LG Arena KM900 press photo leaked... by LG
Guess LG UK apparently can't wait to show the world the new Arena KM900 -- it's published a high-quality press photo on its corporate blog ten days before the official reveal at MWC. This is also our first glimpse of that "S-Class 3D interface," and it's... definitely a spinning 3D cube with some icons on it. No further confirmation on those details we'd heard, but we'll see if this thing is more than just another touchscreen dumbphone wannabe when we get our hands on it.

who are they kiding
Yes those swines it's not like their Prada phone was out before the iPhone.
I'm sure that the three people who actually bought a Prada before the iPhone came out are thrilled.
@ieye
the funniest part is, you don't know what 4g is.
Without looking it up, of course. Too bad AT&T won't have it for quite a while.
inb4iphone
Doesn't the iPhone look like an LG Prada though ?
*ZING*
downranked
Just to let you know, iEye:
http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/March07/4460.htm
So yeah, what was it that you said again?
@Saad
the iPhone didn't qualify for the 2007 awards because of its release data, but took the 'best of the best' award the following year (http://en.red-dot.org/2785+M5efb178ab01.html). Prototypes can only be considered for an award if they are going to be released before a certain date (this year it's July 1st 2009).
Stop your trolling. You're just as bad as iEye.
It's a cross between the iPhone and the original TouchFLO
No, it's a cross between the LG Prada and TF3D.
http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/March07/4460.htm
"The PRADA Phone by LG (LG-KE850), the world's first full touch screen interfacephone and winner of red dot's 'Best of the Best' award was co-developed by mobile communications leader LG Electronics and famed design house PRADA."
Apple copied LG.
nope, it's a cross of Nokia + iPhone + TouchFlo
prada? the b/w icons? good luck trying!
Icons have been around for decades now.
This has the physical look of the LG Prada, which Apple ripped off.
You were saying again?
@ Hamidxa,
i would say that Arena resembles Omnia pretty much. so looks like it's an Omnia ripoff.
@Hamidxa
No, it doesn't.
I was talking purely about the interface. The spinning cube looks like the oringinal TouchFLO, and the icons DEFINITELY look like the iPhones. The ones on the right cube are pretty close looking.
I agree, however, that the iPhone looked a LOT like the prada.
Of course Apple ripped off LG. Never mind the fact that the two launches were so close together they had to have been working on them at the same time. Never mind that Apple had been heavily rumoured to be working on exactly this widescreen touch phone device for years before LG.
They were both working on it at the same time, LG just managed to announce their product a month earlier. The iPhone wasn't the first touch screen phone, just as the iPod wasn't the first MP3 player. But the iPhone (just like the iPod) was the first to get it right.
A 3D spinning cube? Beryl, anyone?
So that means no one can use 3D cube anymore.
What does open source mean again ?
"S-Class 3D interface"?
*wow, i thought it's a car*
We get it. All the devices shown at the WMC will be touchscreen phones showing smooth 3D interfaces...
But you have to admit that this is going to be the most WMC ever because of all of these announcements.
No question about that. This WMC will be fantastic.
1) Tegra phones
2) Android phones
3) Snapdragon phones
4) Palm Pre GSM
5) And last, AND LEAST, WinMo 6.5
That alone would make it the best event in many years. I suspect any phone will top Tegra or the Pre.... if a phone does do that, I hope it's an Android.
Dont forget this iPhone Nano the engadget editors have been dying for.
It won't be the best WMC ever because it's not called that.
it does look kind of cool like if an iphone raped a shine, still cool though
of course the iphone couldn't make it consentual
CompizPhone?
I love you LG
If I see that iPhone-esque (I'm sure someone else did it first, but this is what it's most commonly associated with) icon bar at the bottom of ONE more phone's UI, I will scream so loud that...that...I dunno, I'll just scream.
Ya, the LG PRADA used it and that was shown before the iPhone. Who cares! Phone manufacturers will continue to copy and make slight revisions based on competitors ideas. If it works why not? It's how it will always be. Sure there will be some insanely different ideas, but they don't always work either. Look at laptops, they are all very similar in terms of keyboard and screen placement because it works. Of course there are differences in each one but they follow the same basic design because it works.
Yes I'm pretty sure Apple invented and patented a row of icons along the bottom of a screen.....< obviously >
No, You mean LG Prada'sh.

As it happens, LG are known for industrial espionage. I used to do internal comms events for Orange, in which Orange staff would be shown the next seasons' phones.
So, as Nokia showed off what they had coming up, Sony Ericsson, LG and Samsung presenters had to be kept out of the room.
LG did a scooby doo trick and dressed up as Orange store managers. Someone notices (how, I don't know) and we had to kick them out.
@ spencereholtaway
Yes, just like Apple and a lot of companies (Xerox anyone...)
if you can set it up so that when you switch to different sides of the cube it makes the scrolling sound the zelda 64 menus made, i'm sold
This looks like a cross between HTC's TouchFLO 3D UI and Apple's Touch UI
anybody else not really believe that they will go through with the UI???? I mean like change it up so it doesnt really really copy the iphone. I understand that some similarity will be ok, but is all that stuff they have in their legal.
Watz illegal about this phone?
word on the street is that Apple copied the LG KE850 when they made their iphone.
even if the interface is changed, the device itself resembles the Samsung Omnia. to me it's still a KIRF.
@required,
never heard of that. you got a source other then the street?
@bjay,
come on dude. the UI is blatantly similiar to the iphone. i am wondering if they can actually put out a phone with a UI like that.
Except it isn't easy to proove UI copyright infringement. I believe the term is 'virtual identity'. That is they both have to do the exact same things when you break them down into their sub blocks.
The iPhone UI is blatantly similar to Hildon, S60, etc. UIs evolve over time. People need to stop trying to pretend like they have to be starkly different because in effect, everyone copies from everyone else.
Thanks Shyam, I need not say more
3d spinning interface ? Can anyone say HTC Touch ? So lets see, we have an iphone , and HTC put in one. I cant wait to see whats next coming out of your refrigerator LG !
LG has a good sense of design, but the quality of their phones is abysmal. My LG Chocolate was beautiful until about five minutes after I got it because it was as scratch prone as my iPod, the metal on the camera rusted, the slider fell apart within weeks, the touch buttons faded to black, the paint chipped off, and the keypad turned to gum. LG does not think about everyday usage when it comes to phones. Samsung phones are built like tanks.
Tight
@shyam D,
I think people dont pretend, it is just that they dont know.
Hence my questions.
I think you shouldnt pretend that everyone knows everything about UI copyright infringement. Thanks for the info though. I should have thought about that when engadget compared the pre and iphone
There's no getting around copycat iPhones like this now that the design has become popular. It's too plain and obvious for it not to be copied. It's like old telephones. A long time ago one phone came out with buttons instead of a dial. The slew of few phones after it were of course copycats, but who can blame them since the design is such a natural evolution.
I for one hope some phones keep tactile buttons. I like touchscreens just fine, but it's not the same as having real buttons (hence all the iPhones with keyboards we keep seeing). I would rather have an ugly phone that was a breeze to use than a beautiful phone that was a pain.
Rolleyes.
Apple copied LG/Prada, not the other way around.
Get your facts straight.

compare KM900 with this:

and this,

which icon scheme it resembles the most? ok u will still say the one with black and white icons rite?
either way, i would say that the LG Arena design is a ripoff of Samsung Omnia. they both look pretty similar,
http://www.gadgettastic.com/wp-content/2008/08/samsung-omnia.jpg
i can't see any reason why u wouldn't agree with it.
btw, Android FTW!
