We sniffed out
Nokia's new E55 not-a-QWERTY QWERTY candybar phone, which uses a SureType-esque predictive text mechanism with two letters per key, and looks pretty good doing it. Nokia's calling this the "world's thinnest smartphone," quite the feat if it's true, and it might just give Nokia's ultrapopular E71 a run for its money in the "fashionably smart" category. We played with the phone for a brief moment, and though it's running an alpha software build, we didn't have much trouble typing out a quick message. Unfortunately, while the keys are naturally larger, they aren't very "clicky" or distinct -- not horrible, but certainly not best-in-class. The prediction works well enough, learning new words after one entry, and letting you d-pad up and down through other options if it doesn't get it right the first try. Overall the phone feels on par with quality of the E71, though lighter and smaller, and is insanely pocketable. Video is after the break.
Looks nice, Good price.
When the Pearl came out I heard that keyboard layout referred to as "half qwerty, half torture." A couple of my buddies had it and couldn't agree more.
740 Hours Stand-by time!!!
Really nice!
Thin smarphones ftw!
The size was the main reason I bought the G900 I have now.
same here the size was the main issue why i bought an E51 slim, smart, has everything except GPS...
also it was cheaper than the E71.....

Beautiful! Functionally and cosmetically very similar to the hp iPAQ Voice Messenger (also with the compact keyboard), but even thinner.
And of course, half the price!
whats with the link you sent?
they have less info than the picture here on engadget
Hah, you can tell somebody who doesn't use smartphones (me) - I was looking at that picture thinking hmmm, that phone looks really nice, but it's definitely too big... then the post says 'insanely pocketable' :) Maybe compared to an iphone or whatever.
Well, Nokia may as some say be a year behind everybody else and his dog when it comes to innovation, but they can certainly make a phone worth buying.
definitely a sexy phone..though I don't think there's any reason to dump my E71 in favor of it
bigger screen, complete keyboard...
e71 > e55
in all cases

^^^ You must not be aware but the E71 actually has a smaller screen. 2.36" vs. 2.4" (E55)
When you think of it, iPhone is a better value in your pocket. At $199, you get the most advanced smartphone in the market today, along with sophisticated design and UI.
True. The iPhone is a better value when it stays in your pocket with your friends simply knowing you have one. Taking it out of your pocket and actually using it would just reveal its glaring limitations.
Kurt, iPhone is one of the most limited smartphones on the market in terms of functionality. In fact any Nokia smartphone from 2005 is more advanced (real bluetooth with AD2P, modem capability, radio, MMS, front camera, etc). By no means iPhone is the most advanced. And if you don't hack the iPhone you can't even install VoIP through 3G applications (only through Wi-fi) or some faster browsers (like those who compress data before sending to phone). iPhone can't even save a PDF email attachement (without eventually a 3rd party software). But it has a great processor, responds really well, looks good and is easy to use. So it's a very usable phone, but not the most advanced. Anyway, great to see that this Nokia E55 has a 600 mhz processor instead of the old 369 mhz. If they could just make a bigger resolution screen for non-touch phones too I would buy it. But I think I'll have to choose 5800 for it's 640x360, 3.2" screen even if I'm not a big touch phones fan (but I dont see another way to have a big screen and a not very big phone).
most of these new phones e55,e75,n85,n79... are shown in landscape mode with the controls & keypad towards the right. Does the screen turn otherway (with controls towards the left)?
I don't think so. My N82 only re-orientates with controls on the right, not the left
nice, but the E75 is what its all about, althou i like this one to, lol, fuck so many phones to pick now days, i love android but i love my NOKIA's, what phone to pick, if NOKIA gets in with Android, that'll be the day my nuts blow up, lol, whatever that means

Fantastic phone, everything I want in a very small slim device.
I'm definitely going to upgrade my E51 for sure.

Darren.
