Android Dev Phone 1 gets in on the Cupcake action early, deemed to be a little undercooked
Admit it, you want some Cupcake, but you're afraid of ditching the physical keyboard altogether. Good news for those of you who've snagged an Android Dev Phone 1, because your wish may be our command. The guys at Make have the lowdown on how to flash Cupcake to the device and experience that on-screen keyboard in all its glory. The hacked OS certainly wasn't ready for primetime, and that hotly-anticipated soft keyboard was still a little buggy -- but there is some hope for using the phone with one hand. We'll bet Google / T-Mobile keep this one in the oven a bit longer until it's ready to take on the masses, but at least we're seeing some fresh baked goodness on something other than the Magic. There's video of the Macguyver'd OS in action after the break.

The baking references are getting a little old on these Cupcake articles...
indeed.
Exactly what I was thinking. You gotta take it down a notch.
Agreed, they're overdone.
Yes, I would like to see some shortening of the baking references.
Yes, I would like to see some shortening in the baking references.
There, fixed.
I kinda dislike google for picking a name that silly. I might be alone, but I'd rather upgrade my OS with SP1 rather then with cupcake.
That's the "codename" for the update. The official "name" will be Android OS 1.5 (RC40?)
I agree... !!
Happy cupcaking......... ooh how do we cut the cake when it's in a cup?
One of these things is a lie.
You just copy it and paste it with icing. Something the iPhone can't do.
jamerican,
because you cant jailbreak an iphone right? please stfu fan boy.
you cant put a regular 3.5 headset without a stupid usb dongle in the g1. Now thats something definately the iphone cant do.
you should try and make statements like that which are true, rather then deny jailbreaking doesnt exist.
As long as they make it chocolate chip, FIRST
aww dammit =[, keyboard looks alot like my iphone's!
FAIL.... -1 internet
well there's so many ways, a proper touch keyboard can look, but at the very least they could have replaced the del key with backspace
@Jamil
Thats how it looks on the G1's hard keyboard.
Is it really hacking when it's an open source operating system?
That's right... making Android better before the Magic or G2 ships to the U.S.
kind of... if by G2 i mean G1
They didn't seem to show if the HTC Magic has a tilt detector, they didn't show it having a horizonthal on-screen keyboard. Horizonthally, the keyboard would be more than double the size, so it would be much easier to type some text fast.
Thats not the magic. Its the dream/g1
*cue Chef's love makin voice*
You seem a little underdone, Cupcake. Maybe it's time for some love bakin with MastrCake...
The source for cupcake doesn't include some important apps like gmail because of proprietary issues. This means that putting it onto a device is a little pointless for now.
I compiled and loaded it onto my ADP1 a few weeks ago to discover this fact... it had the onscreen keyboard and the OS felt glitchy...
I would have dealt with the bugginess for awhile to try it out but I couldn't deal with the loss of the google apps.
I just want Flash support!
Short on cake mix huh? I don't know, but both the iPhone OS and webOS look far more sleek than the droid.
I have an iPhone. Its OS sucks. Closed-source, proprietary and extremely limited by Crapple. I'm selling it on ebay (it's at $200 right now, in less than a day) and have purchased a G1.
i love cupcakes !
tellin you now, cupcake wont be released till around the release of a G2, so the G1 owners can feel the love to
I love my G1, but I really want the Cupcake update!
Does this only work on dev phones, or would it work on a rooted regular phone?
Name of article if this were about WM: Newest WM still buggy; does Microsoft learn?
Name of article if this were about iPhone: New iPhone keyboard deemed brilliant, almost ready.
Name of article if this were about Palm: Pre's keyboard will type for you, cook meals, iron clothes
There would be no article if this were Symbian/Nokia and RIM would get something boring like "Business users will continue using physical keyboard"
I just want to say, "No Crap, Engadget." If the cupcake were done, we'd have it on our phones. Software isn't just magically done one day. Writing code involves .. get this.. writing the code. They'll be done when they are done, and not a minute sooner.
dude, you guys need to chill on the assumption of bias. Yes, engadget favors certain phones, but you guys are taking bias to a whole other level.
undercooked means...get this....you can get it still but its still not ready yet. "No crap" they aren't done, hence the name of the title. Do you "get this" Seth??
No, you can go on being pissed about engadget even giving a shit to post an update on android, while at the same time you and kevin are going around looking for apple bias in every other post. Nice.
You can have cupcake on the G1 (rooted) and Dev phone for some time now... (since 12-22-2008)

"There's video of the MacGyver'd OS in action after the break" - fixed your post
this has been on xda-developers for over a month....
The G1 Browser called steel has this keyboard and it rotates with the phone position
This is what I was just thinking, Steel manages the soft keyboard no problem. It's not ideal but it works, in both landscape and portrait.
Window animations, however, look pretty hot and I can't wait for those just as a little aesthetic indulgence. I just hope they don't take 6 months making the soft backspace key work.
