Samsung Propel Pro in the wild, caught on camera
More spy shots from the net, eh? This latest set shows what's purported to be the Propel Pro, an update to Samsung's QWERTY that launched last October. There's a more streamlined interface under the screen, including a new optical joystick that according to Boy Genius Report's source is "worthless." The Windows Mobile 6.1 device also sports 3G and a camera of unknown quality, although we expect to at least match its 1.3-megapixel predecessor. Mum's the word on price and availability.

hmm... doesn't look too bad.
hopefully another cheap, solid Samsung with WinMo.
Sounds like a NAM version of the i620/i640, which is at least a year (if not more) old!
My friend has this phone and I hate it.
Hahaha, he's funny though.
Check out his YouTube channel.

Did you read the article? SPY SHOTS. NOT RELEASED YET. Smart one.
sounds like popel which means booger in german
I've always wanted a phone with windows 3.11.
Now that is interesting. A couple of things come to mind:
- Samsung is releasing a phone that really does not have a place in the ecosystem. This phone is essentially a Samsung Blackjack II, with a sliding form factor instead of the standard candybar. Now I know the BJ II is reaching end of life, but does it really make sense to release this Propel Pro while they're still pushing the BJ? I guess if you don't want a touchscreen WinMo 6.1 phone, then you could opt for this but...
- I've toyed around with the Samsung Epix (the touchscreen upgrade to the BJ II) and it is a pretty decent product. The optical mouse actually worked when I was using it, not sure if the BGR tester had one that was not calibrated or something. It's not really necessary when you have a touchscreen, but perhaps it facilitates one-handed usage?
- Does anyone else find it odd that they are calling it the "Propel Pro" but it is running winmo STANDARD? Wouldn't it make sense to load winmo Pro onto it? Poor choice of words, IMO. It would seem that perhaps they are trying to stay closer to BJ territory even though they are still selling the BJ. Looks like either way, they are cannibalizing BJ II sales or Epix sales.
I doubt we will see any competition.
This phone will more than likely not be coming out to the states. While we in the US got Black Jacks, in Europe they actually had the older version of this slider.
As far as Boy Genius's optical mouse comments, they make sense. I've toyed around with the Samsung Omnia, and while the touch pad provides dual functionality as mouse and as a touch dpad. Both functions are useless, obtuse, and just annoying to use. Give me a jog dial, and/or a physical clicking dpad any day. Both are much faster on a phone interface and much more suited to winmo usage.
yawn.....not interested in any new WinMo devices until 6.5 has a release date and upgrade guarantees from the OEMs.
Not sure why optical joysticks are suddenly all the rage. 4way pad wasn't broken, and trackballs (a la G1 and blackberrys) are pretty intuitive.
I agree, they are the worst innovation I have seen. Talk about a clumbsy adaptation for what seems to be soley aesthetic reasons. These new touch pads are soooooo painfully slow and annoying to use when compared to traditional dpads and jog dials. That's just another reason I don't want to switch from my Touch Cruise to any new winmo phones.
It has a portrait slide out keyboard, just like the PRE! Come on Engadget, give me a patent comparison like you did with iPhone and PRE?
Good thing MS cut back on windows mobile devices.....C"---....
Needs more Android.
Hey, but it looks like a Blackberry 8100, kinda...
T-Mobile Shadow
Anyone else thinks it looks like it? (Maybe that's cuz i got 1)
Meh......
Among other things, the Propel Pro also has GPS, stereo bluetooth, 3-megapixel camera and a 2.5-inch screen with 320x320 resolution. WinMo 6.1 runs fine on the phone. It's not blazing, but it hardly lags. The hardware itself looks beautiful , and I've always been a sucker for squarish, slider phones. However, the keyboard feels totally cramped, and the directional nub is feels cheap, so navigating with this phone isn't the most desirable thing in the world (no touchscreen).
I personally like the phone, share your opinions with us at http://www.Propel-Pro.com
why does everybody hate touchpads? I have had a samsung epix for 5 months now and i think the touchpad mouse is fantastic. i cannot imagine going back to a junk D-Pad after having used this. Maybe the touchpads on these other devices are not as good as the one on the epix or something?
