Samsung dashes hopes for 12 megapixel phone at MWC
Okay, so a recap is definitely in order here. Merely 11 days ago, a flurry of rumors about Samsung's Mobile World Congress plans filtered out, which just so happened to include word of a 12 megapixel cameraphone. Then, the outfit itself leaked nine new models, giving just a wee bit of credence to the whispers we'd heard. Following that, we even saw a certain UK branch get ahold of one of its flagship models prior to the show, while it casually mentioned that no Android-based phones would be on display. Now, the other most awesome handset (er, rumored handset) is being squashed for a MWC debut, as Telecoms Korea has it that no dozen-megapixel phone is coming to Barcelona. No worries, though -- you'll have plenty to gawk at between the Blue Earth and the Ultra Touch S8300.

Who the F wants a 12 MP camera phone??? What, like it will take better pictures than my 6 MP D70?
No, but it will fit in your pocket.
The best camera is the one you have on your when you want to take a photo.
Yeah, but a 12 MP chip with that teeny tiny lens will probably look worse than a 4 MP chip with that crappy little lens. Who want 12 MP of high noise, blur, and poor low-light performance? There's not way that lens can deliver 12 MP of detail. It's purely marketing to stupid people who think more pixels equates to better quality.
While I agree with you in theory, the truth is that higher MP cameraphones take better pictures than lower MP cameraphones on average. Perhaps the lenses are better, perhaps the decoder chips are better? Yes, 12MP is almost certainly a marketting gimic but you get bet your ass that the eventual 12MP cameraphones will take better shots than the current crop of 5MP phones.
Yes, eventually 12MP phones will take better pictures than current phones, but currently that is not possible, and using fewer, but larger, pixels, and better glass will produce a much better picture than cramming in as many pixels as you can.
12 mp Mr Blurrycam pictures are still Mr Blurrycam pictures.
I would sacrifice size and weight for a phone that had a capable camera. Point and shoots have gotten pretty good (no comparable to my DSLR) but surely it wouldn't be too width to add a full camera.
Now I'm dreaming about an iPhone Pro.
Why? And someone always manages with the apple comments. I wish it would disappear.
Keep dreaming. Thin trumps all else in Apple's current design philosophy, even width and height. If they can make it SOOOOPER thin, what other dimension could possibly matter?
That's why that pancake of a phone and pancake of a laptop are their "triumph of design". Even if they're missing basic functionality.
This rush to MPx is ridiculous.
Without an optical zoom, it could be one hundred MPx it would still take phone pics.
If you want phone pics, anything from 2MPx can do it with a good software. If you want camera pics, buy a camera.
Dlna sounds interesting. Streaming from a media server to a phone is a pretty cool feature....
Pfft. Why...?
Thought it was an Ericsson. wtf.
Yeah, I did too
Until I read the article, and saw the great damned 'SAMSUNG' logo stamped to the phone.
Actually, it would be more accurate to say that I didn't think it was an SE phone at all.
SE don't make pieces of industrial crap like this. Pretty much every one in their lineup has a sensuous design.
I'm trying to find the Jason in this one, anybody see anything, or is engadget just tossing it into random posts.
Awww, where's Jason?
that's what i was about to ask. i guess they can't figure out where to place him
I'd hide him in the lens reflection.
Maybe in the flash lens? If that's the case, it's seriously distorted.
he''s in a logo on the bottom. his mask is sideways and small just over "ordina"
Nope, looks like the DLNA association logo.
I'm glad we ageee on iPhone officially overthrowing all USA smartphones in most traffic. Officially. Scary part is only been out 1.5 years, bb 10+. ouch. Don't worry there is hope for Aussie carriers, might drop price on iPhone soon,.it's amazing easiness of mobil blogging on this iPhone , anywhere anytime. It's clear this lead to it's domination .
Sorry to dissapoint, JerJer, but that's just the DLNA logo.

I agree with the first poster. 12MP camera phone is stupid. The original Nikon D1 only had 2MP and I GUARANTEE that it takes better pictues than this! The sensor on these things are the size of a pin head. Give me a break.
let me know when they start doing optical zooms on these.
naw
This will be interesting, I don't see this being that big of a hit since it is such a jump in quality. For most people. they don't take pictures with their phones that often. Any real photographer, like myself has a camera already with lenses and junk that they would rather use and have available for taking pictures. it will be nice having 12mp's but I really don't see the need of it.
unless they start selling lenses, batteries, and other stuff to make it equal to the camera's canon sony and nikon are selling other then megapixels.
Where's Jason?
There is nothing more funny than a bunch of consumers sparing over a fucking product.
Anyway, with that said, I'll add my two cents. You only need more mega pixels if you're going to enlarge the photo a great deal cause you don't want to see pix elation.
So why the fuck are these companies throwing big pixels all over the place like a 25 cent
crack whore slinging poon? Cause they need to up the product feature ante to sell their swag.
And unless you're going to put some SERIOUS optics on that bad boy, and Annie Leibowitz is going to be shooting your for the cover of Vanity Fair, give it up.
I thought this pic was a shopped version of the Innov8...so the comments about the lens size might not hold true later on
