UMID M1 photos definitely surface - the rest we're not so sure about

We've been hearing a bit about UMID's MID M1 since it was first spotted last month -- most of it wildly contradictory. At least we've reached a consensus (or so we think) on some of the essentials: weighing in at 0.7 pounds, this guy sports a 4.8-inch (1024 x 600) touchscreen, a 1.1GHz Atom processor, up to 1GB memory, up to 32GB SSD, WiBro / HSDPA / WiMAX / WiFi / Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel camera, mini USB 2.0, and an SD/USIM card. The device is shipping with Linux -- which may come as a surprise to whomever ordered its Windows and Internet Explorer keys. CNET states that pre-orders start February 13th for 512MB models, while according to AVING they hit the street on the 20th. This thing will set you back about $500 and is only available in Korea. Maybe. One thing we do know, however -- we got more pics for you after the break.

this thing + maple = my new pimped out calculator O:-)
It certainly wouldn't run anything more powerful like matlab ect.
Loss of eyesight anyone? lol
Probability of me buying one = Current economic climate at time of release / drunkenness at time of release x price being right (price/budget)
suggestion for the keys... tux and a fox on fire
Reminds me of a much smaller AA1
Who was in charge of keyboard design?:
"OK Design Team, you can keep shaving down unimportant keys like that space bar, maybe even put a surprise application button beside it too where the thumb would normally rest. But make damn sure the important keys are bigger. Like 'Q'."
Spacebar is small on all asian keyboard.
Why is the Q so big?
Because, if you think about it for a second, there was no way you could have put another key to its left; plus it doubles as a Caps Lock key, which - despite its debatable utility - has always been a larger key.
This is so small it can only be used by one hand at a time, so that space bar can be considered big enough.
Look at the size of it compared to a hand: http://image2.aving.net/2009/01/10/20090110171435543.JPG
Ships with Linux but has Windows keys?
......sure. Windows and Linux cost the same in Korea.
I'm confused, is this thing supposed to be called a subnetbook? Or simply "The laptop for midgets"?
The dedicated Internet Explorer key ruins it for me...
Hackintosh it and make it a first 'book for my daughter.
This is freaking small... If it had a 1.6ghz it would be interesting none the less.
I wish the Pandora's finish looked as sexy as that.
But yeah Windows keys on a Linux device. HUGE oversight there.
4.8-inch (1024 x 600) touchscreen
Is it even physically possible to read text with this thing? That's the same resolution as a lot of 9" netbooks I've seen.
Hope you only like to capitalize things with your LEFT HAND.
Yay for being a lefty!
... and they have room for an IE key on this thing?????????????
The "Q" is big because it's also -- intuitively -- the Qaps Lock.
Qaps Loq
Whatever you say - I still love the look of it.
I have a woman next to me in class that uses one of these! I feel like a weirdo, b/c I keep looking over to see what it is. I wonder if she got it from Korea?
Question: Why don't they remove the arrow keys and be done with it? I mean, really, gamers don't use them anymore - they switched to WASD a long time ago. Just a thought...
This doesn't look like a gaming laptop to me. But it looks like something you could edit text on so you can try moving the cursor around in text with WASD.
What I'm saying is, why remove usable keys such as tab, caps lock, ect. and simply remove the arrow keys. Using Fn + WASD would make a better text editing style anyway.
I pray to all available deities that wesley never gets hired to design peripherals, ever.
besides the space bar and q button, the keys look very type-able
Could be a nice portable console if you put some emulators and use the keyboard as a gamepad.

It should be obvious to anyone who has been reading news sites the PAST MONTH (since CES where there were a total of about five of these on display at the Intel Booth along with the UMID booth all running Windows XP!) would know that UMID is stating Linux / XP / Vista as OS options on these! Dynamism in the US and Mobilx in Europe is taking preorders NOW. As for information and PICTURES they have been posted all over the place the past month here are a few:

Am,I the only one who noticed this lil' bugger is running XP and I.E.
They said it is easy to install XP on Linux M1. So, I think, most of us can save some money by buying the linux m1. My biggest concern is m1 has just one "mini" usb port which will limit its usability significantly. I'm hesitating to get this one since I know the fact.
btw, they start getting orders from today.
Do you wanna be the first one to have an UMID M1?
