First hands-on with the HTC Touch Pro2 (with video!)
So this thing's definitely got some heft to it -- and honestly, especially for a business-centric device in this class, we don't think that's a bad thing. As with just about everything HTC churns out, the Touch Pro2 is exquisitely manufactured, feels rock-solid, and the WVGA is absolutely awesome -- we noticed that the gestures and animations are totally smooth and responsive, proving that WinMo is perfectly capable of handling this kind of UI dazzle. The Straight Talk functionality for seamlessly moving between different types of communication will be appreciated by anyone who spends half their business day on the phone and seems to work (and look) positively lovely -- and as for that speakerphone? We can totally picture ourselves slamming this thing upside down during a meeting in a fit of "our company just lost a $100M contract"-style rage with a satisfying, weighty "thud" and instantly bringing the whole room into the conversation. Follow the break for a couple videos of this thing in action (and sorry, no angry speakerphone fits).

Wow... isn't this great... this is everything I wanted the G1 to be... I swear the people who designed this phone couldn't have designed the G1
I think you're right about that. From reports, it sounds like the G1 was designed to Google's specifications, not in-house by HTC. Almost like HTC was just a contractor, not a proper designer. So, no, not really the same team, at least I don't think...
Extremely attractive looking. HUGE screen, looks responsive. Some really attractive features (stereo mics and speakers, the mute button on the back), and it looks pretty damn solid. I liked the sound of the slider when he closed the phone, it had a satisfying "clink" noise, like the phone was made of metal. I think I may haveta skip an iPhone for this beauty when AT&T grabs it. More than likely gonna be named the Tilt 2.
Damn you HTC DAMN YOU!!!!
i paid near retail price for my Touch Pro last september :( Then they bring out this...
The keyboard is amazing!
I was going to get a Touch Pro today, but after seeing this, I'm going to wait! Hopefully this beautiful device makes it to Sprint.
Myro, try out NATF's Fuze Rom, his current release is v4.3 and it is night and day from the stock AT&T rom. Granted there are one or two minor bugs with this version, but both are easily fixable and the solutions can be found on his thread over at xda devs. My experiences with the rom have been nothing but positive, it is extremely stable, quick, and responsive.
Why do I ge tthe impression this guy's tapped on Jerome before?
Does this thing not have a flash? Come on HTC!!! Would it kill you to throe a flash on there? I am not fond of the D pad being removed also, but the flash is a must have.
Give it a flash, a D-pad/joystick/tackball, a camera button, and a 3.5" jack, and this would be perfect. Hopefully they add all of those in before it gets released.
Great I bought my Sprint Touch Pro on release not to long ago, now they want me to buy a phone without a flashlight! : (
my SE Xperia X1 is crying constantly i think it might suicide after seeing this video !!!
mine is actually just craving to get this touch flo inside of itself
haha sry, bad word choice but it gets the point across
(sry for having two comments)
plus didnt you see how it tried to jump out of the guys hands?
maby its hiding a secret.... or a flaw and its self conscious... hahah
Mmmmmm love me these HTC phones....
I must say that it looks like ALL the NEGATIVE features of the Touch PRO are still here
1. no headphone jack
2. poor buttons especially leftrightupdown
3. poor battery life
so wait what did they improve? a bigger screen and a new speakerphone?
Less buttons?
probably even crappier battery
NO HEADPHONE JACK??? WTF ARE YOU THINKING?
thats like selling a computer without a soundcard
I have the AT&T FUZE. Same phone and:
1) I don't use the headphone jack on any phone because I use my phone to make CALLS. Not a huge issue.
2) With touch screen phones, I find that I rarely have to use the hardware buttons. 4 along the bottom row means a bigger screen. I like that, I think it plays up the strength of the big screen.
