Microsoft My Phone beta pre-registration now live
While Microsoft's official My Phone website still lacks that hopeful "sign in" button, the beta pre-registration is actually live and accepting enlistees from a different, albeit still Microsoft-hosted, address. It took our Hotmail credentials right away, reportedly putting us on the waiting list. If for some reason you wish to stay on the somewhat more virtuous path and wait for the main page to update, don't let us stop you. However, if you're eager to sign up now, hit up the read the link and get yourself on the wait list.

The Microsoft® My Phone service is temporarily unavailable due to system maintenance.
Please try again later. We apologize for the inconvenience.
That's the message I get as of 8:29pm central.
And then, at 8:30 when I hit the read link a second time (just to check) it got me to the current article pic. Either way, waitlist time...
oh no another, fix for an unfixable horrid os. Give up already see if apple has an extra os in their basement, they could give you. this is ridiculous.
Philosopher, you are a troll that commits the cardnial sin of forums/comments.
DO NOT reply to the first comment just to have your comment be at the top.
And WinMo is a good mobile phone OS. Pros, cons, overall it is good, otherwise it wouldn't do well in the free market, would it?
Apple doesn't have a phone OS, they have an OS with a phone app. It also has pros and cons. So shut it.
the service was down as the SIGN IN button is now available...
woot for microsoft... (wondering if it works on my iphone) lawl
I think that's a sign in for your Live account, at which point you get the "service down" message.
At least that's what happened to me. I don't even really know why I tried. I have a crappy Verizon dumbphone.
If it helps this is what I did to get on the wait list:
1) Sign in with your Windows Live ID (e.g. on hotmail) first.
2) Click on the Read link above.
3) Click on Add To Wait List.
This seems to bypass the problems with the "system maintenance" message. You will get this: "You have been added to the wait list. We will notify you as space becomes available. Thank you for your patience."
We'll see.
*sobbingly*
having a highly rated comment makes up for everthing thats gone wrong with my life...
*continues sobbing*
[btw anyone know how to change the password for returning commenters?]
and now its gone again... -_-
WTH microsoft WTH....
I just was just able to sign-up using my Hotmail account. Let's see what I signed-up for.
Got this just a minute ago.
Microsoft® My Phone pre-registration
Your e-mail address is already on our wait list. We will notify you (by e-mail to xxxxx@xxx.com) when you can register for the service. Thank you for your patience...
If this is going to be universal and cross-platform this will be kicking Itards ass left and right!
How is it going to do all these things you mentioned?
who still uses hotmail
After years of using Yahoo (since 1997) and then gmail I reactivated my hotmail (+live) account and now I use it 2-3 times a week. I use live on a daily basis (mesh on all my PCs, skydrive to share my papers/thesis etc with my professor and the research team, Officelive to save my office documents online, and also some other live features).
Why?
I do. I hate gmail :)
Nobody. It's only a joke.
When someone mentions hotmail.com, they're being *ironic*.
Hotmail is the no. 3 service behind Yahoo and AOL so someone must be using it.
Umm, I don't know anyone who still uses AOL, and nearly everyone I know uses Gmail. I don't have figures but I'd be shocked if Gmail was beaten by anyone but Yahoo in number of accounts. And then only if most of the Yahoo accounts were years old.
It's better than Yahoo! mail. I say this because Yahoo makes you pay them money if you want them to let you use POP/IMAP or even just to autoforward your stuff to another address.
I do. So do millions of other people around the world. For thing like e-mail, IM, cloud storage, and some sites even use the Live ID.
@Chris Are
Then prepare to be shocked because Gmail is currently 4th.
I went from hotmail to gmail and back to hotmail. I never do care for keeping contact info, but since I got a HTC diamond that syncs my hotmail contacts to my HTC, I think I will stay with hotmail.
I also use Hotmail for the free push email to my phone that comes with Windows Live, and the over-the-air contact management and sync. The desktop client also means I can manage emails and contacts even when I am offline. For calendaring I'm using the Google exchange service.
