Thievery at MWC! Telstra exec's HTC with WinMo 6.5 stolen
It's not clear if Telstra chief Sol Trujillo was sporting an HTC Touch Pro2 or a Touch Diamond2 at MWC this week, but one thing's for sure: he's doesn't have it anymore. A pickpocket apparently lifted the handset off another Teslsta exec who was checking it out today -- and making matters worse, it was running an early build of Windows Mobile 6.5. Oops. Of course, we doubt Microsoft is too concerned -- 6.5 ROMs are leaking all over the place anyway -- but it looks like Sol's picking up Ballmer's tab at the bar tonight.[Thanks, Boy Genius]

the theif will do everyone a favor if he posted the rom image dump. there are somany things the cooker could use from this
ZSX @ Feb 18th 2009 4:22PM
I was about to say this! Is it bad if instead of feeling sympathetic my first thought is ROM dump?
JAmerican @ Feb 18th 2009 5:48PM
Na it was Steve Jobs. He wanted to know how the hell Windows Mobile got copy and paste to work.
Ry @ Feb 18th 2009 2:39PM

If he had an iPhone it would have alerted him when stolen, crappy 6.5.
absinthe party @ Feb 18th 2009 2:47PM
Wait... how could the iPhone have alerted him that it was stolen? Is there some sort of Apple trickery going on that I'm not keen to?
Nomi @ Feb 18th 2009 2:50PM
You need to jailbreak so you can track it via GPS. What someone doesn't realize is that you don't have to jailbreak winmo 6.5 to do the same...
absinthe party @ Feb 18th 2009 2:54PM
Well, yeah, you can track it, but how can it alert you? I mean, you don't exactly have a device for it to report back to, unless you carry around two iPhones at any given time, right?
Sam @ Feb 18th 2009 2:57PM
I got low ranked because you can't understand sarcasm? Pah.

non iPhone nor WinMo owner.

"You need to jailbreak so you can track it via GPS. What someone doesn't realize is that you don't have to jailbreak winmo 6.5 to do the same..."
Well duh... Of course you wouldn't have to jailbreak WM6.5 to do the same. If it was stolen you just have to wait in the nearest skip and wait for the thief to throw it away along with your empty wallet.
KilgoreTrout @ Feb 18th 2009 3:02PM
All Win Mobile telefones can download (for free) and use Cell Phone Tracker which will alert you with an e mail and a google maps page marking tha location of your phone.
New beta version allow you to see also where the phone has been in the last 24 hours.
ProfessorDex @ Feb 18th 2009 3:02PM
You got low ranked because it was a stupid comment.
You shouldn't need instructions to know when someone is being sarcastic.
Sam @ Feb 18th 2009 3:07PM
I do find it quite comical that my blatant obviously sarcastic, with tongue-firmly-in-cheek, swipe at fan boys has been taken seriously.
Thank you all for brightening my day.
ProfessorDex @ Feb 18th 2009 3:22PM
That's not what's blatantly obvious here.....
Hamidxa @ Feb 18th 2009 3:45PM
Sam,
You're attempt at trolling backfired in light of the fact that WinMo devices have had this feature before iPhone's were even a twinkle in hipsters eyes.
Ahmedz @ Feb 18th 2009 2:45PM
Yoink!
Daniel @ Feb 18th 2009 2:47PM
sweet that answers my question wheter or not 6.5 would be on the new touch pro.
Nomi @ Feb 18th 2009 2:51PM
I guess it didn't help when HTC said that the Pro2 will be getting a free 6.5 upgrade...
Daniel @ Feb 18th 2009 2:55PM
i never saw that post.
KMAN @ Feb 18th 2009 2:49PM
if he had a BlackBerry they could have remotely wiped the device
el Capitan @ Feb 18th 2009 2:56PM
Nice. How would I do that?
doubleu606 @ Feb 18th 2009 3:47PM
you can do that too with WinMo, provided it's syncing to an Exchange server...
gsvnet @ Feb 18th 2009 4:08PM
That's not limited to a BlackBerry. You can also remotely wipe a Windows Mobile device that is connected to Exchange. But even that wouldn't help in this case. It's mainly for removing personal data, and once it's done the device will still have a 6.5 ROM loaded on it.
369EkO @ Feb 18th 2009 2:49PM
I knew something was gona get jacked
therealmusashi @ Feb 18th 2009 2:53PM
If someone really wanted to pull a memorable MWC prank, they could have lifted some non-Winmo prototype, installed WinMo, then replaced it.
Quikboy @ Feb 19th 2009 2:07AM
Now that would most likely be an actual improvement :)
Mobius_1 @ Feb 18th 2009 2:56PM
Seeing how disappointing 6.5 seems to be, there are a number of phones I'd steal over that HTC. Maybe he's gonna flash it with Android?
Sam @ Feb 18th 2009 2:58PM
I believe the thief had some papers that needed to be weighed down.
thedesolate1 @ Feb 18th 2009 3:05PM
I think some 1337 haxors took it to do inhuman experiments on it. Including trying to stuff android into it.
Quikboy @ Feb 19th 2009 2:02AM
"Seeing how disappointing 6.5 seems to be"
So you've seen the finalized version already? Not too disappointing, consider it's more optimized for touch, and the built-in internet browser doesn't really suck too much anymore.
Raphael Salgado @ Feb 18th 2009 3:01PM
Oh, those guys at XDA Developers are just so slick sometimes...
I'll be truly impressed if they yet find a way to get at least Windows Mobile 5.0 on my i-mate JAM.
European @ Feb 18th 2009 4:13PM
I think you answered your question yourself....you have an I-MATE, dude!
They are XDA developers! Thus HTC built stuff.
oh well...you probably didnt even read the first post on their website either since you were asking...
npChaos @ Feb 19th 2009 10:27AM
That was a useless comment Euro. The imate Jam is a rebranded HTC Wizard, which you actually can flash up to 6, so I'd head over there and check it out.
CraigJ @ Feb 18th 2009 3:04PM
that's gonna sting cause Ballmer drinks a lot, and then there's always the broken chairs to deal with.
technology420 @ Feb 21st 2009 6:42AM
I can see him now, wasted, arm around generic htc exec, : "Developers, Developers, Developers"
Assuming he quotes his viral appearances when he's drunk.
bandigolo @ Feb 18th 2009 3:07PM
"stolen" is PR speak for "lost it because I'm a careless douche"

Jordan @ Feb 18th 2009 3:59PM
Did anyone read the actual article? The writing is ridiculous, e.g. "runs Internet Explorer 6 in full fidelity".
invincible @ Feb 18th 2009 9:46PM
The Daily Telegraph is one of News Corp's garbage tabloid newspapers. I wouldn't be expecting too much from it.
ToyandMe @ Feb 18th 2009 4:12PM
The "theft" is just a ploy to make people think WM6.5 is worth stealing. It ain't gonna fly.
dodo @ Feb 18th 2009 4:32PM
It wasn't me, I swear!
Mobius_1 @ Feb 18th 2009 4:48PM
Nor me!

Hopefully he got a Pro2. That phone is a beast.
