David Reeves drops hint of Sony's shift to 45nm PS3s
It's no secret that Sony has been eyeing a shift to 45nm Cell processors in the PS3 sooner or later, but the always talkative David Reeves (Sony Europe's president) has now finally dropped a bit more specificity on the matter, while naturally still leaving the company quite a bit of wiggle room. Speaking to The Guardian newspaper, Reeves said that Sony is "always looking at ways to reduce costs," and that one of those measures is "replacing the current 65 nanometer Cell chip with a 45 nanometer one probably in middle of year." Reeves also expectedly talked up the PS3's multimedia capabilities, which he says will help the PS3 compete better with the Xbox 360 in the short term without the need for drastic price cuts, although he doesn't seem to complete rule out the notion of some increased affordability before the end of the year, saying "it will make progress" in that direction, no doubt with the aid of that aforementioned 45nm Cell processor.[Thanks, Khattab]

Of which most arguably look better on the 360.
What's the difference between the two? Just performance-wise I'm guessing...?
I'm very happy with my PS3 and it's functionality. But then I didn't buy it solely for gaming.
If they want to make it more interesting for multimedia, then please make sure more codec's are supported and ofcourse the MKV container.. a lot of trailers on the net are encoded with WMA9+ audiotracks which the PS3 can't play yet, so you only get video but no sound.. also it would be nice to have quicktime support..

"By end of the year"!?! Ahh man.... So, should I wait to buy a PS3, or just give in and get it now.
I am sorta in the same boat as you. What do you think a PS3 is worth? u might say AU$500 (American like $280 maybe, not sure) i reckon the next price drop should be, well if ps3's costs about AU$670 right now, then it could cost around $480 - $540. That is my opinion therefore i will wait, say i wanted the PS3 at $300 or something well that's just not ethical so i would just say screw it i will work a few more hours and just buy it for what it is now.
If i had a 1080P tv on the other hand well then id say PS3 at $700.
There is really no noticible difference to teh consumer, if you really cant hold out. Buy one now, i dont suspect a price cut any time soon anyway,
A 45nm chip isn't going to help the PS3 at all to sell. There isn't anything to actually make the switch worth going out and buying one if you haven't already bought one. The people who haven't bought a PS3 yet don't give a rat's ass about what size chip is in the thing.
Too bad he's not Steve Ballmer
