Mission One electric motorcycle boasts 150 MPH top speed, extreme price tag
The Mission One EV electric sports bike got a proper unveiling at this week's Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference, and boy does this baby exude power. Mission Motors says the motorcycle's got an 150 MPH top speed and 100 foot-pounds of torque at any point between 0 and 6,500 RPM. That's a good deal faster than the Electric Motorsport GPR-S, which tops out at a now-paltry 100 MPH. The lithium-ion battery keeps it running for 150 miles, and charge time is targeted for under 2 Hours at 240V (8 Hours at 120V). Its stylish form factor comes from famed industrial designer Yves Behar. Yeah, we're excited, too, but here's the part where you flinch: the deathly silent super-scooter will first show up in 2010 with a 50-unit limited edition run costing $68,995 apiece. A more affordable model will be announced sometime this summer. If you've got a need for this much muted speed, be prepared to mortgage a house or two.

Just the thing for a recession-stricken world!
Yes... for all its 50 citizens
$68,995? GTFOOH!!!!
The recession-stricken allready know you only need $3k http://www.electricmotion.org/
For the extreme San Franciscan!
Stylish? I must be blind.
2 hour charge time? That seems really fast for a bike! 150 miles is 241 kilometres, seeing how nobody uses the imperial system...well, except for americans.
As well as the UK (the people who invented it). We seem to be the only countries still using it. Seems very fast to me as well.
Excuse me. In what stylistic universe is this not the gayest object in the world?

Doesn't beat iEye's comments.
That was the most irrevalent post you could have ever made ...nice
why is it refered to as a chopper? crotch rocket would be appropriate, chopper is just an insult to real ones.
OMG... I would die on that thing. I am not saying its necessarily a death trap for everyone... but I am definitely saying I would do some real stupid stuff with that kind of power.
With the position of those handlebars, you would have to almost rest your head on the large hump protruding from the midsection of it.
Design fail.
At 150mph, if your head is not tucked down on that hump, you will be pulled off the bike by the force of the air hitting you at that speed. Most super bikes are similar in geometry.
Uhm, not much into Sportbikes are ya AK66?
If it puts out that kind of power, and has that kind of range, what kind of range would a commuter version with more conservative gearing have?
well I think the better question is... what do you do with your feet at those speeds? glaring absence of footpegs.
Actually its not too bad. Now mind you I have not RIDDEN one yet
I have an 82 Goldwing and I love how I get to sit straight up on it. Very comfortable
I was also leery of this prone position but my buddy has an R1 and I sat on it (he is rebuilding it so not running yet and I do not consider myself skilled enough yet to try riding that beast) but I have to say it was NOT uncomfortable. your "gut" rests on the tank and provides quite a but of support. I was surprised how "easy" it felt. Now after an hour of riding I have no idea but initially I was surprosed.
Now I am a big boy 420 pounds 6'4" so that might skew things a bit.
I will be OK with top speed of 90 MPH and the same range of 150 miles, if it makes a price drop to around $20K.
Hope the "more affordable model" announced this summer will be just like that.
not doing 100mph + do you get that sort of economy .. still if it will do that speed noiselessly .. nice stealth transport .. an off-road variant for special forces??
It's always funny when non-riders comment on what the riding experience on a sportbike will be like.
"At 150mph, if your head is not tucked down on that hump, you will be pulled off the bike by the force of the air hitting you at that speed. Most super bikes are similar in geometry. "
Seriously where do you come up with this stuff?
Have you gone 150 sitting upright? Don't most super bikes have a similar geometry? What's wrong with my logic?
I have gone 150mph on a bike and it's not that big of a deal. Uncomfortable perhaps, but nowhere near ripping you off the bike. Hell, just look at MotoGP riders. They go 200mph and then sit upright at the end of the straight to use their bodies as an airbrake.
I thought the whole point of a sports bike was to make loud noise...
Yikes, they put a full can of ugly in that one.
