Nokia 5800 launching in North American flavor this month for $399?
Unlocked European 5800s are still occasionally trickling into Nokia's Chicago and New York flagship stores, but you might want to hold off on taking the plunge if you spend more than a few passing minutes in the New World each month. The Nokia Blog is reporting that the remixed North American version of Nokia's first S60 5th Edition device will drop somewhere around February 26 for an MSRP of $399 -- though retailers can naturally charge less if they're feeling generous. Interestingly, we checked in with the stores last week about this very phone and were quoted "sometime in the second quarter" for launch -- but then again, we wouldn't put it past a site called The Nokia Blog be a little more attuned to the situation, if you know what we're saying.

$399? Geezuz, I hope that's unsubsidized.
Yeah sadly though no one will subsidize the price. Right now the 5800 express is $350 at the Nokia store so I don't see why the price would go up with this new model. There is no reason to wait if your under T-Mobile cause 3g wont work with either phone.
unsubsidized or not, you're best bet is to purchase a brand new iPhone or iPhone 3G
(eliminates alot of the guess work)
Damnit, Flashpoint. Now my inbox is going to be flooded with emails of replies of people calling you a moron.
I suppose I'll kick it off, then..
Moron.
And that, Jon, is why I uncheck the box that says to e-mail me.
Now, to continue the fun.
Flashpoint, I trust Nokia a hell of a lot more than I trust Apple. Nokia's been doing this for just a smidgeon longer than Apple has, and they're a bit more lenient about what I do with their smartphones.
Not to mention: Finland > Cupertino, CA
I have a 5800 and suspect that price is the Comes with Music variant. Of course, I don't need this as SymTorrent provides me with free music anyway.
On and Flashpoint: We Europeans by Nokias because we know what we're getting - namely MMS, copy and paste, bluetooth connectivity and video recording out of the box.
So what's the guitar pick for on that lanyard?
A more portable version of the stylus. It does include a stylus though just it's a little easier I would assume to pull that out for a quickie then the bigger stylus.
its for Guitar Hero world Tour...Nokia edition.
This is the $399 guitar pick that comes with a free phone.
It's a gimmick. Since the stylus (which I only use if I've set up the mini-QWERTY keyboards, playing DOOM or occasionally for hand writing) slots into the case it's not more portable.
...COMES WITH PLECTRUM
"Nokia's first S60 5th Edition device" - someone forgot to add the word touchscreen there.
IS the "Nokia's first S60 5th Edition device"...
It wouldn't be Nokia's first touchscreen device.
7700, 6708, and 7710 are the first touchscreen phones from nokia.
Add the N800 and N810 to that list as well.
Um... @Zane. N800/N810 are Maemo based (Linux) internet tablets that just happen to be touch screen enabled. Not S60 based like the 5800. Hell, those aren't even phones.
Um .. @gerbick, when did I say they were S60? I merely listed 2 more devices from Nokia that had a touchscreen.
its sad that it wont come w/ an AT&T logo and AT&T apps like MEdiaNET
means no $99 on 2yr contract
Oh my... why $399? =(
why you surprised? ifone cost 800-900$$
European version sells at Nokia Flagship Stores for $350... and cmon... what are you saying?
Wha? unlocked iphone costs 750CAD, or about 600USD
@Flashpoint
Time to break out the math again:
iPhone:
$200
$40 voice + $30 unlimited data + $20 unlimited messaging
24 months of service
total cost:
200 + 24*(40+30+20) = 2360
Nokia 5800
$400
$40 voice + $30 unlimited data and messaging
400 + 24 * (40+30) = 2080
You save $280. You could buy an iPod Touch with that.
I have asked this in some other comments already and i got no answer, maybe i'll be luckier this time :D
In the US, do you REALLY have to pay $70 or $90 for unlimited voice, data and messaging each month and there is no cheaper option? Because it looks like a major rip-off to me, i just can't believe it.
Seems fair since we pay around the same price over here in Bahrain.
$400 unlocked is fair for a phone like this. I've seen videos of the device it's nothing groundbreaking but it's definitely solid and responsive. If I had the choice I would grab one of these as opposed to an iPhone...everyone has a bloody iPhone...
Too late Nokia. I've had my Euro 5800 for almost 3 months and am looking forward to replacing it with something else.
I will take an unlocked quadband nokia anyday over an iphone. Its much easier to travel with, and use prepaid sims in other countries. So for my nokias have worked with ATT, t mobile, smart and globe . So i am happy
I thought they were going to sell this phone for $280, was that not in a previous Engadget post?!?! Please remind me people.
No-no-no, I've played with it for one whole day, 5800 is way weaker than iPhone.
I'm not trying to troll but the touch screen on this thing blows. The first ever t-screen I've owned is the iPod touch I'm typing this on. T-mobile offered me this free on an upgrade. Went into the shopto try it. Really unresponsive. I was pretty gutted as the specs are great.
It's a different type of screen - use your nails, not the pads of your fingers (which, frankly is manky since you leave fingerprints everywhere) and it's fine. Plus, of course, they continue to upgrade the firmware - V20 has just come out.
This phone isn't 3G? You'd think with all the time and effort put into this device they'd at least make it 3G. Also if Nokia was smart, they'd incorporate WiMax into this thing. So for $399 as is, this better be the best goddamn touch screen phone on the market. Otherwise I'm disappointed.
It's 3G and HSDPA.
Can't wait for the faked copy from Chinese no-name brand.
Umm guess what... it's out already.
Seriously?
Give me the link, really want to see it.
I'm thinking about picking this 5800.
I'll definitely take this over the iphone. Its way more functional out of the box, and since I am used to HTC touchscreens, itl work just fine.........Damnit I just bought an E71-2 too lol
Seems to be priced fair. They're selling it here for around 18000 Php (roughly $370) absolutely contract-free. Still waiting for the Comes With Music service though so I can rub it into my iPod/typical mp3 player using friends that they can fuck themselves with their crappy Limewire for free music. Heck, some of them have never even bought an original CD copy, ever. And yes... they actually still use Limewire. That's like so half a decade ago.
Without support for T-Mo USA 3G, this phone is useless to me. sigh.
Is it compatible with AT&T 3G? Anyone know for certain (This 'N. American' version)?
