
Aw, lookie here -- a happy ending! That suddenly popular Chris Ogle -- you know, the New Zealander who accidentally purchased an MP3 player full of classified US Army documents from a thrift store -- is basking in the glory of his 14th minute of fame. According to a new report from Reuters, Mr. Ogle peacefully handed the device back over to US authorities, and for his cooperation, a brand spanking new player was handed over to him. It's unclear what kind of unit he received and if it was your tax money paying for it, but we get the feeling we'll never truly know answers to either question. As for Ogle's next move? We hear he's jockeying for a guest spot on Flight of the Conchords.

So he had time to copy classified docs off the new one and he gets a new MP3 player? I'm sure his name just got added to a rather nice database and/or he had to sign a rather binding piece of paper in exchange for making sure said docs remain lost.
Or he may end up lost in somewhere unpleasant.
You obviously didn't read the "read" link.
"Ogle said the officials asked him what computers the player's files had been loaded onto and whether he had made copies and then photographed some of the files, but would not say how sensitive the information was.
"They asked where I'd bought it from, the timeframe that I bought it in," Ogle said."
And what do you reckon the chances are of the US Authorities having pre-loaded that new device with some "useful utilities" just to check up on a few things, eh?
Probably not high but hey, it's fun to wonder about these things.
I also heard he got a new home as well...
His address is....
Mr. Ogle
Cell Block C4
New Gitmo, Cuba
@JAmerican
Wow thats cool. I thought his new home was somewhere 6 feet under ground...
When the hell were Bret and Jermaine dressed up in bunny costumes?
photoshoots, they suck. someone thinks its original to be ironic still so here we are . . .
I like em :D
It's Jemaine actually... No "r". I've only seen the show twice, but I know this because my friend named his mandolin after him and later figured out the spelling was wrong.
Didn't know they were Furries though.
hope they gave him something nice, the one with the data was kind of a crap gadget
Yeah, they didn't even have any info on nukes/launch codes/B2 bombers/F22 Raptors/Submarine locations/SkyNet/Gravity Gun/Portal Gun? What kinda crapgadget is that? :P
I know it's a shocking revelation to most of you, but sometimes people are just honest for the sake of honesty.
Agreed. I also find it unsettling that you are the only one saying it. Then again, that was two days ago :)
He got a Sony - so irconically a Japanese MP3 player for a replacelment - this should have been a chance to high light America's superior MP3 player technology - and give him a Zune....

Chances are the new MP3 player has a tracking chip inside, in case this New Zealander runs wild with the duplicated files.
And where does it say it's a Sony?
@lotech
So he would have to send it back to authorities for service? Zunes aren't sold outside of US of A.
I live in NZ and I've got a Zune. There are ways and means, fellas.
hah! it seems to have been military 'pr0n'.
This TVOne web story states:
"A foreign news agency has told ONE News that a woman living in Oklahoma has revealed that her home was broken into several months ago and several flash drives with military information on them were stolen. It's possible these were then porned off to the thrift shop. "
lol i can't believe people are actually using the tvnz site
"lol i can't believe people are actually using the tvnz site"
It's because TVNZ/One News were the ones that original got this story, and the follow up.
he got a new sony walkman MP3
FOTC FTW
reminds me of burn after reading...
Well, at least their shit is now secure...
So he didn't go the Russian embassy to try and sell it?
He did, but Putin said they did not want his help to improve Russia's IT infrastructure. They are not invalids, after all.
"...the New Zealander who accidentally purchased an MP3 player full of classified US Army documents..."
how do you accidentally purchase something? :p
"It's unclear...if it was your tax money paying for it..."
oh i guarantee we paid for it.
I can see it now...
Agent Smith: We got anything to trade this guy for the information he has or are we gonna have to do what we did to Steve Fossett...
Agent Jones: Well....I got a walkman I don't use.... (What I got a Zune!).... Do you you think he will trade for it?
Agent Smith: Did you see the mp3 player this guy bought in the first place..... Of course he will trade. Just don;t let him see your Zune...
I have a question...why were the docs on a MP3 player in the first place? I mean, who puts files on an MP3 player? If it was an accident, then how did they get there? I didn't read the link, but I don't know if that info would be in there. :P
Easy... The original owner used the MP3 as a pen-drive.
True...but that is kinda odd... :P
after getting off the phone with the US gov't, they apparently did not receive the classified document-filled MP3 player, as they were going to exchange with Ogle tomorrow. In other news, a small pyrotechnic charge, which is about as explosive as 2/3 a stick of dynamite went missing in new zealand, as well as a Sony Walkman MP3 player.
I hope they gave him a gold plated 64GB iPod Touch or something, or else the poor guy got robbed!
How does one accidentally purchase something?
"...next thing I knew, I'd tripped, fallen and handed some money to someone else in exchange for material goods. It was the damnedest thing!"
This is awesome, every time Engadget published 'New Zealand' it boosts our economy. Which we need at the moment cause our dollar just bottomed out :( You know you're vulnerable when two guys in bunnie suits are your chief export.
I'm sure the new MP3 player is watching him...
I guess we'll have to wait until the day someone finds his mp3 for sale at a flea market.
New Zealand is not a state. :O
They weren't "classified" in the sense that the MP3 player had intelligence on it--they were just military personnel files (Ex CAPT John Smith, SSN#, DOB, etc). A big deal from a ID theft standpoint, but not national security as most of the articles about this thing have hinted.
