Netflix breaks the 10 million subscriber mark, keeps on truckin'
We can't say the economic crisis has been too kind to every industry, but it's been a best friend to Netflix. As consumers divert their out-on-the-town dollars to sit-on-my-arse-and-watch-Netflix dollars, the by-mail and streaming movie rental company is just breaking records left and right. After closing a stellar 2008 with 9.4 million customers, the company has today announced that the 10 million mark has been crossed. For those struggling with basic math, that means that it has added 600,000 net subscribers since January 1st. So, where does Netflix go from here? Into every nook and cranny it can, of course, so don't be shocked to see Watch Instantly creep onto your next HDTV, set-top-box, Blu-ray player or portable microwave. Seriously, it could happen.

Don't those workers look happy!
Well, they actually provide a service a lot of people unlike a certain satellite radio company.
Yea, they actually have jobs, unlike many others in this country.....
i think those wires on the ceiling choke/whip/electrocute the slackers
Wait what?
Xm Sirius: 16 million subscribers
Netflix: 10 Million subscribers
I'm not understanding what you're trying to say....
While you are right, Netflix is actually profitable.
Their streaming service will actually increase their profits since they will cut out some shipping costs.
SiriusXM still has so much debt that they can barely pay financing on.
Just having more subscribers doesn't make you better. Also, many SiriusXM subscribers are people who are given 1 or 2 year subscriptions when they bought a car and they cancel. SiriusXM doesn't want to show they cancelations, so they just keep providing the service with the subscribers not paying.
I have 5 people in my office that canceled their subscriptions when the free service ended. They still are getting service a year later.
Subscriber numbers are really there to make stockholder think they company will do better. That ship has left the building for SiriusXM.
@Killer
Even though netflix has less subscribers, they make more profit per subscriber since they don't have to do things like send satellites into space or build transponder towers, all they have to do is make contracts with film companies and keep warehouses open, perhaps open more. Plus, Netflix has actual growth opportunity, especially since they have big companies like Microsoft, where as SiriusXM is on their way to the slaughterhouse.
Well the way they work is going down hill. They don't ship as fast as they used to anymore-- now they're around a day late. Plus, since a few months ago, they started charging me an extra $1/month without notifying me for having the Blu-Ray option enabled. Weak sauce.
Damn this comment system.
Why does her race have to do with anything? I swear.
Are you sure your Netflix e-mails don't go straight to your junk folder or something? They sent out a pretty clear notification with an easy opt-out option. Opt-in probably would have been better, but in order to do that they would have had to take all the blu-ray titles out of your queue, I guess.
Seriously, did you forget about the middle man known as the "US Postal Service"? I don't get people always blaming things being late on the company when 99% of the time it's the carrier. I have seen some messed up mail in my time... to say I trust postal workers is like saying I trust the MLB to be steroid and AIDS free!
Ha, i guess it's 10 Million and 1, i just joined last night after ordering a Roku box.
You're gonna love it! Roku and Netflix rock!
....and 2 million are on trial subscirptions :)
Haha you wish, even my grandma has Netflix.
does anyone know how many subscribers Blockbuster/mail order has -- I currently am using blockbuster for Bluray --- is netflix any better???
Instant is the future. Netflix will be 90% instant in 3 years.
Not until the selection gets better, or even decent.
you obviously havent looked at the streaming section in a while. They have a way better selection now. You should check it out.

Not for those of us who want 1080p, it won't.
I can't believe world of warcraft has more subscribers than netflix. Seems like everyone I know is at least on the 1 movie at a time plan.
Does anyone know if Netflix has any plans to come to the UK??
I doubt it, I thought there were already services like this over there...??
Even if it comes, with the way internet companies operate here, you would be capped disconnected after a week of streaming.
Those look like some super-duper high-tech cash registers.
Maybe if more companies treated their customers the way Netflix did, the economy wouldn't be so far down the shitter.
