Remember what LG did at CES last year? Those crafty sons of guns
showed off a shockingly decent-looking concept watch phone that ended up
seeing a production announcement exactly one year later. Not to be outdone by its crosstown rival, Samsung came to MWC this year with a timeline showing its
nearly decade-long history of designing and selling watch phones -- and interestingly, the rightmost entry in the timeline was dated "2009." We couldn't get any solid information on the GT-S1100, but like LG's GD910, the device features a full touchscreen, Bluetooth, and a speakerphone (probably a good thing for a phone you can't put up to your ear without getting a lot of odd looks). 'Course, in all likelihood, this is just another chapter in the book of Samsung heartbreak -- it'll either never see production or get released by precisely one carrier in precisely one country, then promptly fade into oblivion -- but it's looking awfully production-friendly. Same time, same place next year, Sammy -- just make sure you guys bring something more than a dummy behind a glass case this time, k?
Is there any Engadget reader that actualy try a watch phone that could comment on the usefulness of that type of device?
Tho I somewhat agree with you about the silly idea and how its not very useful...
It would be nice owning something like this, just less stuff to carry around
I dont know about you guys, but I friggin hate carrying stuff around in my pockets! (Keys/Phone/Change/Gum/Wallet/etc)... I even have to keep certain items in certain pockets :/
Anyway, my point is this would just make things easier :D Especially when your the type that likes to keep a phone simply for making calls... not texting/pictures/games
and also, its about time a big name company like Samsung comes out into this market, think we're finally in that age where we can actually do something with Cellphone watches
Yo! turn the watch on!
I can tel you that I brought a cheap watch phone from off of ebay about a year or so ago just to try out the concept and it is indeed quite good.
Although there are some points on my watch phone that I would alter in the way it works there are also some good points too.
I can only tell how my own works:
Making and receiving calls is good although with mine I find it is better to use a bluetooth earpiece to hear the person on the other end as full volume is not very loud.
Ring and text tones are loud enough to hear when you have incoming calls and texts, but you can also use vibrate like a normal mobile phone with the tones and you sure do know when something is coming through unlike if you have you r normal mobile in your pocket it may only tickle your leg (so the vibrate on my watch phone seems strong)
Text messaging, my watch phone uses a handwriting recognition, this works ok although could confirm what letter etc. you write quicker.
My watch phone has all the extras a normal mobile has like calculator, voice recording, conversions, alarms, etc.
Although I have not yet used a normal mobile phone with a touch screen, comparing my watch phone with my own normal mobile phone (Samsung D900i) the watch phone is just like using my normal phone but with a touch screen.
If you want to know anything else just ask.
how long can you wear these wrist cell phones before you need to switch to prosthetic ?
Who's worn a watch since cell phones? Honestly, theirs no need for watches now.
I bought a watch because I didnt have to recharge it nightly just to check the time..... And it was shiny.....
Many people find watches more than a "thing to tell time on". Omega, Patek Philippe, Breitling, Rolex, Jaeger Le Coultre... are investments, art, craftsmanship, etc.
Or on the other side: G-Shock, Swatch, etc are fashion statements.
Pulling a phone out of your pocket to tell the time tells something else to lots of folks.
I agree with blueangel00100 but some people still find it useful to have a watch. Looking at your watch is normally more time efficient than dragging out your phone from your pocket.
I just say "TIME" loud, and my phone reads the current time for me from the pocket.
It also doubles as a shield if anyone ever attacks you with a sword or mace.
Like all other samsungs phones it'll have a slow UI, unbearable text input, drop calls at all times even with full signal and suffer from lack of address book space. Personally I'd rather wait for the LG.
Always fancied a watch phone dealy. Maybe a bit toooooo massive, otherwise decent looking.
What happens when someone wants to borrow your phone to make a call? You may look like a knob standing there with your hand on someones ear.
HAHAHAHAHAHA...i rarely post but picturing that just made me laugh. thanks.
You tell them "No."
I don't think I could/would actually own/use one of these things, but I would be really interested in watching someone that has one -- just to see whether they look like a tool talking into their wrist. More than likely I imagine people would go the Bluetooth headset option for phone calls. If that's the case, then I would still rather have a phone I could pull out and play with -- instead of that huge Wonder Twins bracelet.
"KITT, get me out here."
"Sarah, Casey, I think they're onto me!"
even if i wanted this, my girly thin wrists will refuse
Have a close look at the reflection in the phone's screen. Is it what I think it is? :)
In the reflection you can see my girlfriend showing what she would be ready to do to get that watchphone.
it's nice, but it might suffer from scratches since it won't be protected so much... especially to the more active people out there.
i am totally drooling over this right now.
this will be way cooler than what i do now...wear my iphone on my arm with the sports armband in the clubs and attempt to write txt msgs with my bicep in front of my face.
You might not look "way cooler" but I would argue that you'll look like less of a douche.
Yes, the watch phones are reality from year 2007, nameds like Topodi, Ionveo or Tedacos ofert its. LG and Samsung are more quality process for make its, but the price is more! The GD-910 from LG are price from USD$ 1400 and Topodi 007+ only USD$ 350. The future is now!
I bought one, Tedacos RJX2GSM, which has support for two cards, after almost a month of use, I'm happy to say that in general, but neither do I use it every day, just when I go to any party or event as the vibration function calls me alert and is quick to respond! I wonder how some people speak, it is very easy, you just bring the phone to watch the face, or turn the power of the speaker and talk to the front, it needs no enhancement, the bluetooth is comfortable when you drive, you can speak and I am not afraid of fines, in the end, I liked my experience count.
