Samsung Memoir officially brings 8 megapixels to T-Mobile
At some point, T-Mobile decided it wanted to play in the megapixel big leagues by rolling out the Motorola ZN5 and Samsung Behold, but why stop at a measly little 5 megapixels? The long-rumored t929 Memoir from Samsung has now been officially announced for T-Mobile USA's funky 3G bands, featuring a full touchscreen, TouchWiz user interface, integrated AGPS, full HTML browser, and -- of course -- that glorious 8 megapixel sensor with xenon flash. No word on pricing or availability just yet, but we're told we can expect it some time this month.

Full-face touchscreen, GPS, 3G, an 8MP camera with (assumingly) xenon flash.
Can't wait to see that battery life.
Battery life, take five pictures with flash, plug it in.... Really though, the phone looks pretty thick so hopefully it has a big battery.
@ derX
Yes, it has a Xenon flash.
I guess the mega pixel wars for cell phones is about to begin. 1...2....3....Fight
That was unexpecting.
Too bad they did not deploy android on this. Otherwise it is nice to see some USA phones that have 8MP Most other phones that compete you have to import.
Looks nice. Too bad I'm ATT.
Memoir, Renoir? Coincidence? I think not.
To bad TouchWiz is more annoying then useful most of the time. Third party widgets PLEASE!
This will probably be my next upgrade if I don't move to the iPhone. And plus, I'm sure an Android hack will arise soon enough.
And how many dumbphones have gotten Andriod so far? That's right, zero. There won't be a port of Android for this device. If it was ever going to be ported to a dumbphone, it would probably be the iPhone and that hasn't happened yet.
Meh. It sounds good on paper but it'll probably be underwhelming. The full html browser on the Behold is a mess.
Its nice and im really happy that us Americans get a 8MP phone around the same time as Euroland, but what i want to see is if phones like this could run a smartphone os because these are feature phones that carriers then forget about and never update and thus after 2 months becomes worthless
just my 2¢
this is exactly what i need!
More of the same.
8MP camera on a tiny ass sensor, oh boy.
They make ass sensors?

If only this were the Innov8 rather than this memoir that seems to me to be the T-mobile version of the Pixon for at&t. Bring me the innov8 with the funky 3G PLEASE!!
Looks promising, but all that promise will evaporate if -- as that last photo in the gallery suggests -- it has Samsung's usual proprietary headphone connection instead of a standard 3.5mm. That's a deal-breaker.
Is it just me, or other than the iPhone and a few Blackberry models, AT&T really doesn't seem to have much in the way of the new hot stuff?
Nope, AT&T is all about the iPhone right now, unfortunately.
They're gonna lose me as a customer pretty quick, though, if their competitors are putting stuff like this out there while AT&T has all their eggs in one basket that I couldn't care less about.
@shrugg
First of all, stop typing. You're stupid is showing.
Second of all, this isn't a competitor to the iPhone. This is Camera + Phone. It isn't a smartphone, nor is it competing for that place in people's minds. Some people don't need a lot of functionality from their phone, but like to take a lot of pictures. It's very easy to define the market for this phone.
Personally, if I were buying a phone like this, I'd make sure that the camera capabilities are showing. I've seen phones with 5MP cameras be an absolute waste of time as a camera because of ridiculous shutter delay (and other camera-y stuff that I don't know). Let's hope Samsung did this right, and didn't just up the megapixel count.
Well Well Finally the states is trying to catch up with the rest of the World. Being a American living in Europe for now(I go back and forth between Chicago and Germany)I have to say the phones and the contracts with them really suck in the states. I mean really we can get Iphones for 1euro here and now with pre-paid plans. So this is a nice phone but it is still way behind the curve. To the comment of we have finally got a 8 meg phone in the states at the same time as Euroland is funny they have had these phones since early last year. Good thing is that T-mobile is pushing the update American bid since At&t is suckin butt as usual. I am waiting for the LG KM900 Arena(12meg camera, Divx support, 120FPS record yea full touch yea)or the New Toshiba TG01 which is about the size of the HTC Touch HD the only problem I have with these phones is the Win Mo not my favorite OS but there seems to be some major improvements coming down the pipe line. Will be in Barcelona at MWC to see what is up. All in the all this is a decent phone it is at the bottom of Samsungs phone rung but not bad for everyday snap and shoot.
Is Samsung trying to capitalize on the Renoir's success by naming this Memoir?
U meant Menoir rather? :P
LG chose to name their phone after Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a 19th-Centry Impressionist painter, to highlight the artistic and impressionistic UI and handset Design.
Samsung chose to name THEIR phone after the term for a reflective written peice, which in turn is derived from French and eventually Latin, to mean MEMORY. As in: The memories you will capture with the camera which is the main selling point of this phone.
Someone really fell for their marketing BS.
What?
"You're stupid is showing."
Nice...
Obvious troll is obvious.
What a Viewty rip-off.
BTW how do you pronounce this? Memowhaaa?
If you can't pronounce Memoir, then you're not the demographic this phone is aimed at. I.e: People with a basic intelligence.
God, is it so hard to understand a joke? I was talking about that guy in the video for the Renoir. "Renowhaa".
What a SE C905 rip off ?!
Repeat ad nauseum: above 3 megapixels = meaningless.
Duh.
wow, actually looks like "a camera that can make phone calls" rather than the other way around.
Memoir makes it's debut on Feb25!!!!!!!!!
I just upgraded to a Motorola ZINE (ZN5) and got the phone yesterday. I was a little bummed to read this, since my main consideration was a decent camera on the phone for snapshots. But then again, more megapixels do not necessarily a better camera make, and I like the great battery life of my new Z5 and some other features like Wi-Fi. Besides, I still have a real camera for proper picture taking, after all.
I'm a TMobile employee and can tell you this phone comes out the 25th of this month.
I'm still an ATT customer using an iPhone 3G because I haven't found anything with any carrier that can beat it yet.
But let me say, this is definately the closest rival to the iphone.
No multi-touch display, but that's not a necessity.
You can flick through your photo albums the same way as with the iPhone with one finger.
The full HTML browser works decently well, and you can also browse in WAP (mobile) mode.
The camera is amazing, both video and still-pictures.
My only complaint (being an iPhone user) is that text messaging is still displayed as an individual message.
With iPhone, its displayed "IM" style, or conversation-style. Because I do a lot of messaging, I really wish the Memoir had that feature.
Otherwise, its a great phone. I've played with it for about a week now and can honestly tell you its a sweet little device.
Look for full retail pricing to be around $399. No word yet to us as employees what the discounted price will be with contract renewal.
