Sprint Simply Everything plan now includes mobile broadband for laptops
Sprint's Simply Everything plan's always brought a lot of bang for the buck, and it looks like it's about to include a little more everything -- you'll now be able to add mobile broadband to the package. $149 a month ain't cheap, but you won't be short of connectivity with unlimited messaging, data, and voice, GPS navigation, and 5GB of laptop internet access a month. That explains Sprint's willingness to promote the Pre's data tethering abilities -- anyone going to take the plunge?
Update: Sprint pinged us to clarify that the additional fee only covers the use of a USB stick or laptop card, not tethering. We'd still love to just carry one thing, though.

It's not really "everything" if it's limited, now is it?
It could have a little bit of everything, and still be limited. It doesn't claim unlimited, does it?
I believe that's what's implied. Why would you market "simply everything" as unlimited voice, unlimited messaging, unlimited data, and unlimited direct-connect, but only 5GB for your laptop? It just doesn't go with the other four features.
They should add this stuff to SERO.
It can be if you want it to, no one has to know.
All for either $30 or $49 a month instead of $149 ;)
With SERO, and WMWiFiRouter or PDANet, I basically get this already.
I just tether to my laptop with the SERO's unlimited data plan, and no one is the wiser.
I don't see why this is necessary either.
I have the Free Incoming 300 plan with unlimited data, messaging, and insurance for under $80.
This suffices for me. Now I just need to actually BUY WmWifiRouter. I hate that I can't just uninstall the trial and install it again :(
@Brandon L: Dude, you might be ripping yourself off with that old plan. The 450 minute Everything plan ($70) includes more, and with a $7 equipment protection you'd still only be at $77.
@ananimus3
Does that include Free Incoming? Because there are times where I'll only use about 200 outgoing minutes, but because of my free incoming, I'm able to use over 500 free incoming minutes. That'd put me at over 700 total anytime minutes.
$149 a month is crazy,
I have a BlackBerry Bold 9000 on Vodafone UK and I get 75% of what Sprint is offering for £35 a month.
Unlimited data and text messaging, email, and GPS and the only thing missing is the unlimited minutes, of which I get 600.
Is NASCAR worth $100 dollars a month or something?
NASCAR is about as worthless as an ejection seat in a helicopter.
Oh that's awesome, compare plans from different countries. Why don't you compare to other UK telecoms?
$149 a month is crazy I agree. But what is even crazier is the fact that Sprint is right...you can save hundreds over the similar offerings AT&T and Verizon have. As for me I'm going to stick with my unbelievable 4-line plan that blows away EVEN the SERO plans. Many of these wireless providers' prices are trending in the wrong direction. I think in time they may become their own worst enemies as a shift is bound to take place towards carriers like Cricket who provide a lot more for less in most cases. I also think that as more and more people shift from being employees of companies to consultants and independent contractors to these same companies (paying their own expenses) that they will become tighter with their wireless dollars.
It is unlimited to a very limited extent.
That would only be a reasonable plan if it were for 2 people...150$ for one person is a bit on the ridiculous side.
What has GPS navigation got to do with their data plan? You don't use any data while using GPS. Except maybe 5 KB for the initial A-GPS lock.
It downloads the maps, they aren't stored on the phone (unless you have a PDA phone)
How do they know when you are downloading maps and when you are downloading other stuff. They could just not say anything about it because every rational human being knows it doesn't matter to them whether you download videos, maps or use "laptop internet access", it's all just bytes to them. My provider just charges all of these as "Data transfer".
I love how they invent new "features" and then add them to the package for free.
They are referring to the Sprint GPS app. Use of other GPS apps is always free except for data.
I think this is kind of being misreported. From what Sprints website leads you to believe this is not tethering as you get a Novatel usb modem. I started seeing ads for a promotion yesterday online.

They also have a new unlimited family plan which I might be looking at.
btw, they only charge you ten a month to tether.
Sorry, this was the link I was looking for.

