Nokia busts out its own 8 megapixel slider: the N86
Whoa, Nelly! While Samsung is strutting its 8 megapixel Memoir and Sony Ericsson is letting us all in on the forthcoming 12 megapixel Idou, Nokia is getting even with its 8 megapixel N86. Amazingly, we saw that the suits in Espoo had this thing on the brain way back in 2007, but not until today have we seen a real live product. The N-series slider boasts a Carl Zeiss lens, AutoFocus, dual-LED flash and Symbian S60, not to mention a 2.6-inch OLED display, 8GB of internal memory, a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, microUSB connector and Share on Ovi integration. We're left in the dark when it comes to pricing and availability, but we're hoping to hear more really, really soon. More shots are waiting in the read link.
Update: The full specs sheets have just leaked, yum!

way too fugly...
Megapixel hogwash.
no xenon flash? FAIL
It's like buying a 1080p set with only composite inputs...
My 12 month old N82 is preferable to this 'new' model. What a waste of time Nokia. You've released a 'high end camera phone' without the 'high end camera phone' consumer requirements, and believe it or not... more mega pixels isn't a requirement.
It's encouraging to see though that whilst the rest of us struggle with finances, you guys can afford to piss money up the wall; although clearly you've saved some shekels on R&D with this plastic abortion.
...
So disappointed. Can you tell?
These Nokia phones are ugly as hell. I don't know who their designers are, but I hope the women of Finland are not as ugly as their phones.
They are using the same ugly fonts for their OS as they have been using for the last 10 years.
@ zale
exactly, they need a massive UI overhall, i don't want to go on about the iphone but atleast apple know how to make an attractive interface.
the new models are boring... it's very disappointing
Yummo!
This is what Nokia is all about! Solid phones with the latest tech!
ugly, ugly, ugly and ugly
Decent phone, but not much of an improvement over the n85, except 8mp camera, digital compass, and glass screen. Why no Xenon Flash?!
Nokia not really stirring the juices
Spec has something wrong. It says battery life for Standby time 11.5hr (3G).
Standby time 13h hours max for GSM?!!!
I agree this can't be right!!
Finally! A phone with a keypad to replace my Motorola Startac!
I uploaded the video of about 40 secs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifvrMqzbID4
people these are just pictures, want you see in pictures may not reflect the same opinion when you actually see it in real life
Boring...
SonyEricsson-ish
an N86 with an 8MP cam, and an N97 with a 5MP cam...hmm...
i know nowadays N-numbers don't mean much, but to the general public, bigger numbers = better. Nokia have got their marketing all wrong :/
the only way that brick of a phone would have made a splash, is if it had been launched in 2007 when they allegedly thought about it.
what a boring, ugly load of c*ap.
8mp... the only other new good thing about this phone is the new style of the numeric keypad. Looks much more comfortable than the n81/n85/n96 style gaypads.
phone design wise, disappointing... DUAL SLIDE AGAIN??? Come on nokia..
Welcome to 1994 Nokia!
This phone with touch screen would have looked quite nice.
Ugly or not, this Symbian UI was developer for functionality, symbian ui is the resultant of a decade of evolution in cellphone interface.
Now, the cons about this cellphone is:
a) weird keys.
b) still 240x320.
c) 640x480 video capture.
d) battery life.
wow, triband WCDMA, finally improving on the band availability. At least with a EURO model, you could mostly get 3g in the US. The reason I say mostly, is because places like Indy, Pittsburgh, I know have 3g on 850mhz, but i don't recall seeing any 1900, not that I'm saying there isn't any 1900.
This is a real camera phone! The camera specs are impressive. And I am not talking about megapixels, but variable aperture, wide 28mm equiv lens, mechanical shutter? Also the sensor is pretty big for a phone (but still a little smaller than a standard compact digital camera). This is great for a phone. Only zoom is lacking to be comparable with a entry level photo camera. Not sure about the flash though (it's something new to Nokia - a 3.5 meter flash LED but I still think Xenon should be better)
Nokia designer please stand up.... yes you sire! you're the designer? good. Just stand still will I load this gun
Looks just like my n85 with a better camera, kind of a waste for a new product release. should have just waited.
Oh, Nokia. I just don't care anymore.
No xenon flash? No querty? no touch? No hardware graphics acceleration? Ugly design....
FAIL! rawr.
WTF!?
8 m without xenon? I better keep my N82.
Amen stranger. Amen.
*Hugs his N82*
Party like it´s 1999

I would not mind this phone.
As a Nokia fan, I'm very disappointed. My plans for 2009: hold on to my N82 until Sept. If by that time Nokia hasn't announced a 8MP with xenon flash (and preferably a touchscreen interface), I go for a SE Idou. Nokia can continue releasing N95 clones all the way to bankruptcy, for all I care.
i've got an N82 at the moment and my plan is exactly the same, got my upgrade in september and its looking like i'll be getting the idou unless something else amazing gets unveiled by then
The German site xonio.com got a confirmation officially from Nokia that the N86 is true:
http://www.xonio.com/news/Nokia-N86-mit-8-Megapixel-Kamera-kommt_35121029.html
i meant its just s60 v 5 with a skin, not a new OS
:S oops, 2 many engadget windows open
Is Nokia dying or what?
Nokia: Lets make a phone, with new features
Nokia rep: But sir, if we give them all the features, they will have no reason to upgrade to our newest model
Nokia: Well just run through the spec sheet, make some part better, but just remove others, its what we do
Nokia Rep: Sure, we know people want touch screen, qwerty, predictive text, wifi, 3g, quad band, and a really nice camera, with flash and video capture.
Nokia: Well, we have to take off a few of those, its part of our process, spin this wheel as to what feature to leave off
+1 for your excellent spying tactics. Solid Snake would be proud. Im sure that's EXACTLY how it goes down.
i like how its basic, you dont always need a thousand face buttons. thou this doesnt have a QWERTY which i like in the new NOKIA
Come on Nokia!
Where are all the cool form factor devices? You know? The ones you used to make? Like the N92 camcorder phone, or the E70 butterfly phone!
It seems 2 out of every 3 announced Nokia phones is a boring slider!
