LG plans Android phone by June, two more by end of year
As is so often the case, details are scarce here, but Engadget Spanish got word from LG that, as expected, they're planning to put out an Android phone by June, and two more of 'em by the end of the year. 2009 is certainly looking to be the year of the Android, and it seems like every month that goes by without Windows Mobile 6.5 on the market gives truly finger-friendly OSes like Android a chance to shine -- now to see what a manufacturer that isn't HTC can make of it.

better have a physical keyboard.
Better have a huge screen with high resolution so we don't need physical keyboard.
looks like he borrowed his father's suit
and borrowed his little brothers tie
What can we say? Crisis!
At first it looked like he was flipping the bird to android lol
Without details, this is just worthless talk.
Who is that presenting? Former NJ governor Jim McGreevey?
He looks like Obama.
Obama was my first thought too. haha
Like everything else LG says: I'll believe it when I see it.
I sure hope LG wont charge their smart phone fees on this one or bog down the hardware. I picked up an LG Dare in November, but i may be willing to buy an android powered phone for $300 and keep my current contract.
so i hear Sprint is getting an Android phone... yeah right!
The presenter looks kind of like the green Android guy
Vince from ShamWow??
Better NOT have a physical keyboard
If they're planning 3 phones, then I would hope at least one will have a keyboard. Why not make everyone happy?
gay tie
Bring on the iPhone clones
Dear God no.
iPhone = a bag of hurt, or dirt if you prefer.
Time to bury that dated piece of tech and move on.
As towards the remark to what makers that aren't HTC can make of it don't expect much from LG. They don't have their own OS to push therefore they don't have software engineers, now yes it is true that they can always hire and what not but then again you need engineers that are familiar with the development process, the tools that they're known for using, and all the other goodies and pre-requisites needed to make a spectacular phone. If HTC ever goes out of the hardware business they can easily jump in and start selling a mobile OS because they have over and over again better'd WinMo by a long shot from TouchFlo 3D to a full mask over the OS to make it way more usable and lighter for all.
It needs a keyboard
...and a floppy drive
I liked the part where you tried to compare tactile feedback to old technology like a flopy drive. I mean, things like muscle memory are millions of years old. Who needs the ability to type without looking?
@James Barsby
Hey do you want some of my floppy drive?
which isn't floppy
also, it's not a drive either.
What the hell is that big black round thing.......... A Microphone.... god i thought we passed that stage where we hide our faces behind extra large mics
I really want Android to be successful - and I'd rather buy open source products. I was kind of hoping to have an Android phone already. I would have bought the G1, but battery life seems to be so hit or miss that I'd rather not risk it. It seems odd to me that while they release a ton of winmo phones at the conference, there's nothing but talk and rumors about Android. I thought other companies had been working on this for a while. I'd love to see how long the production cycle for a smart phone is and how much lead time they need. How long was Palm working on the Pre for instance?
I've had the G1 for a while now and I can say the battery life is fine. As long as you aren't connected to wifi/bluetooth/gps and loading a billion webpages and playing games constantly, the battery lasts quite a while.
The year of Android?? It's going to be a small low-spec cheap looking phone meant to be "Everybody's smartphone", even if u can't afford a real one.
I guess Engadget had a story with the LG Android prototype. Even uglier than the gPhones.
I'm really disappointed by the way manufactures have handled Android. But I have some faith left in NVidia...
Yeah Android might get on the cheap phones that you get for free on contract, but in a way that is kind of necessary for it to succeed. That is the way the platform can really grow and it will help expand the number of smartphone users and thus the number of web surfing phones (which is Google's ultimate goal). You can't exactly have all the phones being the highest spec phones or the Android platform wouldn't have room to grow explosively. Google already made it clear the platform wasn't just about making one phone, but multiple types of phones (or even other products) so that includes the cheaper ones.
We will have to make do with some phones we would never buy and just look forward to the ones that we are in the market for.
Looks like he's trying to blow away the black cotton ball from floating into his mouth.
I've got a real bad feeling that this 'year of the Android' is going to be like 'year of Linux on desktop'.
I didn't know the ShamWOW guy also sold LG products.
Why does Engadget love to love Android, but can barely bring themselves to say barely anything positive about Microsoft?
So who will be the typical user/consumer of the android phones? The customers who don't care what OS their phone has, as long as they get the phone for free?
So how likely are will these people be to buy accessories and/or applications? If they arent' buying apps, where's the motivation for devs to build upon this platform?
How many apps do you guess the typical Android user will purchase?
Will consumers ask for Android/Google phones by name, or just take them because they're free from the carriers?
Why would it matter how many apps people purchase? It's not Apple so you can get free applications much easier.
Personally I have a Blackberry and I haven't had to buy an app yet.
