Italian industrial firm Tazzari has announced preliminary specs and launched a new website for its plug-in auto, the Zero. Measuring 113.5 inches long and sporting 15-inch wheels, the city-bound electric car weighs in at 1,200 pounds -- 312 of that from the lithium-ion Fe battery. It'll handle 88 miles with a full charge that takes 9 hours to fill, but you can reportedly juice up to 80% in just 50 minutes. Top speed is 56 MPH, so don't expect to be driving this on the highway, and it can go from 0 to 31 in under 5 seconds. The company says it's due out later this year in Europe and the Carribean for less than 20,000 Euros ($25,760), and yes, there's a dozen Crayola-inspired colors available. Hit up the official site for a trailer.

Will ZZ Top sue them over the logo?
I'm Bad. I'm Nationwide*.
* Provided you come from Luxumburg.
More like, "will someone sue them over the fact that the Zero can't drive in dunes?".
Badly simulated dunes, at that.
It can talk too:

ZZ Top?
If this thing runs out of electricity ... you've got legs, you know how to use them.
Think of the money you'll save on condoms!
haha, I peed a little when I read that.
...
You won't be burning any kind of rubber in that thing.
I think you can wear it like a condom.
I don't know about that. 0-31 in 5 seconds is better than most of the cars us here on engadget have.
and $27,000 is getting close to affordable. Cut the price in half and you would have a winner.
if 88miles is ACCURATE ie a reliable range thats more than enough for me and 9 hours charge is just fine by me my work shift is 11+ hours so it will be fully charged for my 54 mile drive home.
the $27k is still too high but its getting there. Shove a NIMH pack in it and you can increase the range beyond 100miles and cut the price in half.
the speed is also MORE than sufficient for me.
the max speed for my ENTIRE route to work is 50mph with one stretch at 55mph for 4.5 miles but I usually do 50 there too just to save fuel.
this car could save me $3500 in fuel every single year. making the car FREE in about 9 or 10 years with interest.
alas thats too long but only because I know in 5 or 6 years we will start seeing some affordable electrics.
although it still a good deal (IF it can carry 3 people) I would not be able to afford the monthly payment and also do not trust the lithium battery.
I hope that at least the inside is real Italian leather..
yeaaaa i would definitively buy it then!!
I don't approve of killing Italians for their leather.
They need to have these as rentals in the city..
they need to say how many kilowatt hours you'll use "filling up that tank". It would be nice to know how many cents per mile these electric cars cost to drive.
You can bet the $/km will be much much less than gas. Beyond that, you've got a point.
Well Chevy indicated the volt's battery takes about $5 of electricity to charge, and runs for 200 miles...so 2 1/2 cents a mile.
Gas is what $1.80 right now ? Assume your car does 25mpg, pretty good standard, that would mean you are paying 7 cents a mile for gas...
@alexhrose71
25mpg is a good standard? Since when the 80's?
The Ford Model T got 25 MPG... it's sad that right now the average car on the road (in the US) gets less than 20 MPG... where are we going wrong?
http://www.wanttoknow.info/030604detroitnewsepaaveragempg.htm
Hmm $2.50 per 100 miles is actually pretty good for lithium packs (they use about 1.5 to 2 times more power than a NIMH pack because of "cooling" requirements)
And remember if you add some solar panels to your roof once Nano Solar starts selling 90cent a watt panels it will only cost you $2600 to add a Grid Tie in ($1600) and a solar array ($1000) Now you can't CHARGE the car via solar but you can sell that electricity back to the grid and "offset" the power you use to charge this car 100% ie its FREE to drive even of electricity costs.
Well ok for this car you would need at $1500 array so $3100 total (lithium uses more power so you need a larger array to offset the power)
Still a great deal if you can afford the payments.
Actually comparing to the 90's is a bad idea since 35 40 50mpg was NOT uncommon in that era :-)
really gives you a new insight on today's cars ehh :-)
DOLT 90's should be 80's though we also had them in the early 90's as well.
wow this thing would blow off the road if you drove it in wind. That and it doesnt go anywhere near fast enough for me, lol. 26, alot of money for this little thing
well if you have enough cash .. Shelby will do you a nice 200mph (320kph) electric supercar ..

:)
So it's like... an enclosed electric scooter? With a little more cargo space?
last time I checked, the speed limit on highways is 55 mph. 56 seems like it might be more than that, allowing for highway travel.
HOOOHAH!
No logo says "fast" quite like the "Zz" logo.
ZzZzZz....
The name ZERO comes from the survivability ratings.
Sweet Looking Car I Could See My Self Driving This Thing
These guys sure are a bunch of PhotoShop masters, that's for sure!
Have you ever driven a vehicle before? Most people drive 65 in a 55, and even if they did go 55, you'd need to be able to go faster than that to merge/change lanes.
I never understood how something could charge 80% very quickly, but then take several hours to charge the remaining 20%.
@ Phylop
No you don't. You should not drive faster then the speed limit to change lanes or to merge into a highway. As long as you can travel at the minimum required speed (in a 55mph highway it should be around 45mph) you may use the highways.
Are you that guy that is constantly tailgating me on the highways?
It's like a Mini Cooper with more mini and less cooper.
0 to 31 mph, where did they come up with that range, it's not even metric :)
It might do 0 - 11 in under 3 seconds!
I believe 0-62 mph is a common performance measurement at least in parts of European countries that use mph. I guess they just halved it to make it 0-31?
Plus, I think 100 kph is a common highway speed limit, which is roughly 62 mph.
Ok, that is one ugly ass vehicle....
That looks like a cross between an original Mini Cooper, and my Suzuki Vitara.
And that's awesome.
So where do you put your date ?? Must she run along the car.!!
Looks like a great little car for use in the city. Perfect for driving to/from work.
