Archos to release Android phone / tablet
We're guessing we'll hear more about this at MWC, but TI just let loose a press release crowing about Archos's use of the OMAP3 processor in an upcoming "Internet Media Tablet" that runs on Android and also doubles as a phone. No pictures yet, but the spec sheet makes it sound like a hotrodded Archos 5: five-inch screen, up to a 500GB hard drive, a battery capable of 7 seven hours of video playback, and Flash support, all in a package just 10mm (.39 inches) thick. The underlying OS will be Android, but Archos plans to really beef up the media features -- there's even mention of HD video playback. That sounds seriously sweet -- if Archos ditches the current mushy resistive screen in the 5 for a capacitive unit, this could be a knockout Android device when it launches in the third quarter.

this is the ultimate ipod touch killllaaaaaaaa
It is so kewlllllllllllll !!!!!!
This is the same clown (charbax) that wants us to take his word
@ trans6am
Finally saw the video / pic of the so called CHARBAX clown and d-bag. French man yes? with a pointed nose shoe? well balding here.
This guy has to be the most 'tard person ever trying to advertise for a company. He has to be directly related to the owner in addition to owing some stocks... He must have a car made by Archos personalized with his name CHARBAX
So which is it?
9:11 or 2:47 PM?
If it is anything like the first 5..... who the hell knows. It took Archos -- are you ready for this -- FIVE FIRMWARE UPDATES to fix the fact that the clock wouldn't keep time. It would lose 1-2 minutes AN HOUR. Five firmware updates to fix something a $0.59 Sieko can do.
Testing.
Wow, didn't know so many people really hated the Archos 5.
I've used my Archos every single day for the past few months. Besides scratching it up a bit on the back from keeping it in the same pocket as my keys, it's in good condition. Some websites make it crap out and restart inexplicably, but besides that I browse for quite a bit at a time without any problems. It has the battery life to watch several movies in a row on those long trips, and listen to music all day. Subtitles on it read clearly as well(if that matters to anyone besides me)
For having a hard drive with moving parts, it's also amazingly resistant to damage. I've dropped it and bumped it around quite a bit with no problems.
But I guess that's just me. I like my Archos. Sure it has some problems, but none that'd make me go blow a few hundred dollars on an iPod with a smaller screen and less capacity.
How is your HD plug-in? How is your GPS? You having fun watching videos your recorded with the $100 extra DVR dock, that have the audio and video out of synch? How much fun is it having only half of your music library because the 5 refuses to acknowledge the other half? I love hitting the same link 1,000,000 times because the touch detect is so horrible that it can't figure out what you are hitting. I have only had to reformat mine twice because of the system crash notice. Should I go on?
You haven't dropped it enough... Try mistaking dropping it on a hard surface with the LCD facing up even with the unit enclosed in the case. What you get thereafter is a thunderstorm screen with inks all over it...or multi color once you see push through the cracked resistive screen.
The LCD is so fragile, you can't even imagine. I've never expressed my frustration over any device in the past. I've owned lots of devices, notebooks, and even fix some of my gadgets myself...but this one is 1 giant JUNK
Nobody hates Archos other than the people working for the competition. Notice all negative posts in this thread are by the same couple of trolls named Jimmy Trans.
So basically you're both saying :
-Software sucks we have nothing this can't play shit AND hardware sucks very fragile etc etc ..
If I compile all the downsides you've been enumerating I guess I'll end up with the WORST thing ever..
Still I own a Archos 5 60Gb and it's pretty neat, really. And most of the press does think the same as me.
You're complaining about the GPS ? it's was NEVER said it would even exist one day ! they said MAYBE we will make a add-on, a GPS-module.
So what exactly are you complaining about ?
Do you know any PMP/MIT that does provide a GPS ?
So shut it dude.
Oh and the HD plug-in is the same... How much do you like knowing FOR SURE you're NEVER EVER EVER gonna get it on your iPod ?
