Windows Mobile 6.5 "beta 2" ROM shoveled onto XPERIA X1, up for download
Yeah, you saw the jankitude running on a Touch HD, but while we wait for real, official devices to run this new OS with what we suspect will be quite a bit more "smooth," you can actually grab this so-called beta 2 ROM yourself and finagle it into your own Windows Mobile device... if you've got the chops. This is the same 5.2.21159.5.0.0 build we saw before, ported to the XPERIA X1, and free to download while it lasts -- flash at your own risk!

Remember when everyone said this Zune-ish interface was totally fake? No? Oh, now that it's real, of course not!
Where do those people who call PHOTOSHOPPDD go when something is real?
To the next article.
To the batmobile!
To the Skies!
To the left!
TO THE WINDOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW
Hahah they are in denial because it's not as good as the iPhone and now that the revelation is true, the deniers are weeping and crying. I don't blame them though, they need to get their hands on the iPhone =)
I'm not sure if this is cool or not.
OMG HES NOT SURE, I THINK WERE GETTING SOMEWHERE!!!
Flashpoint you shall be one of us soon.
;P
The tides have turned..
lol
Im not diggin' the whole hexagonal UI here.
anyone else?
I actually like it. Seems more finger friendly than rectangles.
My question is, what is Comm and what does it have to do with the Zune?
@ALCie This is a Windows Mobile Phone Rom, so comm is the communications manager for controlling, wifi/bluetooth/ect.
Hell Yeah! Settlers of Catan right on my main menu!
i wonder if you can get this up and running on an incite, cuz im buyin one today and wanna test it out, but not brick the phone
ugh, no QVGA!
I'll stick with TF3D unless 6.5 is a vast upgrade on the back-end.
Yes, because Touchflo 3D won't work with 6.5.
BS, man, TouchFLO is up and running on Pre-BETA WinMo 6.5 and actually pretty good.
The main hassle (-hoff?) with those builds are the debugging stuff that makes everything a lil' sloooooow.
The honeycomb interface seems so contrived ...as if Microsoft purposely seeking to differentiate themselves from ..um, Apple. Fitting the honeycomb graphical panel in a rectangle screen looks awkward.
Agreed, but knowing apples patent lawyers, this may be the only non infringing gui left lol
@ Ray
Really?

Seriously? Apple? Are you fracking kidding me? Have you never heard of or seen Palm OS?
Why do Apple fanboys swear that things never existed before Apple started doing them even though they've been around for more than a decade before that?
I'm going to have to call "bullshit" on that.
By making them hexoganal you've got regions that make the most of all available screen real estate giving your oily little fingers something more to aim at when trying to launch your Quake 1 app.
Seriously Microsoft? Why can't you start innovating something?
how is this not innovating? I have never seen a hexagonal icon system on a phone, and it will be interesting to see how it pans out. Kudos to microsoft for trying something new rather then trying to just rip the iphone off in a new way.
Maybe you should innovate with your avatar and leave Adobe alone!
@vdogg89
Maybe you should innovate with your trolling and leave Engadget alone!
And here I thought you were with Flashpoint....
I guess you're all different
The novel positioning of icons in a honeycomb is an improvement over the existing, tiny touch areas of the current WM. It really needed that. However, truly ugly flat UI lacking any shading, depth, consistency or appeal. I’m sure all the Micro$ofty fanboys will be happy none the less. As a WM user, (aside for handwriting recognition which I give kudos for) I hate WM lack of responsiveness, extremely crappy IE browser, sluggishness (try dialing 911 after your phone reboots for the seventh time). It pales in comparison to any OSX or Symbian OS based phone, but for the masses it hits Micro$ofts ‘good enough’ suite spot perfectly.
this isn't a complete rom.
its more of a proof of concept.
it isn't an everyday type rom.
and the new menu system sorta sucks.
There better be more to this then just a change of layouts. Cause if all thats new is the honeycomb then I'm gonna stick with 6.1 and TouchFlo 3D
winmo is officially dead.Iphone os prevails against all odds. the os king, one that revolitionized cell os.
Which shade of gray do you like?
Low or Lowest Ranked?
Whear kin eye joyn thuh "revolition"?!

I had to adjust my contrast just so I could read your post.
I can't believe we were all holding our breaths for some goddamn honeycombs. Fuck this shit, I'm gonna get into webOS or android.

hmm I see all the dbags suckin off MS took some time out of their duties to low rank me. carry on fanboys *suck suck suck suck*
We didn't low rank you because we're MS fanboys; we low ranked you because you're a dick.
Well we ALL own Xperias so what are we waiting for? I mean when I take the train to work every day all I see are X1's in everyone's hands so let's go download baby!
It reminds me of my nerdy old desktop wargaming days.
keyboard be fucking triangles and shit, lol
Seeing as 6.5 is simply an improvement to the base while we wait for 7, I'm pretty excited so far. Microsoft appears to be working to improve the UI (which has long been the problem with WM), and is also working other enhancements in as well, such as Outlook Live and their SkyBox services.
Coupled with enhanced media access and playback and improved Web Access (IE6, with alternatives such as Opera and Fennec coming), as well as Silverlight and Flash, and I think Microsoft is headed on the right track.
Windows Mobile 6.5 is not going to solve all problems, nor will it's users forgive all sins--but it does show that Microsoft is on track for 7, and many of us on this site are educated enough to upgrade our devices to 6.5 with the help of PPCGeeks and XDA.
This is a move in the right direction, I'm excited, and I applaud Microsoft for releasing an "interim" release because they realize their folly and are working hard to improve.
Not to mention Microsoft Tag (snap a tag, scan, find info.):

Have bricked a few phones trying mods, but luckily they have been replaced under warranty. Do not have the guts to try it on my ebay bought 15 months old tytn ii, will wait for something more reliable....though am itching
Judging by the demo video that was posted earlier, I'm guessing this will run poorly to very poorly.