3) Poor battery life? Really??? I don't have to charge my phone more than once every 2 or 2.5 days. It's even better now that I removed all the bloatware.
great, nothing like screwing over the 1st gen owners with yet another $500 device with the functionality that the 1st one should have had. Screw them, I am going with the Palm Pre if it keeps living up to everything it seems to be so far.
That doesn't really seem fair. This thing won't be released til the end of the year, which is pretty much expected from HTC at this point -- they replace their flagship WinMo phone roughly every 12-16 months, based on the TyTn II / Touch Pro / Touch Pro2 pattern. Doesn't sound to me like they're screwing anyone, it's more just that they're releasing new gear yearly. As most tech companies (see: Apple, Zune, Blackberry) seem to do. How is that screwing old users, exactly? It's not like we don't know they'll release better stuff a year later!
I guarantee there will be a hotter, sleeker Palm device next year that the Pre owners will want more than their '1st gen' phone. Such is tech.
1) I wonder if it still gets as hot as my Sprint HTC Touch Pro gets after only a little bit of use, it can become quite uncomfortable to hold on to.
2) Continuing to have no built in 3.5mm headphone jack is just an epic fail from a company that make such nice devices.
3) Screen size ....wow is all I can say ...great to see them do this...though the slight bump in battery power is not going to help make it through the day.
The new Windows Mobile 6.5 still seems horribly outdated in comparison to stuff like the Pre or iPhone. The way that apple does their application store and how well integrated with the device it is just amazes me (but not the iPhone itself). Give me the OS of either the Palm Pre or the iPhone with the hardware of this device and it would be as close to perfect as 1 device could get...with the exception of no 3.5MM jack !! wth was HTC thinking here.
Nice to see the new Touch Flo on the devices function like people on XDA have been trying to hack it to, now to get this functionality we have to buy a whole new phone?? They should offer owners of the 1st Gen devices a free software upgrade for Touch Flo 3D, or do like Apple did and only charge $20.
I NEED THIS PHONE BADLY...HURRY AND RELEASE IN AMERICA PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
Any word from any Americn carriers (sprint specifically) when this will be released???
I WANT!!!
So... I'm guessing they got rid of the LED. That's a pity, but not a deal breaker. I wonder when Sprint will get this? Once I learned how to make WM more stable and less sluggish, I've been pleased with my HTC Touch Pro (though it's been replaced 4 times for random hardware failures...). Here's to hoping for better build quality in this unit. It looks amazing.
Wow! There are subtleties to design that HTC is brilliant at jumping on with every release. Here I refer to the desktop, conference call styled speakerphone mode. Very nice touch.
It's also tasteful how he sticks to comparing what the device is to how this HTC device improve on previous other HTC devices, without turning into a drop-down, drag-out battle with the competition. (Even if there's a motivation to not get compared in there.)
Good form from HTC.
@myro
GET OFF ELITE RC2 or RC3. I hate detracting from the hard work of the guys that took the time to make it, the rom is probably awesome on the European touch pro, but I think its something unique to the ATT Fuze. I was using RC3 with the update and just about every other time I soft reset I had to hard reset. It was terrible but I gave it the benefit of the doubt and worked with it. The final straw was when I was at jury duty and it crashed completely. I had to hard reset and even then would NOT let me align my screen to get it started again. Then the phone was highly unresponsive and slow. It took three hard resets before I could get through the align screen. I thought I had ruined it for good.
I went home and immediately installed ROMeOS rom and everything was a lot better. Its been five days and not one crash. Its an amazing phone.
i've always bitched about the lack of headphone jacks in some phones, until someone got me a bluetooth headphone adapter thingy.
now i bitch about the lack of A2DP in some phones...
I agree, I've no idea why anybody would care what the headphone jack looks like. The jack on this phone (and my T-Mo Dash, with the same connector) works great with standard mini-USB cords for charging and transfers, I use a bluetooth headset to make calls, and another bluetooth A2DP stereo headset if I want to listen to music or watch a video (of course, I can also use it for calls, but for standard phone duty I prefer a single ear option). Why screw with wires, that's so 20th Century? I can understand the poor slobs who bought iphones worrying about headphone jacks, but any decent product should have A2DP support these days.
will a keyboard pop up if I texted someone and didn't open the slider to reveal the keyboard?