@Wormbolt
Not even a Wikipedia page? You just expect me to take it as fact because Wormbolt on Engadget comments said so/
oh no another, fix for an unfixable horrid os. Give up already see if apple has an extra os in their basement, they could give you. this is ridiculous
Sounded stupid the first time, sounds worse the second.
Bad news folks! Engadget has devolved into a mobile phone news site!!!!!!!!!
Engadget Mobile will soon be done away with as the regular engadget only cover cellphones anyway.
The only thing we can do is pray for a miracle people...... and hope against the odds.....
hmm do you think it could be becuase mobile phones happen to be gadgets and they are holding a huge conference?
Um, I already have an iPhone. Why would I want to use this iPhone Beta from Microsoft?
Um, cuz you want to make your boyfriend, Steve Jobs, jealous and later have make-up sex.
Because if they didn't try new things like this, Apple fans wouldn't have anything else to complain about.
There's a sign in button now.
Fantastic. Miscreantsoft My Phone "me too" beta is finally available for pre-registration. The massive R&D spending from this "me too" company must be mind boggling. Yet they can only come up with a derivative of Apple own tag "MobileMe" for their me too service. The "me too" DNA of this company when it comes to producing copycat products come through again and again.
This is supposed to be very different from MobileMe. It actually works.
My phone is free. Mobile me charge 100$.
Free+efficient=happy users=joyjoyjoy!
Jubei, you're a dumbass. I'm guessing you're pretty fucking jealous after the MobileMe fiasco:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/11/apple-fesses-up-to-mobileme-transition-difficulties/
It is obvious you are a troll and a Apple dumbfollower... First of all My Phone has not relation to mobile me, since Microsoft was working with sync technology even before about knew it existed. Second if you want to call a company a mee too company, that would be Apple because from part of their history every single "innovative" peace of technology they have implemented, they have stolen from another company. Heck even Steve J says that to be a great artist you have to steal but then again you guys drink the isugar with the itea and your icoffee and believe they are the innovative company they so claim to be. I do think that Apple makes great products but please stop thinking their technology is the shit, because even thought MobileMe was a failure you Itards think that it was a success because it's from Apple.
You mean the same "Mobile Me" that uses Microsoft's Active Sync and Exchange but only puts a shiny skin on it? You mean the same "Mobile Me" that's the same thing as Google App's, Yahoo Mobile, Mesh...? You mean the same "Mobile Me" that you have to pay $100 a year for, where as the other alternatives that were out way before it are still free? It seems it should be called "Mobile Me Too".
Nice job alitman...now some porn website developer is going to get your registration code and wonder why.
I lol'd
omg, microsoft must pay people to fill this post w/ ridiculous comments. no way in hell hotmail is better than gmail. that is the most absurd thing i've heard in a while. not only is gmail the best free email site, google docs will soon be making the $400 Microsoft Office obsolete. microsoft's efforts are way behind the curve. they are trying desperately to play catch up.
your an idiot please let me know one business that is going to use google docs instead of microsoft word. yes microsoft makes its money from businesses not students online who can't afford word anyone and will download it illegally. people need to open their eyes. Oh an google docs functionality is limited to color changing and ummm a few other things. Let me know when you can do things like tracking changes in google docs :). Google has its great stuff (search, maps etc) and Microsoft has theirs. Let every company excel at what they have and stop hating.
and google paid you im supposing?
Hotmail works perfectly fine, and Live ID becomes really useful when wanting to integrate with the Zune Software (I don't own a Zune, but the software is great, and not bloated), Xbox Live, and Office Online, which will challenge the great google docs you speak of in the upcoming year.
Unification and a true "Passport" to multiple services across multiple devices is great.
Good Talk.
"You have been added to the wait list. We will notify you as space becomes available. Thank you for your patience."
I'm wondering if I'll even have a use for this, but I'll wait until I can actually use it and see WHAT it is before I judge it. So far, I'm very happy with Skydrive--25GB free storage--now that I've found Gladinet for uploading my files to it.
I never thought I would live to see the Mapple store.