Ok 1 more comment to sum up my frustration. After all the headache I've gone thru so far, It's like I paid $400+ for root canal when I was already promised a steak dinner.....
Next time, try not falling down 8 stairs on your head and blaming the mp3 player company for a broken device.
We work for the competition??? It has already ben proven that you have your life savings in Archos stock. That it is why when anyone complains about the 10000 glitches on your forum, you delete them. Try explaining why Archos hasnt issued a recall for the metallic pant coming off. Or why they still havent fixed the DVR video/audio synche issues. Where is our HD plug in. Where is or GPS support? Lets here your typical BS excuses.
Awnser the questions already, little man.
At least he isn't a site admin here and he can't hide the negative posts :-) I'm sure he wished his name was Charbax Block rather....
Careful what you wish for Mr. as making fun of others can surely back fire on you when you least expected.
Dude cut the crap the HD plug-in and the GPS are not part of the Archos 5 !
They are add-ons !
And NOT realeased yet so WHAT ? did you pay for them ? NO !
ok, _that_ is the phone ive been waiting for! omg, how i love archos...that will probably be the first phone with good sound quality.
i want
ACK.
Why is everyone so obsessed with capacative screens? Okay, so they're SLIGHTLY more responsive, and they can have multitouch. But that's where the advantages end.
With a resistive screen, you can be more presice in where you tap, you can keep your fingers on screen without worrying about pressing something accidentally, and you can use something other than your fat thumb to select things.
Typing on an iPhone/Touch keyboard is next to impossible for me; Touch, lift, touch, lift, touch, lift, touch lift. It hurts my thumbs and severely reduces my typing speed.
this is too good to be true, it is everything i want: a device with a big touchscreen that still fits in my pocket and allows me to browse the we with a good os.
here are my doubts:
1. archos has never before been very open with their linux os, this is a big step for them
2. this will cost a lot of money and be locked to a single carrier
3. it will not come out when it is announced
1. yeah
3. yeah.........
2. I'm not sure about that. Here is the hint : For a long time people have been complaining about not having .ogg and .flac support on archos devices, when they were free, then one day some people started to send messages to the costumer support about this .ogg and .flac.
and on Gen6 we finally got it.
Archos is such a small company compared to Apple for exemple that the feedback of the users can really influence their decision.
Make a facebook group :)
looks sick, its kinda big for a phone though, maybe a 3 inch version too?
You call that a phone? It's too big. I bet it won't fit any pocket. Just call it a tablet and not a phone. It's just too big to be a phone. You wouldn't want to stick that thing to your head, would you? Would've been really nice if it were an inch or 2 smaller.
*sigh*
So much for thinking that I'll be replacing my phone soon.
** correction:
I bet it won't fit in any pocket
My Bold doesn't fit in my jeans pocket either.
and your iPhone would be destroyed in a week if it was in my pocket.
But then it does fit in my jackets inner pocket and funny enough that's exactly where I want it to be.
CHARBAX ..... answer the questions already. What happened to the HD support for the 5 (that a ton of us already paid for)? What happened to the HD support for the 605 that was promised? Why didn't they issue a recall with the "metallic" paint falling off of all our 5's? How come they still haven't fixed the video/audio synch issues with the DVR? How come there is no TV snap on, that we were promised? How come they originally said that the GPS dock was compatible with the 5, then after everyone started bitching that it wasn't, they removed it from the web site and changed it to "coming soon"? How come after 5 firmware updates, you still can't see half of your music library? Where the hell is the 3g dongle support for the 5? How did they think it was ok to ship the five with BETA firmware, without it saying that anywhere on the box? How the hell were we suppose to know that the thing wasn't ready for retail? 5 firmwares later and it still isn't ready for retail.
