ASUS Eee Phone on track for "later this year"
Not a lot to go on here, but PC World is quoting an "ASUS representative" who says that the Eee Phone will be announced later this year. Unlike the Garmin-ASUS offerings, the Eee Phone would be a low-cost consumer jobbie as previously confirmed by ASUS' chairman, Jonney Shih. As such, we expect it to have a massive bezel, a cheap, over-sized plastic case and some kind of open-source OS that consumers can't resist. Hey ASUS, you got lucky with the Eee PC, don't push it.

slamEVIL @ Feb 12th 2009 11:49AM

CT @ Feb 12th 2009 9:58AM
Doesn't Asus good old America, likes their laptops easy and their phones complicated.
CJ @ Feb 12th 2009 11:13AM

Daniel @ Feb 12th 2009 3:03PM
Your sentence. No verb.
Bellzebub @ Feb 12th 2009 9:58AM
Jobbie, if it's as bad as Acer's attempt, you've probably got that one right!

Robotochan @ Feb 12th 2009 9:59AM
Man, they are making Eeeverything!
Temo @ Feb 12th 2009 10:36AM
That should be Asus new slogan.
"We make Eeeverything"
Major4Play @ Feb 12th 2009 10:48AM
They have been making smartphones for years where have you all been ?
Robotochan @ Feb 12th 2009 10:53AM
Actually, within a range of 4 miles from this location...
CJ @ Feb 12th 2009 10:24PM
... None of that above ground!
Robotochan @ Feb 13th 2009 4:16AM
Still waiting for someone to tell me where I said "wow I didn't know they made phones!" All I see is a comment saying "They make Eeeverything" which to most people would translate to "They make Eee everything" not "They've never made phones before!"
Nicu @ Feb 12th 2009 10:08AM
"Hey ASUS, you got lucky with the Eee PC, don't push it."
You never would have said "Hey Apple, you got lucky with the iPod, don't push it."
Lets hope they can make phones people actually want, instead of the overpriced garbage we have today. Too bad ASUS can't make the data plans at Verizon any cheaper.
Robert @ Feb 12th 2009 10:10AM
Hey ASUS, you created a new market with the Eee PC, please innovate again.
Fahdoos @ Feb 12th 2009 10:10AM
Horrible looking phone.

jonchwong @ Feb 12th 2009 10:10AM
This isn't exactly Asus' first dive into the cellphone market, they make a handful of smartphones.
Edward Byer @ Feb 12th 2009 10:12AM
Haha....Robotochan....I like that.
Yea well Asus Eee line has got it right. When normal people like me that really don't have a big bulge on one side of their pants (from their wallet...minds out of the gutter please lol). So yea I hope it is a hit and I will buy it, but I want the archos android phone in the works.
Fred @ Feb 12th 2009 10:13AM
"Hey Asus, don't release something that might become as popular as our beloved iPhone."
Alex Padilla @ Feb 12th 2009 10:15AM
No, I think Engadget was trying to say "Hey, Asus, don't saturate the cellphone market with your products like you did with netbooks."
Major4Play @ Feb 12th 2009 11:22AM
Yes the massive jump in sales Asus has enjoyed since the launch of the EeePc line up has been all due to the stupid market saturation.
Stupid Asus what are you thinking selling ridiculous amounts of your products !
Homeboy @ Feb 12th 2009 10:16AM
Best photoshop ever.
Asus will lose, cellphones are already dirt cheap. I can nab a phone with a sim card for £10
indigo_theatre @ Feb 12th 2009 10:17AM
If it can play Crysis, then sign me up for one.
Tim @ Feb 12th 2009 10:40AM
At first i thought LG was going a little too touch screen happy with their phones; then i thought RIM was getting a little blackberry happy (a flip phone?) And then there's Asus, who's getting REALLY happeee.
so much milking....
Major4Play @ Feb 12th 2009 10:50AM
Asus have made phones for ages, they made alot of OEM/ODM for other manufacturers like HP.
Engagdget bringing you pointless opinions about thing they really should know more about.....
Neha @ Feb 12th 2009 11:14AM
"Hey ASUS, you got lucky with the Eee PC, don't push it."
I remember iTards warning us to stay off the netbooks till Apple would unveil one and then we could all soil our pants. Now go back and stroke your iPhone.
Wolfticket @ Feb 12th 2009 11:15AM
Lovin' the eeephone shop :D

Michael @ Feb 12th 2009 11:38AM

Akshat @ Feb 12th 2009 12:11PM
They certainly didn't "get lucky" with the EEE pc, but this is certainly pushing it ...
Silver Patd @ Feb 12th 2009 12:17PM
A better photoshop mockup found here: http://www.androphones.com/asus-eee-android-phone-8.html
Still in 6 months alot can change, lots of android phones were announced, yet only one is on the market.
mx_rvr @ Feb 12th 2009 1:08PM

SewerShark @ Feb 12th 2009 1:25PM

Skippy @ Mar 3rd 2009 3:15PM
All you guys dissing asus and their line of eee's, probably havn't even tried one out before. As I type this from my eee, I can say that this is one of the best pieces of technology I have ever laid my hands on. Sure, cheap-ish plastic, semi-large bezel, linux. Asus didn't get "Lucky" they were smart and found a market that had been untouched. They have created well made devices at an awesome price, unlike many other companies out there.
As per the phone, I hope this one will be decent. I have yet to find a phone on the market that fits my needs.
Sid @ Feb 12th 2009 9:28PM
Man, that is one heck of a thin phone. Wonder if it can be rolled like paper ... ;)
yG @ Feb 13th 2009 7:31AM
They should stick to their Garmin-Asus Nuvifones.
