Sharp and Sony delay LCD joint venture, not that it matters
The global economic downturn and rising Yen have claimed another victim: the LCD partnership between Sony and Sharp. The joint venture to make and sell large LCD panels has now been pushed to March 2010 -- the same date that Sharp's new LCD factory in Sakai is still scheduled to open. So one way or another you'll be able to snag the next generation Sharp- or Sony-branded LCD television assuming, a) the companies survive, and b) you still have a job. What, too pessimistic?

wow, what a jerk
I hope Thomas loses his job.
I don't see any wrongdoing. You must have posted in the wrong place.
"I hope Thomas loses his job."
"Hope" is a bit mean, no? Anyway, who knows...apparently, it's not exactly all sunshine and rainbows over at Weblogs Inc. / AOL either at the moment...

Indeed.
I think they are trying to break the record for the highest number of ignorant, arrogant, and just plain dumb posts in a day: it's already the fourth today. Way to go, Engadget.
I guess he was just too pessimistic...
Sony LCD prices are unbelievable. Especially When they're no better than any other LCD manufacturer.
Unbelievably cheap you mean?
I got my 32" Bravia for £299 last month. A similar spec 32" Toshiba was going for £350.
Yeah that's down to the fact the economy is dying and every retailer have sales that started December and are still ongoing. I'm talking normal prices. They are far too expensive.
Does the MSRP even matter these days?
so if they merged would they then go by the name "Sharp-Nys" (would sound like "sharp knees")
My Sony 32" LCD cost $50 less than a comparable Sammy back in August '07. In June of last year, I got my Sony 52 incher for $200 less than the comparable Samsung unit.
Unless you're comparing Sony with a rock bottom brand like Vizio, I don't see how their prices are "unbelievable".
The lesson to learn from all of this... Only align your tv manufacturing with companies that start with the same letter. Sony, sharp and pioneer, panasonic.
"Only align your tv manufacturing with companies that start with the same letter. Sony, sharp and pioneer, panasonic."
You missed one.. Samsung. => Samsung, Sharp, Sony. Panasonic, Pioneer.
"so if they merged would they then go by the name "Sharp-Nys" (would sound like "sharp knees")"
I don't remember what the joint venture was going to be called, but had heard something along the lines of a variation of S-LCD Corp. (which is the name of the Samsung/Sony joint venture). Personally I'd prefer something a little more campy like SamSoap TV.... :)