I really hate keyboards that need to go into landscape mode to be usable. It is so painful to wait for the screen to redraw and to use both hands just to type.
The Pre's portrait keyboard looks awesome.
HTC has wonderful ideas, but executes them in a horribly janky fashion.
I have used two HTC-made WinMob phones. They had very poor build quality, and the OS is sluggish and crashy.
really was hoping for a more MP in camera department 3.5 MP was good 4 years ago need atleast 5MP these days
so for speaker phone you place it face down? as in...on its screen?
looks pretty good. just like my att tilt but allot nicer. hope they made proper drivers for GPU this time and improved video capture and playback. if that problem is not fixed that phone is as good as brick for me. is there any hardware info for this phone?
Holy shit! It tilts! I have found my replacement for my Tilt!
The videos are from phonedog....go look on their site. Same thing happened when they almost dropped the phone, they just cut the scene where it says phonedog
that is an ecic phone...i want it and LOL he almost dropped it
love this phone i heard it will ship to North America in early summer or the H2 part of the year. I liked the original HTC Touch Pro but i kind of thought it to be a bit chunky but then i typed on it and it was great. i love how this is the new HTC Touch HD but with a keyboard, i like how they didn't call this the HD Pro or something and stuck with the original name but with a 2 and left the HD alone. But I'm going to sell my original Diamond for the Diamond2 because i love that phone alot.
Excellent design. A lot of thought went into it. Bulky or not, it seems like a very useful handset. They're getting better and better all the time.
Just give me the Iphone, I still haven't found something better with more features yet on the market. These phones are all a copy of the Iphone.Until there is something original (new not copy) I will buy it immediately!!
do you know when this awesome phone should be coming to t-mobile?
Last thing he wants is come to Jerome Ave in Th Bronx...
Nice but a step in the wrong direction the slider on the current pro/diamond is too weak to begin with i work for sprint and see isuse's with them all the time. i would have like to see a beefing up of that hinge. I love the higher
screen res i wonder if it can play video at its native res if it can't then again disapointing. no muti touch no big deal cough. I am Vary happy with the speaker on the back Kick but hope its nextel loud. HHHMMMnnn thay got rid of most usable buttons damnit is it too much to ask for a usable d pad it souldent look like a d pad but have the fuctinality one. And thay TOOK OFF the flash light....MY favorite part to show off. becouse it can be over clocked and be super eye hurting bright hehehe yes i will shine it in your eyes
umm can u guys not read..... it comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack... forget iphine, who would want that hitler thing. it their way or the highway. windows maybe more problematic bt it more customizable and once you have it configured right, it runs frickin great... i would never want anything to do with itunes, too much control over you. windows all the way. if you can't configure it, go get a iphone, its for the technologically impaired.
Exactly the same dilemma, except my contract ends in 3 days. Something that I found educational; I asked T-mobile how much I'd used W'n'W in the last few months... Turns out not many MB as most of my web usage is on Wi-Fi.
The last few years I stuck with 'T' as I felt I must need the biggest MB bundle possible - clearly that is not the case so now I feel liberated. Now other networks have some reasonable MB bundles I won't ever again await T-mobile's months of delay for a customised locked down version of the product I'd prefer to get in its natural form... ;-)
Hey, those videos would be sweet if you hadn't shot them at a stupidly shallow angle with a nokia or whatever the hell that was
Some dumb punk stole my unlocked Touch Pro. I need a replacement and this is looking mighty tasty.
woah, i love the design.
when does this phone release in europe?
woah, i love the design.
does anyone know when the touch pro 2 will be released in europe?
does anybody know wat te release date for this is
what is the relase date for this phone in europe??