With that super price does it come with an umbrella for if rain starts to fall.
yeah just what the world needs bikes we cant hear. well i guess more people will die riding these. when people are stupid and are showing off we cant hear them in our cars and we will run them over.
people don't hear bikes over their cell phones, expensive blasting stereo systems, and the car's own engine anyway. loud bikes just piss people off, making them even more distracted from diving. loud bikes are stupid.
What a waste of money. A Kawasaki Ninja 250 gets 61MPG, tops out at about 110, and only costs $4,000, and that's only a starter 250cc engine motorcycle. Who the fuck would pay $68,995 for a motorcycle, even if it is an electric one.
And where's the fun if it has a quiet electric motor?
The whole point of a bike is for it to go BRRRRRRMMMM really loudly and vibrate between your legs. Maybe they can install some powerful speakers that simulate this.
Wow none of you are any type of motorcycle enthusiast, your head would be where it would on any other bike... your arms should be longer than your neck... the only thing that needs to be changed is the under tail, the little bumps are not kool. You cannot get 100+mpg on a bike that will even do 100+ mph, vespa yea maybe, but imo you are all motorcycle ignorant.
....This is a gadget blog. Why do you expect us to be motorcycle enthusiasts?
You probably won't get pulled of the bike, but doing 150MPH with that little cover, will be fun for five minutes. Then your arms and shoulders will beg you for a train ticket.
Damn, it's the ugliest bike I've seen in a while.
erm where do you put your feet? at 150mph i find that if theyre dragging on the floor it might make the ride less enjoyable (than it already would be)
I would guess your feet go on the pegs, like any other motorcycle.
yeah... take another look at that picture chief.
you are all idiots and apparently do not ride. the bike is fine the way its built, you can do 150mph and not get ripped off the bike its about 160 when u have to worry about that. only thing that needs to change is the under tail. Oh its built much like a moto gp bike
The title should read: ".. boasts 150 MPH top speed, extreme price tag, extreme design"
Seriously, at first sight I thought that was made out of wood!
An idiot who has lots of money stupid to the bone and wants to die young.
I could see this having a decent following here in the States...people got all psyched up over the Prius, and THAT is an ugly SOB. This looks a helluva lot better. And no, you don't need to tuck down lest you get pulled off the bike...although it does help in relieving stress off of your shoulders....
I'd hate to try cross the street on crutches wearing headphones in the neighborhood of anybody who owns this.
Crosswalk boxes should have radar screens.
didn't your parents teach you to look both ways before crossing the street?
Why does everything electric have to look so stupid??!???!?
Imagine an electric car that looked exactly like a Shelby Mustang! People might actually buy that...
Why does new technology have to look exactly the same as old technology??!??!?
This looks great. I'm sure they could make one that looks like every other motorbike but you don't pay $70k for something that looks like every other motorbike. Boring designs will probably come later, after the sensible price tag.
grammar pedant note: article uses "it's" instead of "its" :(
Riding on a dead silent motorcycle will get you killed in no time.
Hey dill.....the pegs are at the front of the swingarm below the mono-shock.
thank you! i thought i was the only one who saw that!
I think this bike looks great, but I'm surprised Engadget didn't mention the sweet display and wireless tuning. I want to tune my bike from my iPhone! One of my other feeds, Fast Company, showed it. Here's what I'm most excited about:
"Real Time Data Acquisition
The Mission One's data acquisition feature allows riders to capture ride data in real time. Riders can record ride data, such as speed, location, or lean angle; or bike data, such as motor current, battery voltage, or efficiency. Riders can take that data to their computer to analyze their performance, brag to other riders, or prepare for their next ride.
Wireless Enabled
The Mission One is the first wireless enabled motorcycle. It introduces riders to a new way of connecting to their motorcycle. When going to work on their bike, a Mission One rider will take a computer more often than a wrench. Riders will be able to download ride data, check bike status, and update bike settings in a matter of seconds through a seamless user interface. "
...i want it...