Well, it won't be long before they're a wholly owned by Microsoft.
Interesting.. I was just the victim of a scam where someone used my credit card number to sign me up for a Netflix account, among other things. (I still don't understand the purpose of this, though I'm told it probably had to do with some 'Add a friend, get...' offer)
I'm surprised wow has more subscribers than netflix
Probably has something to do with wow being international and Netflix being US-only. 10 million is ~4% of the US adult population, which is probably probably quite a bit more than wow.
Living in Chicago, service was sparatic and that was a fault of the Postal Service. Now that I am in the near burbs, I haven't gotten a shipment on the second day or later in the four months I've been here.
I am also 99% positive you had to agree to the $1 blu-ray surcharge. Maybe someone in your household did so on your behalf?
I don't know what I'd do without Netflix.
Only problem I see with the expansion is the wait lists. Usually my movies are ready 'now'. I have a few discs on a 'very long' waitlist. Use the extra cash to buy more popular movies and more blu-ray please!
Now that I have play on ive been thinking about ditching netflix. I signed up for Block Buster online yesterday for 2 months for 10.00 a month. I will see how that works. If everything works well then I will drop the NF. Block Buster is going to add games soon and I dont pay extra for Bluray or HDDVDS in my que. We will see wich one I keep.
I have a friend who has Blockbuster, he likes them. But they don't carry unrated movies. Which sucks if you like to go outside the norm to some of the indie films.
I don't understand your logic. You got PlayOn, so you've decided to get Blockbuster, which is not compatible (so far that I know, I apologize if I'm incorrect) with the media server, and got rid of the one that was. You can easily switch to the lowest Netflix plan that still incorperates the unlimited streaming, even with Bluray discs for physical delivery. That's what I did. Granted, its a bit more than 10 bucks though, if I can remember, but I'd rather have my streaming to my PS3 for TV shows and things I'd rather not waste a disc rental on.
When the hell will Netflix be available in Canada? I really want to try this service out on my 360. C'mon Netflix, Microsoft and Canada. Get your asses in gear!
The market's too small... too much red tape. Not to mention that on average people in Canada have less disposable income than people in the US.
Does Netflix really make their employees wear uniforms for a warehouse job?
That seems a little ludicrous, it's not like they're working the cash registers at Safeway.
They might, but my guess is that the t-shirts and large banner were just there for a good press shot.
You know what would be nice? A Netflix Box. Like Redbox. Have that as a part of your subscription. Return a mailed movie in the Box, get another instantly, then return that one and have your que continued.
I think the combination of Watch Instantly and an economic downturn that makes home entertainment more appealing can only mean more growth for Netflix.
Netflix is a bunch of bullshit, it took four days to get my movie. When I ordered my iPod Touch (with standard shipping), it came from Shanghai and made it to my house in three days. I could have walked the movie to my house, faster than it took to ship it to my house.
blah blah blah... don't hate the company because your mailman likes to take your Netflix home and jack off on them before delivering them to you.
Yeah, but how many of those WoW subscribers are just one person w/ multiple accounts! lol.
I don't think it's surprising at all, and I hate WoW. Good for WoW.
Now what were talking about again? Oh yes... movies...
D'oh! "Damn this comment system"!!!
I can't sit around and just watch movies all day, hell I hardly have intentions to watch one. Im usually online or listening to non-stop music
Personally, I like the Netflix service but am really frustrated by the fact that half of the TV shows I have added to my streaming list block certain episodes with the 'Available on Disk Only', what the heck is that? You still have to get the DVD to watch the episodes, seems like a waste.
Netlfix sucks dick, a snail could've delivered the movie faster than Netflix. Use blockbuster, there movies actually arrive on time!!!
Buy Gamefly!
I agree whole-heartedly. I always pass those Red-Box's at Wal-Mart and wish I could toss Netflix envelopes in a similar fashion, access my account via the touchscreen to update, and go about my shopping.
