Mac mini refresh allegedly caught on camera

Well, what do we have here? According to MacRumors, this could quite possibly be the next-gen Mac mini we've been waiting so patiently for. This guy would seem to correspond roughly to other possible "leaks" we've been hipped to in the past, including the presence of five USB ports, FireWire 800, Mini DisplayPort, and Mini DVI. Coincidence? Underhanded Photoshoppery? You be the judge.
Update: Looks like the pic hit both MacRumors and AppleInsider at the same time, but the MR forum poster who put it up included some alleged specs: a 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB Level 2 cache, 2GB DDR 3 memory at 1066MHz and a ATA Super Drive. Believe what you will!
[Thanks, iB3nji]

I do not believe this is a fake. If it were a photoshop job, you would more likely see identical reflections on each of the USB ports, which isn't the case.
Still, it seems like a lot of USB compared to the iMac or MacBook, and I thought Apple didn't care for FireWire anymore, so is this really Apple? Also the specs seem kinda high for a $600 computer, but I guess it's just better because tech has improved.
Anyway, if anyone could pack all that in there, Apple could.
You all always say 'fake' and it's always real. I need a new Mac, and this update is what I've been waiting for. Sweet.
The mini-DVI port looks incorrect.
Totally fake. I saw the real one already it's nothing like that. http://mediumjones.com/pics/newminileak.jpg
9 USB ports? It seems like the the Mac Mini is compensating for something.
Interesting fake. Look at the obvious perspective and shadows on the left of the computer. The power cord and network ports are left of the camera's center. The next 2 ports are straight on. The left monitor port is straight on and the right, smaller monitor port is far to the right of the camera's perspective, then the USB ports are all straight on again. Doesn't seem possible in my universe.
Mr.Blurry cam..... nnnnooooooooooo
You got to think that if you're going to snap a picture of a new Mac Mini, you're going to get one of the top/front rather than the ports.
You'd *hope* after all this time, Apple wouldn't just add a port and call it a new Mac Mini. A port which only works with their monitors?
Seems like a big fuck you to the people who have been holding out. So I'll say fake.
how is this not real there are 5 usb ports vs the 4 on the original
So fake that it hurts! There will not be a new mini, even if, it would be so stripped due to branding issues.
5 USB ports, a mini-dvi and mini-displayport... yeah right!
Aside from systems with only a single USB port, Apple never puts an odd number of USB ports on their products. It doesn't seem very Cupertino-like to include five, especially when reducing the number of on-board ports increases the sales of USB hubs (an accessory that's so heavy in margin that Steve Jobs uses it for an anchor on his private yacht.)
Incorrect. The iMac ships with 3 USB ports on the back.
Mister squared is right. And thats been true for around 8 years.
The power adapter reeks of a PS job to me, it just looks fake for some reason
stupid apple, get rid of a usb port and put a hdmi 1.3b port on it instead! displayport will never catch on no matter how hard they try, they will alienate people by not having hdmi. Anyone have a 42" lcd tv with display port, me neither, but mine has 3 x hdmi! :P
you do realize that displayport is part of the 1.2 standard that is about to be released... plus check this out:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2
that's all you would need, and it's only about 16 bucks after shipping. That's less than most HDMI cables.
I meant mini displayport when I wrote that. Shoot sorry for messing up.
LOL you link to monoprice and at the same time claim that the adapter is less than most hdmi cables.
Considering monoprice sells HDMI cables starting at the low price of $2.64, you're very mistaken. Plus, you'd need a cable anyways with that adapter.
FAIL
That looks too useful for it to be from Apple.
If this is true, I'm liking it. Firewire 800, 5(!) USB ports, looks great. However, this could be a fake as Apple seems to shift away form Firewire (boo!). Still hope this is the real deal, and out with Snow Leopard.
needs a core 2 quad option
Seriously, if I had a pre-production prototype or something to play with and all I'd spend a little longer and take more photos from many different perspectives and in hopefully higher quality and less of Mr. Blurrycam. Is it really that hard?
Once again, Apple knows best. Apparently HDMI is only for the "common man" , not the enlightened. It's comforting to know that those who have a greater vision than I are there to show me the way. I exist solely to sup at the nip of the almighty Apple teat.
Oh please.
This is bogus, Apple are phasing out Firewire.
I wish Apple would move to 3.5" HDD in the Mac Mini. Form over function I suppose.... Too bad they are unwilling to make it a little bigger.
And BTW, I think this is fake. IMO the new Mac Mini will be silver and black.
prob fake, but come on maple, i am ready to buy my first mac, just waiting for the mini....
Why is there a headphone jack on the back?
Where would you put the audio out jack?
well people you dont need to argue about it being fake because it has to many ports ....or where or not fire wire will get placed on it or not...just take a "close" look at the picture. Its fake...
The left side of the white part is not straight, if you look closely you will see that the edge of the white part is not symetrically straight to the edge of the actual device (the silver part). Secondly if you look down on the left side right below the power cable. The corner is very tacky as if someone literally just dragged the white part over the metallic part and didn't clean up the bottom left tip as they did with the bottom right tip of the white part. DEF photoshop job there.
if its small and powerful enough to run 1080p mkv's and do other general shit, im buying on for a media center
ATA? WTF? Apple's laptops use SATA these days. The firewire port doesn't make a lot of sense since they have eliminated it on the MacBook. It's also peculiar to have two video outputs on a low-end consumer product. Stranger is that there is one video symbol for two ports. Odd. The USB ports on the current Mini are not individually labeled, but they all look alike. The two video ports on this mystery product are not the same, so they should have individual labels. 2 GHz seems slow. The current model tops out at 2 GHz. Why wouldn't they bump it. The current model has 2 or 4 MB L2 Cache. 3 seems wrong. Although I guess the low end MBP has 3.
To the person who said they think there should be a mag save connector, I agree if you mean an output that would allow you to connect their mag safe powered monitor. But I wouldn't want magsafe to power the computer itself. Laptops have batteries. If you accidentally knock out the magsafe, the battery takes over. A Mini won't have a battery so you'd end up shutting off the computer As it is, the power connector on the Mini is not strong enough. It's already too easy to dislodge accidentally, like when you have to move the computer slightly to insert a USB port.
What I'd like to see is a front mount USB or two. And I'd like to see the ports on the back spaced out. At least one so I could plug in a thumb drive. It's a challenge on the current mini because the ports are so close.
People honestly still care about these things? Good lord.
