Orange becoming first in Europe with LG's G910 Watch Phone
We knew production was destined to start in 2009, and lo and behold, Orange has committed to selling the thing. You heard right -- sometime "later this year," LG's G910 Watch Phone will be available across the operator's European footprint, though there's nary a mention of pricing. For those who've forgotten, this timepiece will support Bluetooth headset pairing, 3G HSDPA, video calling, multimedia playback and touch input, and it'll also make you the coolest cat in the office. And that's a Billy Mays guarantee.

Oh crap. Please tell me these aren't the new generation of calculator watches.
Flashpoint @ Feb 16th 2009 3:50PM
BUT...can it Copy/Paste?
ImaYam @ Feb 16th 2009 7:02PM
I think one of them vibrated off the stand.
Rod @ Feb 16th 2009 1:13PM
"and it'll also make you the coolest cat in the office"
yer, for about a week, until the novelty wears off and then you'll realise that you just look like a complete TW*T.
Kaitou KID @ Feb 16th 2009 1:25PM
no kidding. you'll probably feel pretty dumb holding your wrist to your ear and talking like that for minutes. probably for bond-wannabes who never grew out of it
Tommo @ Feb 16th 2009 2:47PM
That isn't how you use it, STUPED!!!
nkatz @ Feb 16th 2009 5:09PM
"Stuped"?
konshuss @ Feb 16th 2009 5:10PM
If you've got the cool factor to pull it off, it can be done. As long as you don't actually DRESS like Dick Tracy, you'll be fine.
Finnschi @ Feb 16th 2009 1:14PM
Omg , German school system already has a HUGE problem with people Cheating on test... haha I raised my average by 1 using the iPhone.... Wikiamo FTW!!
ps: I totally get that phone, if they start selling it unlocked... (I can clone my T-mobile iPhone sim card , did the same to get my 3G card for my laptop on the T-Mobile plan :)
From My Cube @ Feb 16th 2009 1:45PM
your a badass, not only are you cheating in school....well yeah your cheating in school way to go
matt @ Feb 16th 2009 1:57PM
And posting about it on a widely read public forum. With a link to your website, and a username, that when googled gives a whole host of information about you. (Nice pictures of your friends BTW!) You obviously needed to cheat due to a lack of braincells...
Towncivilian @ Feb 16th 2009 2:24PM
I dunno about Germany, but in the US new SIMs can't be easily cloned and cloning attempts can render the SIM card unusable.
Finnschi @ Feb 16th 2009 2:54PM
hahah yea I know i am pretty public, so what ^^ btw, don't say i am stupid, i finished US-High school with a 4.0 GPA ;) you kinda need to cheat to survive German High school tho "Abitur" is not so easy, and instead of remebering dates for my history class I rather just look them up.. ;)
Finnschi @ Feb 16th 2009 2:55PM
And about Cloning, T-mobile will Clone my simcard for 29€ they can also give me a Multi- sim (differnt number , same plan) which is GREAT!

iLoveApple @ Feb 16th 2009 1:19PM
It's gonna be free in the UK, I can guarantee that much. I think I would actually consider the black one...
Finnschi @ Feb 16th 2009 3:12PM
yea I guesss the same in Germany, omg European Cell phone system is so much better than the US market... OMG !!!
Jon Acheson @ Feb 16th 2009 1:20PM
It looks better than the Palm watch, for what it's worth. Still seems pretty bulky, though.
Cargojack @ Feb 16th 2009 2:50PM
Holy Moly! I need THAT gadget! I need a cell phone watch!!!
Please have a contest and give away a few of them babies!
I have t-mobile in the USA. Are those babies GSM????
Can I get one unlocked?????
mynk @ Feb 16th 2009 1:23PM
actually, even for a watch, it doesn't look half bad.
the engadget biomass is now starting to seem like the type that aren't open to new ideas.
seeing microsoft's new deal with orange and LG, maybe they'll make a windows 6.5 custom watch version.
AMiSH PiRATE @ Feb 16th 2009 1:24PM
Tommy! We need you to fix our power watches so we can contact Zordon! Rita sent putties to attack the orphanage!

