AAXA pushes out P1 pint-sized pico projector

AAXA's recently rolled out a rather cute lil pico projector -- the P1 -- which boasts enough features to make it stand out from the pack, even if only slightly (there are so many to choose from these days). This half-pounder measures 2.3-inches wide and 4.1-inches long, and boasts a VGA resolution with a 1000:1 contrast ratio, and 12 ANSI lumens o' brightness -- making it a bit on the weak side. It's also got a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD slot, 1GB of internal storage and an on-board media player, with anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes of battery life. This puppy's available now for around $289.

Why???? What is the purpose of a projector you have to watch in a photography darkroom?... Oh, those are probably cheap to come by these days.
make it ~$100 and I'll consider it.
VGA, what are we projecting from, an HTC Diamond?
I'll consider a pico-projector when they make em WSVGA, aka, at least high res enough to do a netbook properly
You can do that, the HTC Diamond has a video out cable. This isn't a projector replacement, any more then a Netbook is a desktop replacement. It's just opens up new ways of using video projectors that never existed before. People haven't even begun to explore the possibilities yet.
They should give a dozen of these to a collective of artists and see what creative minds could do with these gadgets. (Of course, I suppose juvenile minds would just use them to blow up hardcore porn on every wall they could)
Mobile prono station!
People buy these things? .....and use them?
Not really. Pico size format is great, but no one will seriously consider investing in one of these until the specs go WAY up in terms of resolution, contrast, and brightness.
I know it may be awhile, but these are going to have to offer at least WXGA or greater res as well as brightness that can allow the image to be seen clearly in a lit room, before they're going to be taken seriously.
The price is also going to have to remain affordable. No more than $300.
But as long as that is accomplished, what presenter wouldn't want a projector this small to tote around in their bag?
Yup, I use mine. Although mostly just to project animated "virtual graffiti" on walls to annoy people. At night I can put up a 6 foot tall laughing skull on any wall I like. The battery life isn't long enough to watch a movie though, and the built in speakers are too quite for anyone to hear. I think artists are missing out on a nice opportunity to mess with people. These things are so much fun, they should be outlawed. x10 more fun then a laser pointed, if you're clever.
Actually I just bought this unit - it's very usable in darker environments. No you're not going to be able to project an image outdoors in the sunlight - but my dell 1000 lumen projector doesn't work in daylight either... I watch videos in the room at night with a 60" image it is pretty bright, and I watch videos in lecture sometimes ;)

I can understand the price issue, but in terms of brightness as long as you don't expect a home theater projector it works pretty damn well...
will this be better than the texas instrument's pico projector -

That looks like a nice bump up from the Aiptek Pocket Cinema v10 that I use now. Slightly brighter, slightly smaller, and some decent codex support. Plus a lens cap! (Something the PC10 is seriously missing)
Can someone explain the breakthrough technology that has caused all of these pico projectors to suddenly hit the market?
I assume it has a lot to do with the light source.
What is the technology?
How long does the light (bulb?) last?
What is the cost of ownership?
FYI, should check your facts better. The company website where you can actually buy the projector at, says it's 10 Lumen...

And that's the only page I've found where you can buy one, anywhere. You should have had that link your article as well.
