Meizu M8 defies the odds and officially goes on sale - again

Word on the street has it that the Meizu's M8 -- that vaporous iPhone killer from the east -- is now officially on sale, as of February 18. For real. Wait, you ask -- wasn't it available last week sometime? Well, yes and no. Apparently, the unit we've seen making the rounds was a beta version -- if you slapped down your $440-ish dollars on that one, you got something with "a fair amount of problems to be ironed out," according to DAP Review. The site, whose Chinese-to-English translator is apparently functioning better than ours, goes on to point out that while the test units had WiFi enabled, the final production version does not. A strange decision, sure, but this is a tale fraught with strange decisions. And danger. And excitement and glamor. By the way -- we just hit up the official Meizu site, and the 16GB version of this device is "out of stock" -- probably due to the rapturous reception the unit's received all over the world.

first
the only thing your first at is failing.
your mom was first. then your sister... then your daughter.
perish.
(...when she's 18 >.
as for the WIFI thing, wifi cannot be enable on machine, in China. So if iPhone goes to China, there is no wifi.
...hopefully the tale ends soon. (Caveat Emptor Bitches!)
Its 2:40 somewhere...
Yeah, Thursday January 29th.
@DrAwesome
Where exactly is January 29th? I can't seem to find it on my map.
Uh oh, look at Jokes Malone over here. Awesome comeback dude, right up there with your initial "joke." Try this one on for size: How about pulling the map out of your ass? Might be easier to read.
School's out, tool.
lol, jokes malone.....
@ Dr. Awesome
Wow! I'm impressed. You really got me with that whole pull it out of my ass bit. You, sir/madam, need to wear a helmet.
Now I'm just waiting for you to quote some Guy Ritchie or Quentin Tarantino.
BTW, I'm a hippie, not a tool.
lol, helmet.....
Try again scumbag, ALL hippies are tools by definition. Also, why did you think I was going to quote Guy Ritchie or Tarantino? Is that what all the guys you wanted to be like did? You know, the ones who didn't have to adopt some made up "hippie" persona in order to gain acceptance and feel like they "belong" (amongst other dirtball hippies mind you.) Or is it that you're not capable of of being clever yourself so you assume that anytime anyone else is they must have heard it in a movie?
I'll now give you the floor so you can make more AWESOME quasi-4:20 jokes that no one thinks are funny.
PS: Patchouli smells like ass and the Phish sucks.
lol, quasi-4:20.....
@Dr. Awesome (the wink must be implied)
OK, here it goes. Its probably going to anger you that you and I agree. Phish does suck and patchouli does stink.
You obviously suffer from memory loss, because you are the person who calls everyone a hippie and quotes movies like Pulp Fiction and Snatch.

"ALL hippies are tools by definition."
I just looked up the definitions of hippie and tool, and neither references the other. Saying "by definition" doesn't make you sound more intelligent.
What all of this boils down to is that you made a mistake trying to be funny, and someone made a wise crack at your mistake. Its all in fun. You don't have to get your feelings hurt.
lol, and the trophy goes to Mr. Ford....
(sorry Dr.Awesome... you were funny too tho)
What sucks so bad is that this is an obvious iclone that has taken years longer to be released than other iclones like the HiPhone and throughout that development time, it hasn't gotten any better.
$449?
I got a iPhone 4GB over a year ago for $300 and that phone is still valued over $275 because its a great value if your focus isn't on using it to store more than 2 Gigs of music. I use mine mostly for videos that I download on MXTUBE.
And then the iPhone 3G, despite its battery life improves on the data delivery - yet still costs less than the Meziu if you buy on contract.
Meizu = FAIL.
a little late
Niiiiice background o_O
I agree. Nice background
Agreed the chick on the phon ei spretty hot.
and some perv at Meizu's advertising sector is either oblivious that they are using his phone in the ad, or he planted it...
the chick in the background is leah dizon.
how can i tell without seeing her face?
because i have the pic on my computer.. god i'm lonely.
It took THIS long to mention the background??
Ok so who designs/engineers better phones china?japan?USA?
This phone is obviously
"Designed in California , Assembled in China"
I would say South Korea because of Samsung, and LG, Finland because of Nokia, Taiwan because of HTC, United States because of Apple, Palm, Motorola, and Google's Android, and I guess Canada because of Blackberry.
But your question is based on personal opinion, so like I said, South Korea, Finland, Taiwan, U.S., and Canada.
Android is a platform/os, not a phone.
That's why I put GOOGLE'S ANDROID, but I guess I should of said whichever phone brand(s) is making Android.
Maybe it is time to mock the Palm Pre, or maybe just maybe they could do something more original this time around.
iPhone killer - qu'est-ce que c'est?
Run, run, run, run
run, run-
Run awayyy....
Ce n'est pas possible...
LOL at "And danger".
En danger you mean
The remove of wifi is due to the stupid law in China
could you elaborate please?
All cellphones in China (if it is sold in legal way and confirmed by the certain department of the government)are not allowed to have any wifi function. It is also the reason why many people in China prefer to spend a lot money to buy smuggling cellphones from other country even if they are returned, repaired, refurbished etc... and expensive.
That's why there are many cellphones has a special China Mainland Edition in which the wifi unit is either removed or disabled. The reason for Chinese government to do this may includes, but not limited to, several points like WAPI vs WiFi, TD-SCDMA, easy network access control, protect the benefit of those company like China Mobile(GPRS is still very expensive for Chinese, and expensive GPRS can drive people to use cheap sms instead of IM on cellphone, another prove is that most IM software on cellphone in China are designed only to access the network via GPRS or CDMA but not wifi even if the cellphone has wifi.)
I think Meizu may release some other edition of M8 if they really want to sell it outside China and they are not out of business.
Run, run, run , run,
run, run-
Run awayyy....
It was meant as an answer to Zak
Jeez, Engadgets reply system sucks more than Meizu R&D department.
Gotta love the Google auto-translate off their website:
"2 years of concentrated research and development and strive to promote, MEIZU M8 in January 15, 2009 has been made of industrial and information issued by the Ministry into the network license."
how much is engadget being paid by Meizu? The whole reason Meizu exists is b/c of the crazy coverage engadget gives. For every 5 iphone articles there are atleast 3 about Meizu. Engadget needs to stop supporting blatant copying!
Engadget I can't believe you can't research, the WIFI hardware will still be there, it will just be software disabled, and easily re-enabled, this is so they can sell the phone in China so they don't get into shit with the authorities.
Generally, I'd scoff at remarks about the female models on Engadget.
But this time it's Leah Dizon. Excellent choice.
No.
Having bought one in China, I can say it's a great phone but not without its faults. Meizu are slowly working on them and releasing a couple of firmware updates a month at the moment, which fix and improve various things. In its current state it's not an iPhone beater, unfortunately!
I was originally going to comment on the look of the phone, but the wallpaper's got my eyes glued.
o0o0o I'd like to finger that. Wonder how good the music player is. I want one. Kinda
The M8 is about $350 in China, not "$440-ish".
