Dragonball Z refreshed & renewed in HD for 20th Anniversary
Avoiding the obvious solution of gravity training, the original Dragonball Z TV series is getting remastered for HD, in honor of its 20th anniversary. According to this Shonen Jump scan, the reworked episodes will begin airing in Japan April 5, with footage extended (we're hoping that doesn't mean stretched, it doesn't seem like it) for 16x9 displays, with remastered sound effects and, where available, re-dubbed vocals by the original cast. The remastered edition will only consist of 100 episodes or so, but we're sure DBZ fans are already preparing to import this one on Blu-ray.

The original animation is not up to par. Even if they clean it up, there's no detail in the artwork that is worthy of HD.
That remastering effort would be much better spent on a Studio Ghibli film.
If they are doing it like the Blu-ray movies, where they cut the top and bottom off part of the film, then no thankyou. Originality is sometimes best left alone.
They should make the Blu-Ray cheaper than the DVD, since you actually get less content (chopped off top and bottom).
Agreed. They could have easily added in the extra picture from the edges and made it widER than it originally was, and left the top and bottom intact, placing slightly narrower pillarboxes at the sides. It's not THAT important that the picture fill an entire 16x9 screen.
It'll probably be like what Funimation is doing for the DVD releases...rescanning the original film elements and making the compromise of actually getting more image on the sides while losing a little on the top and bottom.
now you can watch dbz in weeks time, instead of a months whoo.
Have they said whether or not it's even coming over here?
I'd rather get a remastered DragonBall set, and in it's original aspect ratio.
Also, by footage extended, they probably mean "uncut" or "uncensored". The televised versions are all censored from the original footage.
How is this different from the remastered version being released here?
Good to hear I guess, suppose I'll finally buy the show now. Already have all the Movies that have been released on BD so far
Good News ! DBZ was my favorite anime in childhood. I did saw those DBZ movie in blu-ray, they could had a lot better, fact is much harder to remaster old cartoon then a movie in HD, very few more than decade old anime is been transfer to blu-ray, but i hoped they do a good job transfer this jewel anime.
How is it only 100 eps? Wasn't it a lot more?
Yes, but unnecessarily so. Episodes were extended with filler to keep it in the same pace as the ongoing manga, which led to lots of unnecessary scenes of screaming and "powering up" and such that the series is so well known for. (Drag-on Ball Z) Shortening it to 100 eps might be the best thing to happen to the series...
Everyone that commented before me is GAY!!!!
yay, now the plot is cut in half. Oh, right? Plot............. um............ Well anyway, this is pretty much next to completly pointless. DBZ is NOT worth remastering and blu-ray is once again yet another crutch for them to milk this series for the dried up whatever it's worth. No subtance+no plot+no creativity=CRAP! Got nothing against the characters. They were likable. Db was obviously better. Getting uncut bundled box sets of that would prove a better use of time. But to convert dbz to hd and at that half the eps it's so stupid even the remaining fans of the series that haven't gone over to the db side would say it's dumb. Remember when they said the first two seasons would be uncut and replace those old voice actors? Yeah, good times. Oh wait, right after didn't they just start releasing those new season box sets? Oh, now I remember. It was those blu ray copies they decided to go with while they sold those with the 'movies'. Isn't it fun to learn just how well the anime dvd industry works. That's why noone cares for dub. Studios in america could care less for the actual show. They just want the money. Guess what? If everyone already has the dvds from before what makes you think any ideot would go out and buy 4 other different copies of the exact same show with the exact same content but 'now with more worthless trailers'.
And that, is why I laugh at the above comment. Watch Dbz in weeks instead of months....... Naw, I'm just bull******, That one made me LMAO in itself. So true, so true.
FREIZAAAAAA!!!!!
Seriously though, they could just cell-share CG the whole series and it would be better looking than rescanning the originals.
As long as I can get a dub (scoff all you want, English Vegeta's voice is SO cool, and subtitles are a pain in the ass) I'll at least take a look.
U sir, r a moron. CG is the most horrible form that any single show could ever take. It's the lowest, crappiest most useless creation in the existence of the universe. That said you must not like or watch anime much cause noone that like it would ever say something so stupid. Oh, here's something for you sub hater. BAKA!!!!
@Jim: you may be right about the CG thing, but keep your subtitles. Christopher Sabat > *
does not matter to me i will still be getting anything dbz when and if it comes here
I agree. Any moron can surely read... or can they? And CG is god-fucking-awful, hopefully they won't put much in this. I think it definitely has potential, especially with the reduction in episodes (less filler and "build up" episodes). Funimation's U.S. "HD remastered" dvd box sets are a joke, cropping galore and loss of detail due to extensive NR.
