Sidekick LX 2009 outed in survey, could possibly be real
Whoa, whoa -- calm down hiptoppers. Don't act like you didn't know a new Sidekick was coming in the year two-thousand and nine. Actually, there is a fair reason to celebrate here, 'cause if these specs are true, the Sidekick LX 2009 will be a surefire winner. A reader over at HipTop3 reportedly came across this image above while taking an online survey, which -- as your eyes have no doubt confirmed -- shows off the very first 3G / GPS enabled Sidekick ever. Specs wise, it'll supposedly boast a 3.2-inch WVGA display (854 x 480), a 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD card slot, easy access to YouTube, MySpace and Twitter, turn-by-turn navigation and video recording capabilities. Sadly, there's still a sliver of a chance this could all be a hoax, but we know your brain isn't letting itself accept that fact at the moment, now is it?

Yeah its entirely possible....
The only thing its missing is WiFi and a powerful operating system. Didn't Engadget show a Sidekick lookalike running Vista?
holy shhh!i just shhh my pants.,could this be another attempt to dethrone the revolutionary.,so far specs are amazing, what no wifi, ouch shortcoming list.,hmmh.,will this be the "iphonekiller"?????
Sounds like an actually desirable sidekick
"Slim design" and "3.2 inch screen" and "large QWERTY keyboard" don't sound like they can really exist in one device. I'm afraid it will stop being desired after its out and people see whats actually inside and outside. Nokia N97 can make calls. Can this thing make calls?
My 14 yr old daughter will LOVE this.
my thoughts exactly. although, i don't have a 14yr old daughter or a daughter for that matter. but i imagine that's the only people that should be using sidekicks.
Ahh Sidekicks,
I remember you all to well. Other people had windows phones but no I didn't care. I had instant messaging and a sub-par camera. Good times. I eventually left my SK for a BB and now here I am with an iPhone 3G. The Pre is looking pretty nice though. Plus I'm getting tired of getting shafted on my AT&T bill every month.
Back on track, it's nice to see T-Mobile keeping the ball rolling with the SK.
Damn, that is surely nice. If I did not have a G1 I would be so looking forward to this.
what's the point? Had one, had 'em all. literally.
I hope you don't have the same attitude to women!
That's like saying all Blackberry's are alike.
Not really...it's taken the Sidekick years to include features most comparable phones have by default.
SK's were nice initially when they came out, but there are so many phones out there with similar specs and more customizable OS's.
This new SK will appear to people who have to have an SK because Paris Hilton or a sports star has one.
Actually, the appealing thing about the sidekick is that the UI is ridiculously intuitive. If you've had one for a while you can do almost anything on it without even looking at the screen. You will NEVER be able to do that on an iphone. There are keyboard shortcuts for almost anything you want to do, and everything is well laid out and easy to navigate. It doesn't have an app store, or some other fancy features, but what it does do, it does really, really well.
I thought that the Sidekick had a application store before having an application store was cool.
It does have an app store technically, but there really isn't much content on it.
There were a BOATLOAD of apps in that catalog thingy of the sidekick. and much of them were actually useful because the sidekick really couldnt do anything right besides message, browse, text and call.
but yea throw in wifi, opera mobile and at least open up that danger OS and t-mob has a winner on their hands.
Way to plan for the future with windows live
damn, that's impressive hardware for a dumbphone. Nice screen to boot.
The Sidekick is usually considered a smartphone. The Sidekick is about as "smart" as an iPhone, so if that's considered a "smartphone"...
"dumbphone"
Sometimes I wonder how long people have been following tech news. This, and other sidekicks are obviously smartphones.
featurephone at best. Like the iPhone.
I really hope they don't limit the microSD capacity to 8gb as indicated by the picture. We have 16gb microsd cards now, and 32gb can't be that far off.
They advertised the G1 as being "expandable up to 8gb" and it works perfectly fine with a 16gb card. SDHC is SDHC, if it supports 8gb then it will support 32gb.
centro supports 4gb but not 8.
Wow. This could actually get me back into the sidekick world.
why dont they just retool the damn thing and make it fresh again.
Nice, but I wish they would move from the Tmobile network.
Sidekicks would be so much cooler if T-Mobile didn't lock down the OS so hard. You can't even set your own photos to be your background because Tmo wants you to buy their stupid wallpapers for five bucks.
I enjoy T-Mobile's WinMo and Android phones because they don't load them with carrier-specific garbage and generally just leave them completely unlocked (software wise). The Sidekick, their smartest dumbphone, is the exact opposite. Locked down hard.
Actually, you can set your own background image. You can make your own full blown theme if you want to.

I'd also like to point out that the sidekick is not intended to be a smartphone, it's a dumbphone with a lot of nice features and a much better UI. Saying it doesn't function like a smartphone is silly.
much better UI? lol
No Touch Screen? PHAIL.
add a touchscreen and put windows mobile on it and i will take one, thats right i like windows mobile.
HTC Touch Pro
No WinMo, throw on Android.
Eh, sidekicks are so 2005.
Blackberry or iPhone FTW! Who cares about Sidekicks anymore?
People fail to realize that Sidekicks were originally made for deaf people, and deaf people continue to be quite a large consumer base for that product. I've met quite a few deaf people who use sidekicks.
Did they have anything good to... say.. about it?
I know, I know! I'll burn in hell one of these days.
lots of deaf people talk.
Deaf people DONT talk. Thats the whole point. They use the vibrating feature and texting. My friend who is deaf has one and his friends all have one.
Get an iPhone.
No everyone wants an iPhone. I post this from my iPod touch. =]
Why would I want this when I can get A FRICKEN LIIGHTSABER NOW FOR CRIPES SAKE?!
It looks really good with those specs. I would buy one.
It's a beast. Too little-too late
That thing is so ugly and dated. Notice in the specs-no touch? Same fisheye trackball that gets clogged with Potato Chip Salt.
You mean the same trackball that the BB's and G1's have?
Yes, the very same trackball that creates a customer service issue. At least the PRE tried to use a new piece of technology-a trackpad + touchscreen. This device will have the same boring OS and same boring non-features as ever. And for the money you could get a very nice iphone 3G
