Video: Aigo's MID gets Windows XP, relabeled a UMPC
Aigo's MID has been around the block for what feels like ages now, but it's getting an all new purpose in life thanks to one of Redmond's operating systems. If you'll recall, a MID typically runs a "lightweight" OS and is designed to be more of a sophisticated PMP; on the other hand, a UMPC is built for a real-deal OS, something that business users may appreciate. Semantics aside, what we have posted up after the jump is a ten minute video showing off just how well this machine handles Windows XP, and by our estimations, it looks pretty darn good.

How well does it run Win7?
It hasn't got enough storage for W7. XP is the path of least resistance to the important apps.
This doesn't run XP, it runs XPe. They are not the same as the embedded version can be more limited than the non-embedded version: it all depends on the packages which are installed.
Because they like to give their users choice over what features they need and want to pay for.
You Apple fanboys crack me up. This is still the dumbest argument in the book. When did the choice to save money if you don't need all the features become a bad thing?
Written, of course, on my Macbook in OS X.
Because they want more than 4% worldwide marketshare.
Paul: this device is the perfect example for why multiple editions are useful. XP Embedded can be trimmed down and customized by OEMs. A large amount of functionality that you would need on a regular PC can be removed so the OS can be easily embedded on a lower-spec device, such as this Aigo MID.
A regular Windows or OS X install probably wouldn't work on this device. Thus, the need for XPe.
Not that any of the technical details, facts, or logical reasoning will matter to you when you write your next rant on the subject...
Just did some research: the reason XPe was needed and XP, 7, or OS X will not work is because the device only has 4 GB of storage.

16% ? Looks more like a little under 10%...unless you count the iPhone...

...and I'm not sure why your would count the iPhone, considering it doesn't use OSX. It might use a highly stripped variant of it, but I don't see that as being all that different from having an embedded version of Windows...
But in all seriousness, and without rancor, where did you get the 16% figure from ?
Awesome Mod! and great points on the potential a UMPC really could have. With the features he mentions I'd be in for one.
Dr Sbaitso, is that you?
Haha, this is the exact thought I had when I first heard his voice. I did not think it was a human at first.
Go fly a kite.
Wow, now that's a name I haven't heard in forever!
I sometimes feel that even for the fastest umpc's this one has to be the most stable one ive seen, all you need is a little bit more battery, which is not too far from the neer future...
would a custom built in mini solar panel on that back work a bit of wonders????, then maybe it would be worth its price of $900 to $1,100 dollars. Id totaly pay for that, would you?
I used to thing that I would grab one of those if I could find it somewhere, now however I think that by the time it will finally make it to the market it will already have been made obsolete by devices such as the new Archos smartphone(???) running Android, it will deliver all (and more) functions and a lot less hassles than the vanishing category of UMPCs.
The next step will be a Sony Vaio P, or some equivalent device that surely will soon try to exploit the Vaio P success , surely not this Aigo thing.
I am a huge Android fan, but you'd have to be a fool to think that Android offers anywhere near the same kind of functionality as Windows XP.
Wow, this is extremely nice. I'm jealous.
JKK! My man!
yeh.... but still no wifi drivers and chipset drivers....
I hate it when they smack windows on these little screens with no customized interface to make use easier or enhanced.
