Bacteria returns with IntoPlay, the expectant looking portable PSone mod
We've seen plenty of semi-portable mashups from modder extraordinaire Bacteria, and now he's back with another luggable system that turns a PSone into a fully integrated handheld. The system is naturally made from a PSone console itself as well as a travel screen, a third-party controller, custom case, and, most importantly, a lot of skill and patience -- roughly 100 hours worth. You cay buy the tangible bits in a kit on eBay for £49.99 (about $70 US), then follow Bacteria's stupendously comprehensive instructions to build your own. Or, you can just watch the video below and live vicariously.

Joystick placement?
No thanks but nice job.
yes it is impressive.
GEE, 2 ANALOG STICKS?
Why would you need 2 ANALOG STICKS TO PLAY PS GAMES?
Sony seemed to feel that ONE was enough when they designed the PSP????
Wow.
Stuff a console in a bulky "portable" device.
Get on Engadget, where they will direct people to your Ebay auction.
Profit!
Really? Is this honestly that impressive anymore?
And I suppose you could recreate the Mona Lisa with nothing, but a pen clenched between your arse cheeks?
Wow.
So I have to be able to do Renaissance art in order to comment on how trite this whole stuff a game system in a distorted box genre is?
I also think crime dramas a lame too, however I've never produced a TV show. Is that a bad thing?
We get it. These guys can stuff a big game system into something small. NES, Atari, PS2.
Rumor has it there will be an attempt to put a PS3 into a small shell too, so build up that PayPal account now, kids!
@phonetic - is that a challenge? Haha
Agreed. Cramming some system's components into a NON-PORTABLE shell is hardly groundbreaking. If this thing was the size of a DS and ran ISO files, that would be something else. Otherwise, who the fuck wants to lug this thing around when they can game on a DS, a PSP, or even a laptop?
@ AVG
Just because it doesn't fit comfortably into your pant's pocket doesn't make it "non portable." You clearly don't like the device, but that doesn't mean you have to mislabel it.
@Serryl
Who decides what portable is, then? It's up to the individual. If "portable" means you can carry it, then I guess my desktop PC is portable. I like to think a "portable" game system should fit in a pocket.
Or you could, you know, buy a PSP and just play the PS1 rom files on that.
Or you could buy a Pandora and play PS1 games with 2 thumb sticks instead of the PSP's 1 thumb stick ;)
Or, you could pay for a Pandora and wait for months on end for it never to arrive. ;)
I thought it, but you said it before me.
"Or you could buy a Pandora and play PS1 games with 2 thumb sticks instead of the PSP's 1 thumb stick ;)"
PS1 didnt have any 'thumb sticks' or analog sticks for that point, also you can use the PSP analog stick instead of digital if you want.
What Pandora?
If he had put it in something shaped like a video game or movie character, he'd have gotten more press. For some reason, stuffing the guts of an old tech device into a plastic toy warrants being called a "mod" these days.
ben heck can do this while getting a root canal done
The PSone is powerful than PSP?
Yes, is so powerful.
Would have been smaller if a pico mtx mobo was used with a PS emulator.
Expecting comments like this!
Ok, to answer a few points:
Two joysticks are on all but the early versions of the Playstation controllers, and may games later used joysticks far better than by d-pad; some required the right joystick too (eg Ape Escape and others) - without both joysticks a system cannot run all the Playstation one games. Positioning - easy to use, just like an official controller is. bulky - depends what you mean - is it far less bulky than having to take a PSone console, portable screen attachment, power supply, controllers, wiring with you, as opposed to a unit like I made which is fully integrated and internal. Portable does not mean luggable, it means portable; this system is hendheld so entirely portable. Oh, yes, the usual PSP comments - an emulator is not proper hardware and does not run many games full speed, with proper sound and without graphic glitches; also hacking a PSP is not legal nor are many roms for it either - my system only uses official hardware so entirely legal. ZeroCorpse - read you comment again and reflect on how silly your post was! sqela - actually, my system is smaller and considerably more attractive than his PSone system - look at his pics on his site and compare to mine. broli - as above - emulators are not on the same playing field as proper hardware.
Hacking my PSP is one of the most worth it mods I have ever done, besides my original Xboxs. I can play Super Smash Bros. anywhere plus a lot of the homebrew is fairly entertaining. You can convert any PS1 game to it (as people have already said the controls aren't the greatest) and they all run at full speed looking way better than they ever did back in the day. legality isn't that big of an issue, as far as I know no one has ever been arrested over it plus it doesn't void your warranty if you install a Sony firmware before u send it in. In my opinion the benefits far out way any minimal risk.
USE A PSP TO DO IT! If you want two analog nubs then mod an extra one in.
This Bacteria guy obliviously has a lot of technical skill but little or no familiarity with the gaming world, why would you demo a Bugs Bunny game.
whats with all the negative comments. this is an extremely complex project that takes a lot of time and skill to complete.
the amount of publicity a project gets is Unfair. sometimes a simple 5-minute Mod get rave reviews, while projects that actually require skill get no publicity.
NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR "PSP". PSP's have to be unbricked, downgraded, and reprogrammed. and even then it wont emulate properly.