You never answer any of the important questions.... just tell us how great this next unit is, then avoid the same 10,000,000 questions about that new unit, six months later. And saying that we are just whiners, or idiots; that it is better than Apple or some other competitor, is NOT a legitimate answer to legitimate questions. We also don't want to hear, "it is coming, just wait". They promise 10,000 things with every new product, and then just stick it to us when it you find it that we are suppose to "wait". Then re-stuff it to us when the new model comes out, with the SAME PROMISES.
You keep telling everyone one here how great these things are -- then tell us why all these other issues are happening? To bad you can't delete these questions like you do on your forum, eh?
Well..... WE ARE ALL WAITING? Or perhaps you honestly know that this company is garbage beyond garbage.
GOOD LUCK!! TERRIBLE COMPANY...I would never buy anything from this company ever again. Archos promises stuff, then never delivers. Customer service is terrible adn the company couldn't care about their customers.
Plus...Charbax wrote...Archos features are unique and very advanced. (Like keeping time...which it can't do right...or syncing the DVR)
I like the one clowns excuse for the GPS. They never promised at the launch? They said that it was functional with the GPS when they began selling them. Then after we all got them and found out they weren't, they changed the web sight to say "coming soon". Care to bet "soon" means "never"? Ask everyone with a 605 how their HD support is going. And then he tries to say we should stop complaining because not another PMP has GPS? Sounds like another Charbax excuse -- just point the fingers at the competition. Guess what buddy? I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE OTHER COMPANIES. When I bought this POS we were told that it was functional with the GPS ... I am not going to just "forget" it because you want us to name another PMP that uses GPS. Lame excuse, little boy.
i would like to be able to hook up a usb keyboard to this baby
Too bad Charbax can't erase threads here like he does on his own forum. Funny how a company can create so hostages. When you use one extreme (Char), you create the opposite effect as well....Charbax, your Archos checks will start bouncing soon, so I'd go looking for another company you can blindly follow...
Charbax: Everything you say is a lie. Do us all a favor and get up off your knees and stop drinking Archos executive's spunk. All Archos products are pure junk, FACT.
To anyone looking to buy an Archos product: Please do a search online before you buy and you will see that ALL ARCHOS PRODUCT ARE PURE GARBAGE. Then take your money and purchase something worth buying.
I see Charbax doesn't seem to wanna come back and chit chat...he can go and bash on his own forum where he's the man... i will reiterate...RESEARCH BEFORE BUYING...ARCHOS SUCKS..............
Forget it having a phone. Work on everything first before you add more stuff in!
500GB would be great. Too many media players out there don't like to have 30+ GB of storage capacity. It also sounds like they'll finally be rid of those stupid PERMANENT ADS like on the Archos5.
But I want them to work on the headphone out sound quality.
Work on customer support. Hell, have you seen their site? You can't e-mail them. If you have a question, either call or they expect you to SNAIL MAIL it.
If it's stable, this would really fix the main software problems that kept me from buying the Archos 5 but I don't need it as a phone, just a media player. Let's see if Archos can even do that just right, first.
To add my 5 pence to the world of Archos...
I'm currently having a 605 Wifi which suddenly refused to connect to the PC over the USB cable.
Support requests posted over their website get acknowledged, with the promise of a customer support officer contacting you within 2 days. I posted three such requests, without ever getting any reply. Living in Hong Kong, the support center responsible would be in China - guess what - their support site does offer the option to contact support by phone - just not for China - or Middle East - or Russia.
Basically the only option I have is to contact their support staff in France via IDD call.
Considering the costs of the IDD call against the chances to actually get results I'm probably cheaper off buying a new device.
BTW - anyone ever noticed that the USB cable used for the 404 and the 605 - while looking identical and fitting perfectly well into each of the devices differ in the contacts they have? As if it is not enough that Archos uses a plug that will under guarantee never fit any other device (ever heard of mini USB? why use such a ridiculous plug? kinda reminds me on these sony memory sticks) now they even have to change the contacts inside the plug while leaving the the actual plug identical? WTF? If there would really be a reason to do so, why not at the very least also change the plug layout to prevent the accidental use of the wrong cable?
