Its
TouchWiz implementation is still a little raw -- first time they've done this on S60, so we'll cut them some slack -- but otherwise, we're seriously stoked by everything we've seen of the
OmniaHD this week. The display simply has to be seen to be believed, clocking in at a breathtaking 3.7 inches -- and we noticed that it has a rather uncanny capability for washing out any other display within striking distance. Check out this
Memoir here, held side-by-side for comparison: taken alone, the thing has a gorgeous display, but it pales in comparison to that glorious AMOLED alongside (also notice how the already-large Memoir gets dwarfed by the OmniaHD's massive package). Despite its size, the phone was comfortable in the hand -- and even in its rickety pre-beta state, the firmware was really flying through crazy 3D transitions, so we're hopeful that this is going to be one of the most desirable phones of the year when it hits. Follow the break for a video tour of the interface!
Massive Package? Want.
dude, you're just settin' that up...
and you hit it out of the park.
wait. that's what.........you want me to say.
capacitive, resistive, screen click.,it dont matter. They have zero to no chance to dethrone iphone touchscreen, once it comes out n u use n see how buggy n nonresponsive it really will be .
@ philosopher- you're a dipshit.
Wow.,720p.Yes , it took 2 years and they finally came out with a screen larger than iPhone . Bottom line all these iphonesque phones look good n all, but will they sell,.? Remember in order to succeed , u need to sell, right??? Today is their day for center stage, but once dust settles who will be standing,,??
The real question here is , will feature rich cells kill iPhone ,.???
Will they break zero to 1 million , in 72 hour record ?????can't wait to find out!!!
touchwiz = trash
Ok boys and girls. 720p is gonna cost you $700 million bajillion bucks and battery life is only 2 minutes. ;) if not, i am sold.
That Omnia HD looks nice, and with that AMOLED screen just makes it nicer.
AMOLED ftw
"Me want one"
This video seriously makes me wonder... can a resistive touchscreen actually be good?
I have always thought no, but the omnia HD seems to be changing my mind...
Should I abandon my "capacitive screen or bust" road trip or what?
That's a capacitive screen. And ironically it isn't that responsive...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKwGllZQ8gM&feature=channel
A resistive screen can be responsive- what it can never be is multitouch, though. Really, that's the only reason to care about the distinction- you can make a crappy capacitive screen, it's just that the current phones that use capacitive screens tend to be "flagship" devices that get a bit more effort.
Okay... hmmm while it is not so responsive as a capacitive screen, it would be very responsive if it was a resistive...
So many cool phones coming out. I think the pre will be the ultimate business phone, but this one looks to be the best multimedia phone ever made, that screen is awesome.
So the omnia HD's got a capacitive touchscreen, but I am assuming it lacks multitouch, like the pre and the new lg phone have.
The multi touch does make web-browsing a good bit easier...
@Ike: Capacitive is 100% responsive -- it's the way the UI works that's different. For instance, to combat the stupidity of accidental touches triggering app attacks (ref HTC home screen clock), that clock requires a touch and hold to activate.
And it being OMAP3 (and rumors of the SE Idou being one also) without any other "Snapdragon appearance" @ MWC pretty much seals Snapdragon's grave.
It feels weird to say this, but this screen is actually too big in my opinion. That thing is a monster. I appreciate the insane hardware its packing, but I feel like I wouldn't be able to put it in my pocket.
Is that a Samsung OmniaHD in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
What CRAPPY camera is Engadget using this MWC???
Their videos are easily the worst of all MWC reviewers. Odd.
these are gonna be expensive...
like, KENNY GLENN'S LAWYER expensive.
coming from Sammy, may be not as expensive as it would normally be.
I must admit I'd quite like it for that Standby screen to get hacked into uh... say... my 5800.
It probably will, eventually.
the S60 hacking community is quite vibrant, and they've done some pretty amazing things with the platform
Can someone tell us the CPU Samsung is using in this puppy? Thanks.
Texas Instruments latest OMAP. ie OMAP3430 - 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 + PowerVR SGX 530 GPU + 430MHz C64x+ DSP + ISP (Image Signal Processor). It is the same one used in Palm Pre. The successor of OMAP 2 ,used in Innov8, N95,N82 etc
CRAZY HD VIDEO QUALITY....

that interface is very nice. is that a samsung proprietary UI?
Its symbian s60 5th edition (Nokia n97, 5800) but it has Samsung own touchwiz built on top.
Woah! That UI is soo siick!
time to change my Omnia....oh wait. I've already abandon that....
Damn! I'd like to see the Internet browsing capabilities (browser especially), though.
For those salivating still here's the GSMArena link:

Do want!
It is to big. I like to have my cell in my pocket and there is no way this thing could fit...
What've you got, SKINNY JEANS?
Happy to see all the makers really step it up and put the heat on the iPhone. I think Apple dropped the ball with the 3G.
Does anyone know when its comes to USA and what carrier?
Call me when this comes to T-Mobile in 3 years..........
Now that screen is sweet and I like the fact that it's running S60v5.
Samsung,
Please bring it to the US with AT&T and T-Mobile US 3G bands (850/AWS 1700/1900). Thank you.
YES. AT&T especially, because then it can be used with Rogers (and soon, Bell and Telus).
Is this actually Windows Mobile? Or a custom OS?
As they say, RTFA.
Wow, can't they be more original, that looks like OSX dock and UI in the iPhone.
Huh? Did you guys see how un-intuitive the UI is? Why would one want that? I rather have a phone with buttons than dealing with that kind of UI. Look at the beginning where the user cannot seem to drag the widget? And the confusion when he/she is trying to type in text (no accelerometer?)? Plus is that how you scroll? Don't forget the laggy picture scrolling. This is the reason why Apple gets the attention. I mean does Samsung even try using their own handsets for usability testing? It's annoying that the competitors are going touch screen due to the trend, but didn't think about the UI. I'd rather have buttons than that kind of UI.
It's still in pre-Beta stage, so cut them some slack.
We have here a perfect example of why it will fail, thank you students.
oooooci mama!!!
me want! what a bad asssss!!!
Are you on to this Verizon? Better take notes because you can definatly put a big red check in the box that says "I'm Leaving" if we don't get a CDMA or LTE version of this beast!!!
Wow.,720p.Yes , it took 2 years and they finally came out with a screen larger than iPhone . Bottom line all these iphonesque phones look good n all, but will they sell,.? Took Apple 5 years to come out with the same screen as the Sony Clies. What's the argument?