Sweet, now my laptop wont work all of the time, just like my phone!
Nope. I've got a good plan that I've had for almost 6 years now (including 5gb of tethered browsing on my phone - Treo 755p). Of course, when the Pre comes out, all that could change.
So it's an extra $50 to get that? I don't understand. Simply Everything is only $99.99.
Their EVDO package for laptops costs $60 alone, so it saves $10.
I am a college student and I still live off my mom's cellphone plan. We have a family sprint data package and it only costs us $160 a month. this includes unlimited data (5GB/month?), unlimited texts, 1500 minutes to share, the night a weekends, and all that stuff. That is for 3 lines (my sister included) and the deal couldn't be sweeter for us.
Yeah, I'm gonna be heading to that same plan when my verizon contract runs out. Data for 3 phones on verizon would be $30 per phone, which sucks. I only hope that sprint's 3G coverage in my area is decent.
Why would I want that? I have unlimited tethering through my Blackberry Curve already, for free.
I'll just wait for the back door app to come out, a la PDAnet. I am using it right now. thats 2.4Mbps down ~1Mpbs up. 30 dollar one time fee, or 50 a month.
Gotta let my phone download some 10Gig h264 torrents now.
I hope your data account gets flagged/canceled--if you are being serious.
US is expensive, unlimited texts, internet (with use of skype) and 600 mins a month for £20 here in the UK (T-mob).
I have a separate USB dongle from 3 for £7.50 a month (which they paid me £30 to take in the first place) with a 7 gig allowance per month (have to sweet talk the call centre workers to give you better deals than they print).
Seriously who pays $149 = £104 a month for that?
still to much, who here has 10 phones?
What happened to Sprint's $99 simply everything plan?
Are they jacking it way up or did Engadget make a boo-boo?
Nevermind. I read into it more. I got it. It's not an error on Engadget's part. Sounds more like a business decision error on Sprint's part.
It seems pretty stupid to me. I don't think $50 a month is a reasonable price so that you can use mobile broadband up to only 5gb per month. The apps that allow you to tether in a more secretive way clearly are a better solution. PDAnet! Yay!
I thought Sprint was on the right course with their $99 simply everything plan, but this is pretty sad. Unfortunately it's not like ATT or Verizon or Tmobile are doing things drastically better.
The Simply Everything plan doesn't include phone as modem.
Now, like its been mentioned, there are ways around that, but until now, it was never officially supported by Sprint.
Yeah, it only saves you $10 in the end over their otherwise $60/mo data card add-on. I'm yet to feel inspired over the pricing battle to make 3G networks the new wifi. Then again, the towers are prolly already pretty burdened.
Some people don't seem to be getting this... its two separate devices under one plan for $150.
For $99, you get Simply Everything on your phone.
For $60 usually, you get the mobile broadband for a USB/Expresscard/whatever modem.
For $150 you get both together.
The Simply Everything plan is still the same price, you just get a discount if you're also getting a mobile broadband card.
That is an astronomical price, a similar plan in the UK would be around £50/mo
Whoa! I wanna get that straight... You can honestly get a data card for a laptop PLUS unlimited minutes, texts, MMS, "TV" and data for a phone there for ~70 USD? Sakes, our cell network IS way behind the times.
(...and navigation service)
got an instict free after rebate in december,
my bill is 59.99 and i have limited anytime unlimited nights weekend, text what have you.
i tether anytime im not home. very easily done, there are ways to get your codes without even talking sprint into giving you access to it if you look in the right places, will handle bluetooth or usb tether.
2 of my friends hopped on so this is actually the first time that ive been paid to use a phone
there is NO WAY IN HELL i would pay 150 for a service that is in essence just handling computing data rather than voice...
thats like telling me i have to use heinze ketchup on hot dogs but if i want to use it on a hamburger itll be an extra 20 bucks...
Tethering is only $40 on EVDO devices. So if you wish to tether, its cheaper.
But Engadget wouldn't want to do research, considering how much they hate on Sprint.
not sure what the benefit of carrying only one device is when it comes to tethering vs aircard. Sure its a little more weight, but when you're using a laptop to connect to the internet, surely a 5 oz aircard isnt going to break your back.
Also, taking calls while surfing the net becomes easier.
This is a good deal, Sprint is giving you something that no one else offers, so let do some math here. Let say you have an iphone with att and an unlimited plan with unlimited txt. Your cost is 150.00 a month for just the phone, that doesn’t have turn by turn gps. Now with this spring plan you get unlimited messaging, minutes, txt, Sprint TV, navi, and a broadband card. Sounds like a good value to me. Let’s look at Verizon. For 150 a month you get unlimited minutes, txt, and PDA data and ...... that’s it. If you want navi its ten dollars extra and a broadband card is 59.99 for 5 GB. Trust me sprint is the best deal in wireless. For the average consumer this is a huge win. I use att my self but I have an employee plan so my pricing is not average.
sorry *Sprint*
PDA net + SERO is the best offer they ever had. All carriers need to be reminded that people are restricting their spending, not expanding it. I would love to have an air card but why when i can use my 755p and never get dinged a bit for going over 5 gig. pardon me as I return to my netflix...
WOW i use my blackberry 8330 and im using it to send this post its UNLIMITED!!!!! i gues sprint dont kno im using it :-) but yea for120.58 a month (with my new york state taxes ) i get unlimited EVERYTHING granted i dont get some of the sprint tv chaneles but who in there right mind would shit there and look at a 4 inch screan all day