Orange get watches and Vodafone gets Pre (apparently), i think its time to switch networks.
Galley @ Feb 16th 2009 1:33PM
Unless you're Dick Tracy, it's not cool to wear one of these.
Vander @ Feb 16th 2009 1:44PM
Want!
JaXX @ Feb 16th 2009 1:56PM
Wrist Cancer! :-)
Jon Acheson @ Feb 16th 2009 2:12PM
Did your regular cellphone give you hand cancer?
JaXX @ Feb 16th 2009 2:42PM
Do you keep your regular phone in your hand all day long ?
dbrow @ Feb 16th 2009 3:59PM
No, but I keep it in my pocket, which happens to be very close to another part of my anatomy I'd rather not get cancer in. However this hasn't really happened yet so I think I'm good. As far as this goes I can see it being a neat item for some people. I'm guessing you have to have a bluetooth headset to use this. My only thing is I hate the damn headsets. If they had a much lower visibility I would have no problem using the things. Well that and then there is the creepy "I look like I'm talking to myself" thing going on, but eventually me thinks that will be the norm.
Now as far as this watch phone goes I do see it being useful in one other aspect of cellular tech thats coming about. I read in some IEEE journal article that they can get near 100% mechanical to electrical energy conversion from a piezoelectric disk if it is made around 200 nm thick. Considering how much my watch moves around during the day I'd say this would be a fairly good platform to being using the tech when it's commercialized, but who knows how long that will take. Overall I think some people will buy into this (teenagers, gadgety types, people looking for something different). One thing is for sure, you will be a lot less likely to forget your cell somewhere if you wear the thing around.... unless you are like me. I can lose almost anything
MowDownJoe @ Feb 16th 2009 2:03PM
I actually think these look kinda cool. Albeit, you'll be reaching for a bluetooth headset before long after saying "Go" into your watch for the 100th time. But I still like the idea.
PS3guy @ Feb 16th 2009 2:14PM
Cool I'll get one.
xcom2002 @ Feb 16th 2009 9:14PM
I don't give a flying floppy if this makes me look like a geek ...I will be getting one when they get to the US!
As far as I am concerned If it came with a antenna that automatically came up when you started dialing ALL THE BETTER.
HAHAH I love it!
Rod @ Feb 16th 2009 2:31PM
I admire your honesty! ;o)
matthew @ Feb 16th 2009 2:48PM
OBVIOUSLY this watch is bluetooth enabled so holding it up to your ear is not going to happen
AMiSH PiRATE @ Feb 17th 2009 9:16AM
what's the point if you can't hold it up to your ear? how else can you pretend to be fixing your hair while you're secretly talking to soviet spies?
ZSX @ Feb 16th 2009 2:42PM
Not sure I would give up a smart phone for this, but man, this is hot in a geeky way. Decisions, decision!
mrChin @ Feb 16th 2009 2:42PM
man, i JUST bought a Casio Databank EDB-610! had i known about this, i TOTALLY would have waited!
Jennifer @ Feb 16th 2009 3:03PM
I would definitely get one of these! I drop my phone ALL the time so this would save me a lot of hassle and scratches. I dropped my brand new smart phone on the sidewalk the other day and cracked the screen and seriously scuffed up the front. If I had one of these I would never have to worry about crap like that happening again.
Sarig @ Feb 16th 2009 3:40PM
I'd want one of these just to...have it.
So about the same as 90% of the other gadgets out there that I have no need for but want.
That's what makes us geeks ;)
Charles Knight @ Feb 16th 2009 5:57PM
The problem with this phone is cultural, now from my visits to the USA, it seems that it's an acceptable thing to do to wander around with a bluetooth headset. However, in the UK at least, using one away from your car is seen as a sign that you are a complete tool, in the same way as if you worn a comedy tie to the office.
This will be know as the toolphone.
Malaycobra @ Feb 16th 2009 7:10PM
Like someone said, if you could use this for calls and your handset for emails and surfing it would be very cool. I keep butt-dialing people from my E-71 when the keypad lock doesn't engage quick enough.
Also, when I work from home, I hate having to carry my phone around the house in my underwear!
Actually if you could tether this thing's 3G connection to something like an Nokia 810 tablet it might be a workable package.
FILA @ Feb 16th 2009 10:06PM
these watch phones are nice cuz there small and you can wear it and dont have to worry bout loosing it but there not gonna catch on, people want one gadget to do it all, your not gonna be able to type much on this, do your calendar and all that shit, its just not right for it, and its not gonna take off. its like those finger ring phones way back in the day
Benson @ Feb 16th 2009 11:08PM
No comment on the title's awkward phrasing? I suppose becoming first is better than becoming late, anyway...
If this weren't gonna be expensive, I'd buy it. My problem with watchphones is simple: there's a gap between the GPRS ones (which I can afford) and the 3G ones (which I can't), with no semi-affordable EDGE models in the middle. As tethering (T-mo USA) to my N800 and N810 is my phone's main duty, I can't justify the ones I can afford, because they fall down on that, and I can't justify the 3G (but not for T-mo!) ones' insane prices without getting some 3G.
Sometimes I think maybe I should switch carriers, but then I think I should get a $5 armband and just say my 3555 is a watchphone. ;)
