WiiGator GameCube launcher promises to play "backups" sans modchip

Details are pretty light on this one at the moment, but a couple of videos have cropped up in recent days demoing the as yet unreleased WiiGator GameCube Backup Launcher, which promises to let folks play GameCube "backup" copies on their Wii without a modchip. Judging from the video available after the break, everything sure does appear to work as advertised, although we'll obviously have to wait for it to be released into the wild to know for sure. In the meantime, you can also check out another, blurrier video by hitting up the read link below.

I know this is pretty nice and sweet, but isn't piracy a bad thing?
Hypocrisy is worse.
Bad isn't necessarily the same thing as ethically wrong.
When I pirate games I have fun and save money. I consider that a good thing, but ethically wrong.
Not when you can go to Gamestop, look in the manual for a key, activate it steam and voila. I did that with UT3 and it worked. It didn't work with COD WAW though
@Game_playa
Words cannot describe how much I resent you. People like you made my job so unbearably difficult. Do you know how often we have to go through the boxes and make sure that they aren't open? I get an irate customer calling me up or storming in the place every day complaining that their activation key isn't working.
Go pirate a fucking cracked version if you're going to do it, but don't take someone else's key.
Duh. I just look in the DISPLAY boxes that are ALREADY open. You guys put manuals in there to make it seem real, I just take advantage of that
Couldn't this be locked out with a firmware update?
and also, whats with these guys the knowledge and know how to do these kind of hacks but only happen to have a cell phone camera,( un steady by the way) when theyre recording this?
Yes. But unfortunately, Nintendo is too slow and arrogant to do a thing about it. One of the prominent Wii hackers even tried to warn them of a patchable security hole that could be used to load backups without a chip - and was ignored completely. Now they're paying the price.
But is it region free? I already have a ton of legally purchased GC and Wii games region 1, but there are a few Japanese games that I want that are a bit harder to get.
According to the internets, there is a region changer / unlocker app available on the homebrew channel.
Where was this 4 years ago??
This has been out for a while now. You can load a game from the home screen too. It's pretty easy to do as well.
For Wii games... yes? Not for GC games yet.
I guess Nintendo is just too happy from it's Wii's sales worldwide that they don't need to act so quick against piracy.
I need this desperately, anyone else that has used the SD gecko method knows what I'm talking about
Finally... I hope it's updated for wii backups as well, it's still not perfect.
WiiGator currently works very well at loading GameCube ISOs off DVD-Rs.
Two cautions, though:
1) Read speed is limited to 3x, so games will load significantly slower than retail games
2) The Wii cannot read DVD+R unless you set the book-type to DVD-ROM when you burn it. This requires hacked firmwares for some DVD burners (I required one for my laptops' burner), and some sort of program to change the bit setting (Nero can do some, I needed a commandline Linux app being a Linux user).
Other than that, it works great. I'd rather be able to load ISOs off an SD card, but meh, it works.
Now, being able to load gamecube games will be nice :)
