Apple's 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro gets unboxed
We had heard that quite a few early birds were receiving shipping notifications, and sure enough, Apple's 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro has left the docks. One proud owner has even taken the time to host up a handful of unboxing shots as proof, and while nothing here is out of the ordinary for those acquainted with Apple's newest 15-incher, the actual machine just looks a touch longer and wider for some reason. Maybe it's just our eyes.

It's about time... Engadget, you should send me one
Jealous!
Recession antidote anyone?
OMG! It's like every other laptop that comes in a box! But this box is white...
Hardly– should me "every other" with packaging like that...
Apple's packaging is a work of art.
John,
That's Apple's way of trying to make you feel more secure (i.e. deceive you) about paying $1000 more than you should have for one of their fruity systems.
@Hamidxa
/Facepalm
We know you're a blind hater and not even joking, so why don't you just go shoo to some other story? Or is it your life's mission to claim that it's all in the packaging? Remember, more views on the page = more stories on that subject. If you hate Apple, then just go troll some other board.
Envy makes people say stupid things.

Can you post this on all of the stories your fellow Apple fans feel a need to troll on a daily basis?
Alright dudes. You may be paying more for a laptop with similar specs, but still, Apple's packaging is just beyond gorgeous. At least it makes you feel as if your purchase was warranted. And I still believe it up until this day =) (eyes dazed).
....except that the packaging is 1/x the size, x being an element of the real numbers, greater than or equal to 2.
@Look_Around_You
With pleasure. They annoy me even more than the other trolls. Egh. Sometimes I get the impression that they're trying to troll in order for people to hate Apple.
And I have actually said that to them (or something along those lines at least) but they're inane idiots. Best thing is just to not reply I guess. But, since we all can't do that (Myself included), I'd like to apologize for their behaviour and promise that we're trying to find a way to replace their asshole of a mouth with something that actually makes sense when air comes out of it.
And Engadget, why can't you ban them or something? It's really annoying when the nth incarnation of friggin' iEye pops up and starts spewing forth shit.
It's very petty but I feel somewhat underwhelmed when I see it.
Is it just me, or is the site that the links links to down?
It's been Engadgeted.
SOMEBODY SAY "RECESSION ANTIDOTE" ? COOL I'M IN !!!!
Just tell me how long the battery really last ?
Take it apart!
will it blend?
Where the heck did you get a 17 inch blender?
I will make one.... I need a v12 engine first though...

It's only V8 though.
Looks like the links are down. I am looking forward on hearing some real world numbers on that battery.
i want this macbook plzzzz
Whoa! What a deal!
/rolls eyes
it is a deal!!
/gouges his eyes
in 4 recession antidote!
Remove the optical drive and give it a colemak keyboard, and you have, very nearly, the perfect laptop.
Dude, the last time Apple tried removing an optical drive, everybody fa-lipped out.
There will never be a optical drive-less macbook pro. Not in the next 5 years at least.
I wasn't one of those people. Optical drives are obsolete; use that space for a bigger battery.
A bigger battery that you can't change that is.
Ok how about when you need to install the OS? How bout watching a movie? Or do you just think that optical drives are a bag of hurt...
It can boot over USB. *shrug* Just install your OS off of a flash drive.
I rip all my movies to .iso files, keep them on my hard drive, and watch them with VLC.
Watching a DVD from the actual disc is slow, noisy as heck, and consumes more power than I feel is acceptable.
@mike
Well, what about those people who have Airs?
Do you see them revolting on the streets, complaining that they can't install the OS or watch a movie?
Ahh, the power of wireless networking, USB optical drives and DVD ripping software.. I don't go around with DVDs while I travel. Hell no. I just use Handbrake or whatever to rip it to my HD. People barely use their optical drive. I would agree with a bigger battery. 12 hours? Yes please.
i want this. i could sell it and buy a ridiculous gaming desktop, as well as a nice netbook for class notes.
I unboxed my 15 inch unibody and nearly had a religious experience when I saw the startup for the new OSX.....
Why does it have a siver bezel instead of black around the screen?
Because the buyer chose the non-glossy display option.
I was really expecting to see one of those boxing gloves on a spring when the box was opened. I thought that an overpriced laptop was a joke. I guess there really is a folls market.
fools*
When you take your laptop absolutely everywhere, as I do, it warrants a more significant monetary investment.
Does a higher price tag equal mor productivity. I don't think so.
It certainly can. Some people need apps that don't run on linux based operating systems, making their only decent option Mac OS X. If they want portability, power, and a good screen resolution and battery life under OS X, they're going to need a MacBook Pro.
(or verrrrry carefully selected hardware and an EFI bootloader, but most people don't want to bother with all that..)
It's probably best to get one refurbished.
Is mac osx linux based?
@Dustin
No, it's not
OS X is unix, and Linux is unix-like, so they have many of the same advantages.
Yes Dustie, OSx is linux based. FreeBSD.
Sorry I was wrong and I admit it just this one time - It's not linux-based. It's based on FreeBSD, which, like linux, is unix-like, but not unix. Open source, "free", but not literally linux.
I am going to make a new OS. I am going to take something absolutely free, add some wallpapers, maybe change some colors and have a really cool slogan that says "Think different". Maybe charge double for my hardware. Censor any negative comments on my website. Make commercials complaining about another OS but don't say why mine is better. Call the new HD standard a bag of hurt. Make a cell phone that cannot ever be dropped. Forget about copy and paste. Forget about flash and media text messaging. Tell everyone to buy my hardware because you are different and make sure that every one of my customers have the EXACT same laptop. What do you think? Will I be rich?
You might be rich, if you did it all right. Also, what do you mean, "take something that is absolutely free"? If you released a computer that ran just FreeBSD, or Linux, without spending the money to develop a GUI, you'd definitely fail. OSX adds value to the "free" stuff on which it's based, by offering a very good GUI (and of course the rock solid stability of a unix-like substrate). You might not like it, you might be bitter and unhappy about that OSX GUI, but a lot of people will appreciate it and would buy it - e.g., apple computers. So, when you talk about just taking "something that is absolutely free" and throwing it on a computer, realize that you'd not have OSX in that case. You'd have a command-line driven system that for the masses is not at all easy to use. You'd have the equivalent ease of use of MS-Dos, linux, unix, or freebsd. All of which are command line driven and require additional "point and click" GUIs to run on top of them before they are appealing on a mass scale.
I'm no fanboy - I have both, and I appreciate both. OSX and Apple do charge premiums, but they're just so damned fun . . . .
Don't be a hater . . . . but please be a Good Speller.
